Configuring Master Browser in peer to peer network

I have a five computer peer to peer network. I am constantly getting Master
Browser errors in the logs of all of the computers (MRxSmb Event ID: 8003,
BROWSER Event ID: 8021)

I realize these errors are not critical, but it bugs me that things are not
configured 100%. Also, the errors grab my attention in the log and distract
me form possibly seeing more serious errors.

I understand the concept of MB and how the election works in regard to OS
etc (all computers are XP SP3)

I have tried setting:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services \Browser\Parameters

'IsDomainMaster' to TRUE on one machine and FALSE on others
'MaintainServerList' to TRUE on one machine AUTO on others

What is the proper way to configure the MB in this network (there is no real
'server' or machine that is on all the time to maintain this list)?

Thanks guys

Hi. Thank you for your post.

This article talks about the registry settings I think I tried.
Maybe I am not configuring them correctly?
There is also a section talking about LSA. My computers are set to 0. Should
I play with these?

Jill,

Yes you are right. The errors are not that critical and I wouldn't worry
about them. These errors are also evident when somebody connects to a
domain using their own laptop and expects to receive IP address dynamically.

I wouldn't worry about these errors.

What I am wondering is if there is a better way to configure this though

I don't think so because an alien system won't be recognized by the
domain (I appreciate you are using P2P) so by default it will take
control of that system by dynamically assigning an IP address. That is
my understanding but I may be wrong.

I agree it's not much to worry about unless you do browsing and nothing
shows up.
(And you need browsing)

I know I wouldn't lose any sleep over this... ;)

I've seen an issue like this on a PC that the only thing that fixed it
is flattening and starting over.
And that's kind of drastic for this IMO

It has nothing to do with IP addressing, it concerns only the NetBios
browse list.

Are all the machines on the same subnet?

Yes, same subnet. All static IPs.

oh ok
Most people use Logmein free for this..

Since this sounds like a Business. (Remoting in.)
Have you thought about Microsoft Home Server?
It even has a web based Remote Login...
(No Ports to remember and they can access from any Browser.)
If you'd like Image based backups on PC's?
For under 1K it's cheap insurance if you are a business.

Backups are the least thing remembered and with WHS
The backups are automatic...

"Most"?

Maybe in your circle - but I know more that use TeamViewer in my circle.

I know almost as many that use Remote Desktop and Dynamic DNS.

I know some that have setup vWorkspace, but that is geting into the
'business' side of the table..

True There are many alternatives
and you are right I should have said something like Logmein.
I personally don't like to put PC's in ANY Environment in a Static IP
configuration

Tools like LogmeIn (Free) allows someone to use a simple web interface
and doesn't require port redirects
Changing the listening ports on PC's
Remembering IP's etc.

I prefer the KISS method of a Business enviroment.

I always try to give clients the options that require the LEAST
amount of administration, since I charge by the hour...

Just creating complex solutions just means more wasted time
and as we know, time=money...

yes it's cool but a good ROI?
With Logmein (Free) or other options if your router dies
You slap a new one in and you are up in 2mins.
With redirecting Ports you have a bit more time involved.

This is also why I suggest Microsoft Home Server
a Simple Solution, for Remote access to desktops
and a VERY Simple solution for Image Backups for PC's

If a Hard drive dies on a Workstation in less than 1hr you can be backup and
running.
Simple!
:)

You say that you are "constantly getting Master Browser errors...".
What does this mean? Is it happening once every day when machines are
booted or is it happening many, many times during the workday, like
every 12 minutes or so?

Can you copy and paste the complete contents of the two errors and post
it with your nest reply? To copy the event click on the clipboard icon
below the Up/Down arrows at the upper right.

This error is occurs when there is a computer on your network with a
misconfigured firewall that does not allow NetBT broadcasts to be
received. The computer with the firewall does not see broadcasts from
other computers so it thinks it's the only computer on the subnet and
self-appoints itself as "Master Browser". As Master Browser, it
broadcasts a message every so often declaring itself as such but since
it blocks all replies, it ignores the presence of the rest of the
network. A legitimite Master Browser will shut itself down after
receiving a couple of these announcements and generate the message
above.

In your case, "COMPUTER1" has the firewall that is ignoring COMPUTER2
and causing COMPUTER2 to shut down as Master Browser.

This is [loosely] covered in the following Microsoft KB article:
"Internet firewalls can prevent browsing and file sharing"
  <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298804>

If you can't find/fix the firewall on COMPUTER1, then try setting
COMPUTER1's "MaintainServerList" registry value to "false" using
Regedit as described in the following article then reboot:

"Common causes and solutions of browser Event ID 8021 and Event ID 8032
on domain master browsers"
  <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/135404>

I think you are correct. I have turned off the Windows Firewall on all
computers and so far no browser errors.
You would think that excluding File & Print sharing from the firewall would
open all ports needed.

Somehow your computers do not communicate at times for this to
happen.

Do you have a Cisco VPN client installed? It has a firewall that's
active even when the client isn't. If so, uncheck it in the Options
menu.

Are your network cards powering down during idle times? Bring up
Device Manager (start->Run->devmgmt.msc), double-click on your
network card, Power Management Tab, Uncheck "Allow computer to turn
off this device..."

So I continue to have problems.

I downloaded this little vbs script that should find the MB. It reports that
it can't find the MB on my network. I have tried it on all of the computers
without the firewall active. I also tried it on another peer to peer network
and it did correctly find the MB.

When I run the script on my network it creates a text file NetViewList which
does have all of the computers listed

Server Name Remark

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\\COMPUTER1 Computer1
\\COMPUTER2 Computer2
\\COMPUTER3 Computer3
\\COMPUTER4 Computer4
\\COMPUTER5 Computer5
The command completed successfully.

The NBTlist file on my network differs from the other network is does have
the names of the computers and the workgroup name, but does not have "
...__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered"

also the MAC address of the working network has the MAC address of the
adapter, on my network it is all 0
MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00

The VBS script is below. I commented out the 2 lines that will delete the
files mentioned above. You may want to delete them from your root directory
after the fact.
