Word 2004 Filenames as autotext

I frequently place file names in footers using AutoText. Suddenly Word
is adding "FILENAME" before my file name. There are also a grayed-out
box before and after the text. So "file.doc" is now "FILENANE
file.doc."

How do I get Word to just add the file name without "FILENAME" and
these boxes?

I've been using Word since it was first introduced. Sometimes I think
that this program has just become far too cumbersome.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you inadvertently redefined your autotext. The default
FileName autotext just inserts a FILENAME field:

    { FILENAME }

Try redefining it again. Insert a Filename field (Insert/Field). Select
just the field. Choose Insert/AutoText/New... Enter FILENAME in the
inputbox and click OK. Click YES when asked to redefine the AutoText
entry.

I've tried this. It does not fix the problem. In fact, when I open a
header or footer window, "Filename" is no longer an option. What's a
boy to do?

Well, what *I* would do is, with Word closed, rename (or trash, if you
don't have customizations to keep) the Normal template (found in the
~:Documents:Microsoft User Data folder, where ~ is your home directory).
That will cause Word to create a fresh Normal, and the default Autotexts
will be restored.

If you renamed Normal, you can use the Organizer to transfer items to
the new Normal.

Before you try JE's fix, try this--

My guess was that you are showing Field Codes instead of Field Result.
See if hitting option-F9 to toggle the field codes, or control-clicking
the field and selecting Toggle Field Codes, brings it back to normal.

If that were the case, wouldn't the op just be seeing

    { FILENAME }

instead of

    <something> FILENAME file.doc <something>

Trashing the Normal Template fixed this problem. Thank you very much.

Copying Excel 2007 Charts as picture into Word
Having a heck of a time trying to automate a process where we copy Excel 2007 charts and paste to a Word document as pictures. The code works and copies all of the relevant ranges from Excel. But for some reason the chart object (and it doesn't matter what kind of chart, line, bar, pie, etc.) won't copy over to the Word document. Never had this problem in earlier versions of Excel. slipping text around linked Excel charts in Word
Hey guys :) I'm linking multiple charts from Excel into my thesis (Word), and expect to need to edit text above and below these charts as my thesis is revised. The problem I'm anticipating is that when I delete text above a large chart, it often leaves an empty void if the chart is too big to move up over the page break. What I would like is to have some text below the chart move up (slip around the chart) to fill this empty space. Pasting these charts in creates plugs/roadblocks for the text to get stuck between. Is there a way around this? Many thanks!!! Which version... May n...
