Wrong name now...

I bought a used Acer Netbook. It is terrific. It has XP on it, that I may
leave or may change to Vista. I don't want to lose the applications, so
I'll probably leave it as is. My problem is that the prior owner's name -
"John Smith" - is built into Windows somewhere. I have changed the name of
the user to Paul, but his name comes up frequently. How can I change it to
my name? TIA, Paul

So I can just change this, with no negative ramifications? I know I do it
from "Run", but I don't remember what program - PCCONFIG?

Paul,

You need to open the Registry editor from Run:

regedit

Steve,
There is no RegisteredOwner under CurrentVersion. Are you sure that Windows
NT is correct for Windows XP?

Yes. It is present as "Registered Owner" under Windows XP (I used it on a
Windows XP Professional install), and Windows 7. I presume it would also be
available under Windows Vista.

I just right click on the key, and select, "Modify". Regedit pops up a
window, an you type in the new value. Just be extra certain you are on the
correct key (RegisteredOrganization, or RegistedOwner).

Did you make sure the sale of the software was included with the sale of
the hardware? If the installation media for Windows wasn't included
then you didn't get a license for it. Instead you got only hardware
which included a polluted hard disk.

How are you going to reinstall Windows XP if it becomes corrupted
(accidentally via registry editing or through malware) or the hard disk
dies and you need to replace it?

> I don't want to lose the applications,

If the installation media had been included in the sale then you can't
"lose" the applications. You would just reinstall them using their
installation media.

> so
> I'll probably leave it as is.

Which leads me to believe that you never got the installation media and
what you bought was only hardware with no legitimate licenses for
Windows or the applications. So all that software is pirated.

Search the registry on the string.

Or flatten the host by doing a FRESH install of Windows and the
applications. You don't know what malware tagged along in that polluted
hard disk. You don't know what tweaks have corrupted the setup for the
software. You don't know what illegal content might be lingering on
that host. Do you know for sure the original owner did a fresh install
of Windows and the included applications before selling it to you?

Plus, isn't XP also known as NT 5.1, whereby Win 2000 was NT 5?

Acer usually loads an OEM copy of Windows on their products. If you have the
original MS CoA, you have a (non-functional) product key for the OEM
software version listed on the CoA. You should be able to restore from a
recovery partition, or, in a pinch, from the files in the i386 folder
(assuming the original OEM OS is in place). I did just that for a Toshiba
laptop with no install disks.

I got a Toshiba laptop with a dying HDD. Used a Linux live CD to recover
data, and the i386 folder. Built a bootable CD out of the i386 files.
Replaced the HDD, and used the generic key from MS to activate the OS while
preserving the OEM "pre-activation". Honest, it worked out just fine.

I don't know what applications were originally included with that Toshiba;
but, if they were anything like the applications included with the HP
computers I've set up, I am not missing squat, anyway. Everything HP
pre-loaded I had, similar from other sources, that I like better.

If that Acer has an MS CoA on the bottom, he automatically has a license for
whatever MS OS Acer originally included with the computer. If you can't pull
the setup files from the i386 folder, or don't have the original OS, or
disks, I believe any generic OEM disk, with the same OS as on the CoA label,
can be used for setup. I believe MS will accept the CoA Product Key during a
telephone activation of the OS; assuming it isn't in their database of
pirated keys. I believe all that MS did was de-activate online activation of
Windows, using the product key on the CoA attached to computer.

Yes. It is present as "Registered Owner" under Windows XP (I used it on a
Windows XP Professional install), and Windows 7. I presume it would also be
available under Windows Vista.

I did it. I moved the files and folders from the old user to my new one
while logged in as the new one. Then I removed the old user. But now my
desktop and quickstart and wallpaper and screen saver, etc. are not what
they were. Can I find them in some ""desktop" file and rename or copy them?

If you deleted the old account files, you lost that information.
It may be just as easy to reconfigure your account using the Display setup.

MS Query and Row Range Names
We utilize MS queries in a spreadsheet that has range names for rows. Unfortunately, when the query returns a different # of records than before the query, it messes up the reference of the range names (i.e. if row 123 is named "Partner1" before the refresh of the query, "Partner1" will not move with the associated row if new records are inserted and/or deleted - NOR does it stay at row 123). column named "group" causes problems with new SQLServer
Unwisely we called a column in one of our tables "group". We talk to the table primarily though ADODB code in VBA in Access. This works fine with our SQL2000 box, but we're moving to SQL2008 (with compatibility 80) and in testing we found that Access will now give errors during .Updates on this table. Any advice here? Apple now worth more than Microsoft
