Problems after kb890830 and kb978542 updates

After windows Vista installed kb890830 and kb978542 I noticed 4 problems so
far.
1. MSN Service not available, error code: 800706b5. (This happened with
previous updates and I fixed the issue by doing a system restore to a
previous date.)
2.When I started internet explorer (ver 8.0.6001.18904) I got a message my
default search engine was corrupted by another program.
3.I tried the usual system restore and found there were no restore points
available
4. I had some unknown problem trying to log into this site. It kept giving a
site not available message.
I am running windows vista home premium with sp2.
I am using AVG free for my antivirus protection.(never had any other
installed)

Any help or advise would be much appreciated. Problems 1 and 2 above I have
encountered on almost every windows update. Problems 3 and 4 are new for this
update.

Is Vista SP1 or SP2 installed?

Did a Norton or McAfee free trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

Vista sp2 is installed.
There were no trials preinstalled.

Uninstall AVG & reboot, then do a fresh install of AVG: This time select the
CUSTOM install option and do NOT install (i.e., uncheck) Linkscanner,
Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar, or any of the email
scanning components then see if the behavior persists.

The windows live problem went away on it's own after 10-12 hours and I can
connect normally now. The search engine problem will probably resurface on
the next windows update. That's no biggie.
I did the uninstall and reinstall of AVG as suggested. The only difference I
noticed after the the reinstall was logging into this site. I no longer went
to a cannot connect page.
I still am not able to do a system restore. When I start system restore it
says there are no available points to restore to. I did the next step listed.
I clicked on repair windows; an option listed under system restore. Magically
my system restore points showed up under this option so I picked the day
before the update(5/12/2010). It went through the system restore but on
reboot it said system restore was unsuccessful. I'm still stumped and unable
to do a restore, but other than that my system seems normal. Now my taskbar
icon is showing new updates are available and I'm almost afraid to let it
update, but at the same time I'm hoping it may be a fix to yesterdays
updates. I'll post later what happens.

Never, EVER use System Restore to "undo" an update, Service Pack, or IE
upgrade! Instead, uninstall the update, Service Pack, or IE upgrade &
reboot. If that doesn't correct the problem, then try System Restore.

I'd doubt KB890830 would have anything to do with your System Restore
problem (unless the Malicious Software Removal Tool notified you of
something it found when it scanned) nor should KB978542.

Unless a Norton application had been installed on the computer at some point
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it), your
System Restore problem suggests that you're seeing the effects of a
hijackware infection.

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed AVG? Had
your subscription expired before you installed AVG?

Oooops, too late on the never use system restore to undo an update.
The updates showing on the taskbar in my last post were the same 2 installed
on 5/13/2010. They installed automatically this morning without any apparent
problems except that I still have no system restore points.
This is a custom built computer that never had any free trials of any a/v
software installed. I installed the operating system on a freshly fdisked and
formatted drive. AVG free was installed the same day and has been running and
updated since. There were a couple of brief periods that AVG was not active.
Once during the uninstall and reinstall yesterday and once during a similar
uninstall and reinstall after a similar windows update problem last year.
Thanks for your advice. I will follow the links in your post to the
micro-trend online scan. I never knew which sites could be trusted to do a
safe online scan. I'm slightly paranoid of free online scans in light of all
the fake stuff on the internet.

Should each server be in a seperate routing group and use a routing group connector? They are currently i n the same routing group. Thanks, Forest In case anyone has this problem my STMP connector was setup to use a smart relay. I had to check the box that said attempt local delivery before using...

"Matchcode update" jobs again
Hi again. I've currently got 76.000+ system jobs of type "Matchcode update" in my CRM database, increasing all the time. All in all there are probably 200 accounts and maybe 400 contact records in this system. My database backup is over 200 megs already, and I', pretty sure most of it is "Matchcode update"s. Can I just a) turn that thing off (recurring job); what would it actually mean (i.e. what does it really do)? Or b) make it *not* store a new row in system jobs everytime it is executed? This just seems way stupid to me... TIA, Antti Kurenniemi The...

free/busy problem, again
Sorry to bump this, but I really need to figure this out. Here's the origiinal question, (thanks, EdC for the original response) for clarification, "co-exist" with exchange 5.5 is what the exchange 2003 setup "wizard" that I was running from the CD called it. It walked you through the process in 30 easy steps! Anyway, there is just the one organization with the two servers: I have an exchange 5.5 server, which for various reasons, the schedule+ free/busy folders are gone/corrupted/not working. I set up a new exchange 2003 server in co-exist mode, and moved some...

Problem with installation of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
L.S. I have problem with re-installing Microfost Office Enterprise 2007. With the help of Google I discovered that a part of the problem were the remnants of the former installation that didn't show up in the "Software" window, and I removed them using Windows Install Cleanup. Now the installation process is proceeding further that before, but still cancels at a certain point, restarting the computer doesn't seem to help. In the "SetupExe"document in my \Temp map the following frase seems to point at the error in the installation: Log level chan...

Mail merge problem #3
Running Publisher 2003, Word 2003 I have a Word document -- with an Avery label format -- containing my mailing list. When trying to mail merge with the wizard, it errors out saying; "Some of the field names in this data source are blank or contain invalid characters, such as periods, brackets, or exclamation points. Change these field names before you import data from this data source." I've cleared out all the punctuation, etc. marks that are there and cleared out any blank "Labels". I'm still getting this error. What's up? Will I be able to make...

Invoice Designer portrait/landscape problems
I'm using Money 2004 Small Business edition with winXP. I go into Invoice Designer and open the template 'Service Portrait 1 (Logo)'. This opens, and gives me nearly enough to the invoice layout I would want subject to a few minor alterations. If I then save this template as a new template (with or without any alterations), open the invoice feature within Money and select this new template as the one I want to use, the print preview gives me a landscape orientation of this invoice. It also prints as landscape. (Choosing the original 'Service Portrait 1 (Logo)' templat...

OL 2003 and MAPPOINT problem
Using OL 2003 with Mappoint 2004. The Cut & Paste function using Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V is malfunctioning. When doing a cut & paste using the Ctrl functions, the MAPPOINT symbol is always PASTED into the new area (Mappoint has not been involked in the session to create a map to paste). IF I use the EDIT | COPY menu items and then the EDIT|Paste into the new area, the selected text is properly pasted. Displaying the Office Clipboard confirms what is happening, but WHY? Previously, I used OL 2002 with a prev version of Mappoint and this operation worked fine. Ideas?? or is this a ...

MS Access query filter problem
I have created a fairly basic database in Access with approx 20 columns/fields in the primary table. I am trying to build several queries which filter the data differenty. When in "Design View" for the query every column/field can be sorted with standard criteria except for two. These two fields have one thing in common: unlike every other field which is populated "manually" via a form, these two are populated via pull-down menus (the values of which are sourced from separate tables). No matter what criteria I use, the query refuses to return any records...

Outlook2003: Search folders updates how and when?
Hi I've just upgraded from Outlook XP to 2003 and want to use some of the new features, in particular the search folders. I use 2 local data files (personal and work), and want to use "For follow up" for both these. They're easily created, but somehow the search folders doesn't always update properly. Sometimes when I set a red followup flag for a mail, the search folders is updated instantly - but often this is not the case. If I restart Outlook the search folder seem to update in a minute or so. Anyone know how I manually update the search folders? Thanks for any ad...
