Have you removed the Exchange service from your mail profile and added a POP
account?

I can find nothing in the setup areas about the Exchange service. Is there someplace I should be looking? I feel pretty computer challenged here w/ this problem, seems like it shouldn't be this difficult.

You haven't stated your Outlook version so it's difficult to advice you
exactly where to look.

OK, then, what do you see when you click Control Panel>User
Accounts>Mail>Show Profiles, select your profile, click Properties, then
E-mail Accounts>Next? Do you see just your POP account?

Under Control Panel>User Accounts you should see "Mail" and "User Accounts"
unless you're using the Classic Control Panel View. If you are, Control
Panel>Mail is what you want.

What bothers me in all this is that in your original post you mentioned
Exchange and from a brief perusal of other postings with this error, it
seems to be associated with downloading the offline address book from
Exchange, yet you say you have no Exchange account.

OK, here's what I'd do if I were in your shoes.

1) Make sure there is no antivirus program scanning incoming or outgoing
mail. Uninstall and reinstall without that option.
2) Detect and Repair in Help
3) new profile in Control Panel>Mail>Show Profile>Add (make a copy of your
PST to be safe)
4) New PST with File>New>Outlook Data File, then make it the new delivery
location, stop/restart Outlook and move data from old PST to new.

Other than that, I've no more ideas. Sorry.

Outlook needs Outlook Express to work
I've installed my Outlook 2002 on my new Vista PC (I had Xp before). Now when I start Outlook it says "requires Outlook Express 4.01 or greater". Outlook 2003 and "Check Names"

When we create a new e-mail message and type in the first name of a person from the global address book and hit ctrl- k to check the name...we get a response that Outlook doesn't recognize the name and there are "no suggestions". The only way Check Name will successfully resolve the name is if we type it last name first (ie, Gates, Bill). This was not the case in Office XP or Outlook 2000. You could search by first name (or partial first name)...
