Need Driver Help after re-installing XP Pro!!

I was having some problems with my (somewhat old) Dell Dimension D600 laptop
so I decided to do a clean install.

Everything went well except now my Device Manager shows no drivers (question
marks) for:
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
PCI Modem
Video Controller

I have no chipset install disk for this computer so using my other computer,
I went to the Dell web site and downloaded what I thought were a series of
drivers. The file is named DellDriverDownloadManager.application. I then
copied this file to my Dell laptop but it will not open except as a text
file in notepad.

My question - how can I install these drivers? If I double click this same
file on my other PC, it will ask me if I want to do an install (which I
don't want to do on that PC).

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Don't make things overly difficult. ;-)

I believe you are over-thinking (or underthinking) what it is you need to
do.

In order to run the updates - you need to get them to the machine that needs
them. Sure - you might buy a new part for a car from an auto supply store
and transport it in another vbehicle - but you don't try to install it in
the vehicle it wasn't meant for.

Download the files, copy them to some external media (like USB thumb drive,
CD, DVD, external USB hard disk drive, etc) that you can connect to and use
on the frshly installed machine. Make note of the name of each file and
which of the things it is associated with so you can install them in an
order.

Yes- I am suggesting you install andf reboot after each one - just to be
safe. Necessary - not at all. To be honest - I usually install all of the
above and only reboot once - and that has been done by me on the exact model
laptop you are using.

You'll still need a few - most likely the Wireless Network Device (will
depend which you have physically...)

Maybe one of these:

Dell Wireless 1450 WLAN miniPCI Card
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R140745&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=6482&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=22&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=187888

Intel (R) Pro/Wireless 2100 LAN miniPCI Adapter

Intel (R) PRO/Wireless Network Connection
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R155386&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=5896&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=11&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=207280

The latter would be the most likely for my customers...

Thank you Shenan Stanley for your very detailed reply.

Perhaps I did not explain correctly or else I don't understand - I did
download some of these files using another computer and then copied then
over to the Dell 600 using a thumb drive. I cannot download anything via the
Dell because I have no Internet access until I can install the appropriate
network drivers.

The problem is that this download file called
"DellDriverDownloadManager.application" will not install on the Dell, it
just opens as a text file in notepad!! I also do not quite understand why
this file is named "DellDriverDownloadManager.application" regardless of
which driver I choose to download - are all the drivers contained in this
file, why is it always the same size?

Thanks

Try the download again. <file>.application is not a valid filetype for an
executable file. You didn't download the right thing.

What is the URL (assuming they permit direct access) for the web page where
you got the download?

This is the URL below. I've downloaded the drivers several times and the
file name is always "DellDriverDownloadManager.application", size 10KB.

If I double click on the file name "DellDriverDownloadManager.application"
it will ask me to "install". I do not continue because I'm afraid it will
install the drivers on my working PC. That's not what I want, I need to
install the drivers on the Dell 600.

and Shenan gave you the download sites for each
individual driver that you need to download to whatever machine
you are now using and then copy to a thumb drive from where
you will be able to install them on the machine that's missing the drivers..

got it??

You downloaded the incorrect thing.

Visit the exact links I gave you.

For example - the "Intel Mobile Chipset (Motherboard Chipset)" link should
take you to a web page with a button labeled "Download" and when clicked
on - you should "Save" the file it wants to in a location you can find
easily. The filename will be"R114079.EXE". In fact - this link:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R114079.EXE

Would download it directly.

This is actually more help than one should have to give someone who decided
they could rebuild their operating system (something that should have been
prepared for, IMO) - but...

In order - the direct downloads for the executables you will need to
transfer to the Dell Latitude D600 laptop and install in order are:

http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R114079.EXE
http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R114084.EXE
http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R133052.EXE
http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R90698.EXE
http://ftp.us.dell.com/comm/R104084.EXE
http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R113575.EXE
http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/R113813.EXE

Most likely this one:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R155386.EXE

I'm unsure how much more help I could be indirectly - so hopefully those get
you the files you need, you get the copied to the Dell Latitude D600 laptop
and installed and come back here - replying to this part of the
conversation - to let everyone know whether or not you got what you needed
installed.

