OE6 fails after installing Office 2000

The help of the assembled multitudes is welcomed:

I tried to install MS Office 2000 Premium into an environment
containing MSIE6.0 and Outlook Express 6.0 (with full SP updates.) OS
is Windows ME, also with full updates.

Result was corruption of Outlook Express. I could view email headers
and previews, but could not launch email messages and/or print them.
Further, the addressbook disappeared. When I tried to access address
book, I was told that the system was improperly installed and I should
reinstall. Removing Office 2000 from the system restored
functionality to Outlook Express.

I suspect that Office 2000's Outlook program is corrupting Outlook
Express. There seems to be no option to install Office 2000 without
Outlook, or to delete only Outlook from my system.

From reading various postings, I suspect that I have a .dll conflict,
but have not the expertise to attempt a fix.

Any suggestions for creating an environment where Office 2000 and
Outlook Express can coexist? If Bill Gates and Steve Jobs can talk to
each other, why can't these two?

Hopefully,

When installing Office choose "Custom install" as oppose to the default.
You can then pick what you want installed. It's a good rule of thumb never
to choose a default install - you never know what's being installed or how
it's configured. To remove installed components use the "Add remove
programs" option in Control Panel - choose Office and it'll bring up a
screen giving you various options.

John,

I did try Custom Install. There are a lot of pulldowns attached to
each component, but I was unable to discern that any of them would
actually prevent an element from being installed. The Add/Remove
Option allowed me to remove only the entire Office 2000 suite, and not
individual elements.

My OS is Windows 98 SE but I can't see ME being any different. Control
Panel... Add/Remove programs... Double-click Microsoft Office. For me this
gives three options: Repair, Add/Remove components, and Uninstall. There
are also a range of options available for each component, depending on the
component. The main ones are: run from my computer (drive symbol), run from
CD (CD symbol), installed on first use (drive and 1 symbol) and not
installed (red cross symbol). Clicking on the symbol gives a menu of
available options. I can't think why you can only add/remove the whole of
Office, nor can understand why you don't get the options. Hmmmm.

"Configuring Microsoft Office Basic 2007" every time I start
I added memory to my PC and Office 2003 started to misbehave (and it could not find a CAB file that was on the CD) so I removed it and upgraded to Office 2007. Now every time I start my PC it spends time configuring itself. I might add iTunes is the same. It means starting the PC is an even more laborious process than usual. Oh, and I have some annoying update to XML something or other that does not install either, and does not go away. It is ironic that the extra memory was to improve perforamnce. Every step forwards involves two steps back. Apart from swapping to App...
