Exchange & SMTP Logs

Hello,

I am fairly new at Exchange 2003, I have a strong un*x background and have
been using sendmail for quite sometime. I was wondering about log files
with exchange. I have enabled SMTP logging which shows SMTP connections,
where do I find the log that shows why an email has been rejected?

Thanks!

Chris

The only place you'll see that is in the SMTP Protocol Logs. But the
information in the default set of columns isn't sufficient to see very
much. Go back to the SMTP Virtual Server's property page and click the
"Properties" button on the "General" tab. From there, select the
"Extended Properties" tab and check the necessary boxes (or just check
all of them).

If you're used to *nix MTAs and logs you'll be disappointed with the
SMTP logs here. There's no identifying message numbers in the log so
tracking a message from HELO to QUIT is an inaccurate royal PITA.

You'll find additional information in the Applications Log if you
increase the diagostics logging level on a few of the Transport
objects (see the "Diagnostics Logging" item on the property page of
the server object in the Exchange Systems Manager).

actually working?

You should be seeing the 554 (I think that's the code Exchange
responds with -- it might be a 550, I forget which one it uses) status
in the SMTP Protocol Log.

If you'd like a slightly better way to do this, look into using
Vamsoft's Open Relay Filter (http://www.vamsoft.com) It does more than
just check DNS RBL's and the log files it produces contain more useful
info (they don't replace the SMTP Protocol Log, though). The
software's not free, but it's not expensive either. They have a 30-day
try-before-you-buy grace period, too.

If you're interested in an opinion, depending solely on DNS RBL's for
protection isn't very effective (overall, it'll stop about 40% of all
junk mail, and it has a pretty high false positive rate). The IMF is
usually pretty good, but it's not very flexible and it may either work
very well for you, or it may let lots of junk through, or it may kill
a lot of legitimate mail. It's a "blackbox" that has one knob on the
outside. You get to select a number between 1 and 9 but you can't tell
what the filter's doing. If it works for you, use it.