Also - save the files for future needs.

I click on the down-arrow to expand the Communication section and clicked on
the Download button for the first choice. A popup (actually a CSS frame)
appears asking if I want to use their download manager (no thanks) or get
the file via HTTP with my web browser. I click on the Download link for an
HTTP file download. What I'm offered is an .exe file, not an .application
file. After download, I have an .exe file that is 2.04MB big.

I click on the down-arrow to expose the Chipset driver downloads. I pick
the Intel mobile driver set by clicking on the Download link next to it. I
elect the web browser file download. I'm offered an .exe file. After
download, the file is 1.36MB in size.

Both downloads were of .exe files and neither was a mere 10KB in size.
Other than the web page, I don't know on what you clicked there (i.e., what
navigation you followed once you reached that web page).

(Note: Whatever is the established top- or bottom-posting order, please
maintain that order in your replies. Do not create a jumbled mess by mixing
top- with bottom-posting styles).

When you clicked on the download button for the first driver you
downloaded, you should have chosen the second download button at the
bottom of the pop-up window. Also there was a little checkmarked line
that said "Remember my choices" which set a cookie in your braowser to
remember that setting. So now you'll have to go into your cookie folder
and delete the all the cookies from Dell to be able to change the way
the files are downloaded. Since I don't know what browser you're using
it would be hard to tell you what exactly to do to delete those cookies.

MANY thanks to all who replied, you were a great help. I am finally
downloading the proper exe files instead of using the Download manager!!

I now have an Internet connection. The only problems that remain are:

I installed the wireless LAN driver for the Intel Pro 2200 and 2100 (they
are supposed to be on this laptop) but can't see a wireless icon.
Two yellow question marks in Device Manager - Network Controller,
O2MicroSmartCardBus_Reader.

My product # for the Dell D600 is FJ4TT31. That's were I'm looking for my
drivers.

Specifically the "All Latitude D600 (88 files)" tab...

 - Nothing right now under "Applications (4)" should be needed.
 - The only file under "Audio (1) should be needed.
 - You probably should (but not right now) get the file under "BIOS (1)"
someday. It is not NECESSARY right now.
 - Nothing under "CD/DVD (28)" is needed.
 - Both files under "Chipset (2)" are needed. (Sounds like you did not
install the "O2Micro - Driver" from your response.)
 - Assuming you do not have Cell Phone wireless, only the "Conextant -
Driver" that applies to "D480 MDC V.92 Modem" is needed.
 - Nothing is needed from under the "Diagnostics (3)" section.
 - Nothing is needed from under the "IDE & EIDE Controllers (6)" section.
 - The only file under "Input Device Drivers (1)" is needed.
 - "Network (22)" is the section that gets tricky. It is really determined
by your configuration. You have to know what you purchased (via the
receipt, etc) to know exactly what all you need. You obviously need the
"Broadcom - Driver" that applies to "570x Gigabit Integrated Controller".
After that - which you need for wireless depends on what you bought. If you
have an Intel WiFi card - I would get the driver and software from Intel -
personally.
 - You shouldn't need the one file under "Patches and Fixes (1)".
 - You should need nothing from under "System Firmware (1)".
 - You should need nothing from under "System Utilities (4)".
 - You should need nothing from under "Systems Management (6)".
 - You should get only the "ATI - Driver" which applies to "Mobility Radeon
9000" from under "Video (2)".

Looking at your warranty status (ended on 11/24/2006) under the "Original
System Configuration" I was able to deduce you do have the "Dell (9Y200)
802.11b Wireless Adapter" - which is just an Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 LAN
miniPCI Adapter. Assuming you downloaded that from the "Network (22)"
section above and installed it - it should be functional - however - as I
said - I owuld probably get the Intel driver *from Intel* for it - software
and all. That would be this:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=944&DwnldID=11292&lang=eng

Wouldn't expect much out of it. ;-)

I would normally tell you to get the latest video card driver from the video
card manufacturer as well - but with the AMD/ATI purchase/merger thing and
the laptop being 5+ years of age (3+ years out of warranty) - it looks like
that support is long gone too.

This thing came with Windows 2000?
