Email Issue #2

I'm having an issue that I can't seem to get to the bottom of. I can send
email without an issue except for when I'm emailing two doamins in
practicular. Our setup is such that mail sent via exchange is sent our
antispam/antivirus server using a smarthost and that server sends it out.
According to the logs a reverse dns lookup fails as the reason the mail is
being rejected. From some reserch this could happen if there is no pTR
record created in our DNS which in our case is hosted by our ISP. Would tyou
concurr that his would be a probelm.

Some administrators have configured their antispam systems to reject mail
from senders with invalid PTR records, so, yes, this could be a cause of the
problem you're seeing.

Hi,

Thank you for posting here.

From your description, I understand you can not send mails to some specific
domain, is it correct?

In order to address your issue better, can you tell me what domains are?

Based on my experience, some domains have strict policy to defend email,
for example AOL and Yahoo.
This problem typically occurs when your outbound Internet mail server does
not have the correct DNS configuration required to send mail to AOL.com.
The AOL.com mail server requires that a valid reverse DNS record (known as
PTR) for all of your domain's MX records. AOL.com also requires that for
every inbound SMTP connection, the connecting SMTP server must have a valid
PTR record even if an MX record does not exist.

Currently, if you SBS clients use Fixed IP address, it is better for them
to contact their ISP to request a PTR record and make sure this PTR record
hosted at ISP DNS server cannot be queried by internet client consistently.

If your Network adapter that is connected to the Internet is using a
dynamic IP address, you may have to configure your Exchange 2000 Server or
Exchange Server 2003 to route mail for the AOL.com domain through an SMTP
connector to a smart host. SMTP connector in SBS 2k3 is automatically
configured after running CEICW wizard.

Note: You may need to contact your ISP and destination domain for more
info. Some domains may reject SMTP communication that originate from
computers that use dynamic IP addresses, such as AOL.com, Earthlink.com,
and Roadrunner.com

Hope this helps, if you have any other concerns on this issue, please do
not hesitate to let me know.

Have a great weekend!

First of all thanks for the feedback. One thing is that we aren't using a
SBS server. We have Windows 20003 for both the exchnage and the antispam
server. What basically happens is that our exchange server forwards the
email to our anispam server through a smarthost and sends the email out.
According to our ISP even though we do not have a PTR record for our MX
records which they host this is no tthe issue. the name of our server is
this case is server_1.domain name is being presented to the receiving host's
smtp server and is producing a invalid helo command result which is causing
the mail to be rejected. One is the _ name in the server name causing a
probelm and if so why? Is there some way of determining whhat exceptable
standarsds are?

It really confusing becuase the MX record would resolve to our ISP. But
apprently we send the mail out on our own so the antispam server is
presenting itself to the receiving host?

Does this sound correct?

I'm getting a headache arguing with my ISP

You could find another ISP that doesn't give you a headache.

Talk to the administrator of one or more of the domains that's giving you
trouble and verify that they do indeed check for reverse DNS and present
that evidence to your ISP's representative.

Exchange 2003 / Outlook XP How to lock down email format / colour and disable signatures
My boss wants a uniform email look for everyone throughout the organisation, as users are using bizarre colours for email backgrounds, unusual fonts, and their own personal signatures. To create a standard signature for users using information from AD, I believe there are 2 ways: either create an event sink using a VB script (I dont know how to do do this, so I won't be trying); or use a third party application like Exclaimer (BTW is there a good alternative to this - I have a quote for this but it is pretty damn expensive for what it does). To prevent users from using their own signatur...

No more new fonts may be applied to this workbook #2
I have Excel 2003 (11.6113.5703) running on windows XP. I have loaded the latest update from the web. When I try to change the font size of text in the axis or label of a chart, a message shows "No more new fonts may be applied to this workbook." When I do a print preview of the charts, the same message shows up and then the print previews would be displayed. I'd appreciate if you can tell me the fix. Jon Peltier has some information on this in his Charting FAQ article: http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=209#jon025 and at his web site (use th...
