Issue with Outlook Mobile Access - calender doesn't sync

Dear all,

Since a few days I've got a weird issue with Outlook Mobile Access (OMA).
Everything worked fine, untill a few days ago. I had a notification on my
phone (Palm Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6), wich stated that there had been
a change on the server (SBS 2003 SP 2). I did not implement any changes this
week, apart from the usual updates. The notification said I had to re
initialize my mail, contacts, agenda, etc., and because there was no other
option, I did.

Since then everything syncs normal, apart form my calender. Items on the
server (wich can be seen / added / changed in the Outlook client on my PC
and/or in Outlook Web Access) do not sync to the phone. Items created on the
phone do sync back to the server and show up in Outlook on my PC and Outlook
Web Access.

My wive uses an iPhone, and it has the same issue.

I'm totally confused and have no idea where to start fixing it.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards,
Marco Visser

First let's try running an Exchange test at the following site. Post any

Also, if you have any Event Log errors in anyof the logs, please post the

Hello Ace,

Thanks for your help!

What I've done:
- I've checked connectivity by going to www.<<domainname>>.nl/oma -> works
out fine, the calender and the items in it are showing there;

- I've run the SBS BPA -> no errors (red signs), some warnings (yellow
signs), but they seem not relevant to me.
They are: NIC driver more than one year old (no newer available); Change the
functional level of Exchange Server 2003 (as far as I understand this is only
relevant when upgrading to SBS2008); Outlook 2003 missing in ClientApps
folder (removed for diskspace reasons, there are only mobile devices
connected to my SBS, no workstations); POP3 connector snap-in not updated
(I'm not using POP3 connector), this server is in a journal wrap condition (I
do not know wheter this is relevant, I've not implemented the recomanded
solution, because I'm i little reluctant to do so, because it involves
registry changes and can only be undone by reformatting disks); Windows
SBS2003 and Sharepoint Services running (I'll need to implement a Sharepoint
servicepack); your emaildomein is on the Turf list (this one I do not
understand: I've added some Display Names (between " ") in the Sender Filter
list, no emailadresses are in the list, so I don't understand why it's saying
my domein is in the list.

All together I di'dn't think those warnings are relevant to my specific issue.

- I've run some tests on the testexchangeconnectivity website. It wasn't
quite clear to me what are the relevant tests, so I tried the ones that
looked most relevant to me:
Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Connectivity Tests -> first a warning on the
SSL-certifacte (I'm using the self genererated certificate), after checking
'ignore SSL-trust': test succesfull.

Microsoft Exchange Web Services Connectivity Tests -> the test shows an
error not on my SBS, but on the testingwebsite itself.

Microsoft Office Outlook Connectivity Tests -> can't test this one, because
there is not an option to ignore SSL-trust, but I'm using RPC over HTTP for
the Outlook client on my PC to connect to Exchange. This functions properly,
also today.

The funny thing is that all the test seem to be positive, but still the
calender doesn't sync. No problems syncing mail and contacts...

Kind Regards,
Marco Visser

PS: if you could solve this by connecting to my server by RDC, no problem, I
would be very glad when this issue is solved. Although I'm Dutch myself, the
server OS is english.

Hi Marco,

One thing that stands out, and may or may not relate to this, is the Journal
Wrap condition. That usually comes about if you are using an imaging based
backup tool, and at one time or another, had re-imaged (restored) the SBS
with an image. Is this accurate? If so, Journal Wraps are difficult to fix
(sometimes impossible), especially if caused by restoring from an image.
Microsoft specifically recommends to not use imaging software due to this
reason. Read the following for more info on this condition. I thought to
point this out before moving on to discuss the Calendar issues.

As for the "your email domain is on the Turf list," I don't understand that,
unless it is a Dutch translation meaning your email domain is on an RBL
list. If it is, you would have to find out why your domain name has been
blacklisted. It may have been caused by a mass-mailing virus. See the
following to run your external IP against it to find out if you are on any
RBL blacklists.

For the calendaring issue, if you are using the Palms, I remember there are
issues with the way they work and ActiveSync. Do you have an HTC Windows
Mobile or iPhone to test it with? Take a look at the following Google search
I did on the Palms and not synching to know what I mean.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-us%3AIE-SearchBox&q=palm+treo+not+syncing&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g1

Also, using a private SSL certificate will also cause synchronization
issues. There are only a handful of certificates that will work. You can
export the Root CA certificate from your SBS CA and install it on the Palm.
Otherwise, I highly recommend to purchase a public certificate to make this
work. I've found DigiCert to be the least expensive and reliable. I don't
recommend GoDaddy since they use an intermediate certificate, and I am not
sure if that works properly with ActiveSync.

As for remoting in, I usually don't offer to remote into other machines,
since sometimes it can be time consuming to troubleshoot a problem, and most
of us in the newsgrouups basically post to help folks pro bono on a general
to specific level to try and help. However, if there are multiple issues, it
can be very time consuming, besides working on others' machines can get into
liability issues. If you need someone to remote in, I would suggest to call
Microsoft CSS to assist, but charges may apply. And you MUST, MUST fix that
Journal Wrap condition, otherwise it will lead to other problems down the
line that will essentially render the SBS useless.

I had a problem with ActiveSync and the calendar recently on a newly
reloaded SBS 2003 system and this hotfix from MS was the final resolution of
the problem in my situation..

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919864/en-us

I know it looks like it does not apply but it may be the solution. It was
for me.

I know that you said you were using OMA but the iPhone that your wife has
uses ActiveSync.

Hello Marco,

Thanks for your post and others' input.

In addition to the above good suggestions, please check if you have URLSCAN tool installed on SBS server, as based on customers feedback, URLSCAN tool may cause
this kind of calendar issues.

Suggestions:

1) Uninstall URLSCAN;
2) Restart the Exchange Information Store sevice;
3) Re-create the ActiveSync partnership on the mobile device;

Hope thie helps.

Thanks in Advance -- Kenneth Clebak Kenneth Have you resolved this? I have the same problem, and it is VERY annoying. Saira "Kenneth Clebak&...

When we scan a document from the same device and send it to a mailbox that still lives on our last remaining Exchange 2003 server, the output from the scanner is attached as a PDF document normally. Any ideas? Thanks Michael Buckley Header from email recieved to Exchange 2007: (server names and I...
