Exchange 2003 OWA issue w/embedded URLs

I'm running Exchange 2003 in a front-end/back-end configuration, and
for the most part OWA works just fine. I have IIS configured so that
users don't need to type in the domain name when they login, and that
works. However if a user clicks a URL in a message, the authentication
box pops up, asking them to re-authenticate. The box will NOT accept
the username and password combination unless the user specifies
domain/username.

I guess there are two issues here, one why is it even prompting for
re-authentication, and two why won't it accept the "normal" combination
of username and password w/o the domain name.

Any help is appreciated.

When you click on a link in a message, OWA has nothing to do with
what's going on. The authentication may be coming from your proxy
server or from some other location. This is especialy true if you have
users working with OWA while using a VPN. If they're using a VPN do
they have the same problem if they drop the connection and work with
the just their ISP's connection?

The problem happens inside the LAN, on VPN, from the internet without
VPN, no matter what. There is no proxy server, BTW, inside the LAN. And
if the authentication box was coming from somewhere other than IIS/OWA,
the domain name/username combination wouldn't work. It's clearly my
domain that's asking for authentication.

Okay -- and what virtual directory's asking for the authentication and
does it have both integrated and basic authentication enabled?

This still sounds like an IIS problem not an Exchange problem.

Yes, I'm sure it's an IIS problem, but I posted here because it's OWA.
When I click a URL in a message it opens a new browser window, and the
address is the /exchweb/bin/auth directory. That directory did *not*
have integrated auth or basic enabled, but I enabled both and it still
doesn't work. I think it shouldn't even be prompting for a new set of
credentials. Must be some setting somewhere that's forcing it to
re-auth on a URL click.

Really? Mine has both enabled.

I just tried this and I get the same results as you -- but only for
the 1st link I click. After that it's okay.

The difference is probably the fact that the schemes for the URL's are
different. The OWA scheme is HTTPS and the link I clicked on is HTTP.
Is that the same in your case?

Good thought! I just tested and it's happening with both http: and
https:

If you're seeing it as well perhaps it's by design, or rather, just a
weird oddity. I actually don't think it's by design because if I login
the first time to OWA with domain\username rather than just username, I
can click the embedded links until the cows come home and they all
work. It's only when I login with only username at the initial
authentication that I have the problem.

Perhaps it's time for a call to the great gurus at 800-936-4900.

Thanks for your responses.

The reason that's happening is that the browser never knew the domain
part of the login -- it's provided by the default domain property on
the /Exchange virtual directory (IIS). If another virtual directory
needs the credentials (or https switches to http, or just switches to
something else), the browser can only respond to a challenge with what
it knows -- and that won't include the domain.

*major* functional issue with MOSS/WSS?
We are looking to move a big site over to using MOSS in a big as an alternative to shared network drives (ugh). One of the biggest issues is sending docs as attachments via email for others to edit. We'd like to get everyone to use the 'send a link' functionality from thew Sharepoint DL BUT when the user receives the email and clinks on the embedded link the doc opens read only. They then cant edit and save their changes. Seems a big an counter intuitive functional flaw. Are we missing something here? Is there any easy (for the end user) way to send those links to a doc ...

How do I get Powerpoint 2003 fade in 1 by 1 in 2007
I frequently used the 'fade in one by one' feature in Powerpoint 2003, which allowed me to fade in individual bullet points by way of a click of a mouse. Not only is this feature now not standard in 2007, but I can't work out how to create it: anything that I find, tends, instead, to fade the bullet points in on some kind of automatic time schedule, rather than - as I want - on a mouse click. I want only to use text, no sounds, no pictures, and nothing fancy. Currently, I am reduced to copying my material into an old Powerpoint 2003 presentation, but this is silly....

OWA. CA's. and Exchange 2007
The other day, I had to renew the Certificate on my Exchange 2007 server. Everything seemed to go alright, but eventually I received complaints that outbound email wasn't being sent. Looking at EMC showed all of the email queued up and waiting for something. After I relaxed the settings on my router (Allowed all outbound SMTP instead of restricting it to the Exchange server sending to MxLogic) all of the outbound email went though. I also was receiving reports of Webmail being broken (which was halfway fixed with the help of http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?Pr...

Access 97/2000/2003 comparisons
I have a rather large application that uses an access 97 database (DAO). We also have a version that works with access 2000, Oracle, msde, and SQLServer (ADO). We would like to retire the DAO version of the product, but there are places where the ADO version is much slower compared to where we run DAO seeks (very noticeable when looping). So, I have a few questions. 1. Are there any tips/tricks to speed up ADO queries to compare with DAO seeks? 2. Would there be any benifit in using access 2003 over previous versions of the software besides the added features (xml support, etc). 3...
