Exchange 2003 on a Domain Controller.

Hi All,

I have a WinNT/Ex5.5 to AD 2000/03 and Ex2k3 migration to
do. The client is a small company with only about 15
users. The are a network solutions company that needs
flexibility so SBS is out of the question.

My initial thought was to have 2 Win2k domain
controllers/file servers and one Win2k3 member server
running Ex2k3. They only have 2 Win2k server licenses and
1 Win2k3 server license.

The problem is that they want to be able to use RPC over
HTTPs. I understand that requires a 2003 Global Catalogue
server. So, my plan of the 2000 DCs doesn't work.

My question is: Is it OK to run Ex2k3 on a Domain
Controller? I've been reading lots of MS documentation
that says that it's supported but NOT recommended. They
say this is due to server load and disaster recovery.

I don't think server load will be an issue in this
environment but I am worried about disaster recovery as I
would have one 2000 DC/file server and one 2003 DC running
exchange.

I'd appreciate any thoughts/experiences/insights from
people who have done this. I'd also be interested in
other reasons why exchange on a DC is bad.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lisa

It is not preferable. However it is supported and done by smaller companies
who have no other options. Just be sure in addition to Exchange backups you
also take System State backups especially since this will be your only DC.

Hi Melissa,

Thank-you for the response.

Are there any other reasons why it's not preferable?

The other thing is that I don't want to just have one DC
so I was going to have the Exchange box as well as a
Windows 2000 domain controller. Will that cause any
problems? Does Exchange mind if there is a mixture of
2000 and 2003 DCs?

I thought I'd build the 2000 DC first, then build the 2003
server, dcpromo it to being a DC then install Exchange on
it. Does this sound right?

Thanks for your help!

Lisa

We merged an ADMTv2 created user account with an ADC created Contact, rather that the ADC created Disabled User. REstoring a mail sotre to a newly installed exchange 2003
Hi, I have a windows SBS 2003 server installed with a couple of mailboxes on it. I backed up the mail store then decided to reinstall the OS. The reason to do this was to partition the disk differently. So I installed the OS from scratch, and now I need to restore my mail store backup done using ntbackup. Should I recreate the old users on my SBS2003 system or should I just restore the mail store on top of the exisiting mailstore created by the fresh installtion of the OS. I didn't backup anything else but the mailstore. The newly installed server uses the same domain name as the ol...

I had one e-mail server on this domain it was giving us trouble so I installed a new server on the domain and made it an exchange server. Outlook 2003 from SBS2003

Since this has occured no one can use word 2002 (Office XP) as the default Message editor. It appears that Outlook 2003 has changed the default setting for saying Microsoft Word edit to now say Office Word 2003 which by the way is greyed out. Probably due to the fact that none of the clients have office 2003 installed on them on the new Outlook 2003 that occured during this upgrade. Any idea's wo...

Hi all, I have an odd situation where mail destined for a different administrative group in the same domain stops after a few days; a restart of the server where mails are queing clears the problem. The destination admin group is attached via a connector (smtp), and it's this connector that goes into a retry state under fault conditions.
