Migrate SBS 2003 SP/2 to Windows 2003 or 2008 Domain

Good Day,

This question keeps popping up but I can't seem to resolve all my questions.

I have an SBS 2003 domain. I need to migrate to Windows 2003 or 2008 Domain
with Exchange 2007 (or 2010). I can not down the old SBS server as it is
running legacy software that can not be migrated. However, it DOES NOT have
to be part of the new domain.

I have already added a 2008 DC to the domain.

1) Is the Transition Pack for SBS 2003 Stnd SP1 still available?

If not:

2) Will ADMT (3, 3.1 or 3.2) work to migrate my Users, Computers, Groups
and Mailboxes?

3) Group Policy appears to be just Export / Import (with the proper
mappings).

If ADMT will not work:

4) Can I...
   a) Add and exchange 2007/ 10 to the domain
   b) Migrate my mailboxes
   c) Seize the FSMO roles from SBS
   d) Keep running the legacy app on the old SBS

Thanks for your assistance

The most important part of all this is
1. Once you transfer the FSMO roles...SBS will begin shutting down =
every couple hours...

You may be able to find the transition pack...but it is no longer =
distributed by MS
Have you checked Ebay, Buy.com, CDW, etc?

Thank you for the reply.

So seizing the roles is not a viable option since I have to keep the
original working.

I did find the transition pack about 2 months ago. By the time it cleared
purchasing I can't find the SP1 version anywhere. R2 is available but most
writeups agree that it won't work on SP2 servers.

Any knowledge of the ADMT's compatibility with SBS 2003?

Thanks.

You can use ADMT, but you cannot have trusts enabled with an SBS domain =
so how are the two domains going to communicate?

No, seizing the roles is not a viable option, nor is ADMT. Your cleanest
solution is to migrate the domain to the new 2008 domain, then remove SBS
2k3 from the network. Now, build a machine to run the legacy software on,
using regular Server 2k3. You could recycle the original SBS machine, with a
clean install of a new Server 2k3 license. Or on a new machine. In either
case, add the legacy application back on, and restore your data files for
it.

Chris,

I guess that was really my question. So, with not Trusts, no ADMT...
Another great idea shot to hell.

Thank you Charile,

Unfortunately a reinstall of the application is not possible. It was
installed by the company that wrote it and we no longer have a contract with
them (cost prohibitive to get a new one).

I'm guessing my only option will be a manual migration: create new domain,
configure AD, export mail, import mail, migrate member machines. Wah!

Why, oh, why did MS discontinue the Transition Pack. They probably coulda'
made money on that for another 5 years as we, the poor folk, were finally
forced to abandon old hardware.

Certainly we are all concerned with cost these days, but you are =
probably looking at around 7-10k for the hardware and software and CALs =
plus the transistion pack for your proposed upgrade...you can't arrange =
for a single support call with the vendor of the software to have it =
reinstalled somewhere else. That seems odd.

Well, you can't continue to use your existing SBS server once you've moved
off of it, nor can you set up any sort of trust relationship. You really
need to think about what other options you might have. (It's personally
perplexing to me that you can't think of a method to move the application. I
can think of several, and which one I'd ultimately use would vary depending
on the specifics of the app. But move it, I would.)

Charlie / Chris,

The application move is the bugaboo. To get the manufacturer to move it
would mean a 10k service contract AND a separate support charge for the
reinstall. since they did the install originally (which required quite a bit
of tweaking) I don't have the knowledge to move the blooding thing. It is an
erp application running in the Progress 9.1e environment.

But, I might just try to get it onto another box. Even if I don't have full
access as long as we can do legacy queries we sould be OK.

So assuming I were to overcome this particular issue, how do I migrate
exchange off of the old SBS? Can I install a second exchange in the
organization with SBS?

Thanks.

Charlie,

When you say "migrate the domain to a new 2008 domain" are you saying to
just add a 2k8 DC, move the GC and then seize the FSMO roles?

In doing this does it remove the "user count" and other SBS limitations?

Do you add a new Exchange and then remove the original SBS Exchange as you
would any "First Exchange SErver"?

Thanks.
