Exchange 5.5 config issue?

We're keeping our Exchange Server without much inhouse expertise, and
managing to support 140 users - so far so good. But I think we have a
setting or configuration problem. If an email in a client's Outlook Inbox
is there more than 2 or 3 days, reading, deleting, forwarding or any action
takes about 30 seconds to execute. You get the "Microsoft Exchange is
requesting Data from the server" dialog box with a subsequent 10 second or
so delay, and it's annoying. Is this a caching setting on the server, and
how can we extend the number of days that an email can be processed without
this delay?

We have Exchange 5.5 with Win2K Active Directory, and it's a Compaq Xeon
server with 2.2Ghz processor and 1,572,372KB RAM, 73,852 KB currently
available. Pagefile space listed as 3,514,208 KB. Anyone help?

Exchange 5.5 doesn't know anything about AD, it has its own directory.

The age of a message shouldn't affect how long it takes to read it.
The Information Store's pretty heavily indexed, so access to any one
message shouldn't take any longer than any other one.

Are there any events recorded in the Applications Log about the IS
being too fragmented? Are the normal IS Maintenance Tasks running
(check for event-id 1221, for example)?

Are you running an antivirus program? It's common for the real-time
protection to start a scan on an attachment before it opens up the message..
I know that Norton AV Corporate Edition Exchange agent does exactly that. If
the attachment hasn't been scanned before by the current signature file, it
scans the attachment. Depending on the load and the file size this can take
a few seconds. I've never heard of a work around other than to turn off
real-time protection and that ain't gonna happen in my network........ever.

With our backup situation I lost only 1 day of mail but wich is very important. Is there any way of recovering some mail from the recovered folders from the crashed HD. You will be able to recover mail from the last backup tape. Any mail sent your your domian after the crash is most likely being queued on ther SMTP Servers. Typically they are set to retry for 1-2 days. So the sooner you get your SBS 2003 restored the better. Otherwise the senders will re...
