Fix: Visio 2007 x64 Hangs During Database model Creation

I'm posting this here, so hopefully others will have an easier time finding
the solution than I did...

On Windows XP (x64) Visio 2007 hangs when I try to create a new database
model diagram. Performing a "repair" doesn't help at all.

For some reason, turning off the "Print Spooler" Service makes things work
just fine. I have no idea why this is, but it did the trick.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for sharing this information. Do you see the hang when creating
other new drawing types? Does File > Print work for all the installed
printers on the system?

It's possible that the DB drawing type is determining how big to make the
page, polling installed printers and hitting a bad driver as some x64 print
drivers are a work-in-progress. thanks.

I had the same issue with *only* database drawings in Visio 2003 running
Windows XP x64 Pro. Turning off the print spooler service also fixed the
problem.

I have the same problem on Win2k3server x64 and Visio 2007 and I had the same
with Visio 2003.

Everything works fine except creating/loading a DB diagram. I set my
default printer to XPS printer cos I would expect that one to work.

To create a DB diagram I created a blank one then added the DB shapes. This
works and prints fine.

For some reason if the Diag is a true "db diag" then it just hangs and has
to be killed.

The problem also exists with Vista x64. I didn't try the print spooler
workaround, but creating a blank diagram and then opening the database
shapes worked for me.

This workaround did not work for me under Vista x64. With the Print Spooler
service off, my Visio 2007 still hangs when I try to create a new database
model diagram. I can create a blank drawing and open the database shapes,
but then I do not have access to the Database menu.

Reduce gigantic icon size in 2007 beta?
Is there a way in Outlook 2007 beta to reduce the size of the icons in the Navigation pane and across the top of the page? They are GIGANTIC. Horrible looking. It makes Outlook appear to be a comic book instead of a business application. I will never use this version of Outlook (or Word for that matter) if I can't reduce the icon size to very small, neat and nice looking. I also cannot see how to reduce the font size for the listings in the Navigation pane. That is also way too large. I like the size of the icons on the top of the "inbox page". WTF is wrong with MS Money 2007 Updates?

Reconciliation Database
Hi, I just want to get some thoughts on the best way to handle the following. I'm going to be reconciling account holdings between one system and various sources where they are held. I've got a query which does the basic reconciliation which I've now based a form off. The idea is for the user to open this form, can see where any Differences are above zero (calculated in the query), enter any reconciliation amounts in one field, enter notes in another field and then a calculated field would just be the difference minus the reconciliation amount. Thus for example, If the differenc...

Excel 2007 crashes, causes reboot
Hello- Has anyone seen this behavior? Working in a simple spreadsheet in Excel 2007. OS is Vista Ultimate. (Dual core AMD/3 GB RAM) Three times today, and a few times previously Excel 2007 locks up and then causes a reboot of my PC. Upon the completion of the reboot, a message simply states that Windows has recovered from a serious error. Event logs seem inconclusive. Issue only occurs when using Excel 2007 and has been fairly easy to replicate. Unfortunately this is not the only bug that I have experienced in Office 2007. connecting to the RMS database
Hello all! I have a noobie question. We are quoting a job for a company that currenlty has two stores, each with its own RMS. They want us to create a couple of things. I was thinking I would write a standalone app to connect the two, that way removing any possible race conditions (duplicate info). Is the RMS database ODBC compliant? I think I have seen that it is, how easy is this to do? Number two: They have a web site that they want to have e-commerce functionality. That means tha...
