Converting .ost from ANSI to UNICODE during mailbox moves

One of the majore benefits of E2k3 sp2 that we are looking forward to as a
result of our migration are the improvements in OAB downloads for cached mode
users.

The reading I've done says you must be running in Unicode mode in order to
take advantage of these new features. Currently, all our mailboxes are on
5.5 servers, thus their cached mode .ost/.oab files are ANSI. When a mailbox
is moved, they remain ANSI.

MS KB article and ORK suggest that the solution is to use the Outlook Group
Policy setting Exchange Unicode Mode - Ignore OST setting. I've been
experimenting with this setting and it works as advertised with one rather
fatal flaw:

When the user is prompted to create the new .ost file, they are pointed to
the exact same location as the old file, and when they try to create the
file, they are given an error, and Outlook quits. If the user is not
prompted to create the file, instead Outlook just gives an error, pops up the
browse box for a new .ost file, again pointed at exactly where the old file
is, thus causing an error when either the dialogue is canceled, or the
default OK is clicked.

It would appear the only option is to have the user type in a different name
for their new .ost file...not a good option for 99% of users. We need this
transition to be as painless as possible. Plus, we will have duplicate
copies of the user's offline mailbox at that point.

Surely this problem has a solution...yet it seems no MS articles provide one.

I am thinking that if there is no other solution presented, I'll have to
create a login script that I control via group policy and security group
permissions. This script will delete the user's .ost and .oab files upon
logon, then leave a marker either locally or centrally so that the next time
it runs, it won't re-delete the files. Users will be added to the group that
has permissions to the policy as their mailboxes are moved.

Still, it seems a cumbersome solution to a problem that everyone is going to
have.

What have others done?

Thanks,

I assume you have read thi salready :

Seems to me that sending an announcement out to all your users that
they need to choose a new name for the ost *is* rather painless.

Yes, I have seen that already.

Well, I guess that depends on the size of the environment, general
competency level of the users, and the company's tolerance of user disruption.

For our environment, it just won't cut it. We will have to devise an
alternative solution if one does not exist already.

Thanks for the response though,

MS Office admin kit has tools to manage things like this. You can also
check out the http://www.desktopstandard.com (they used to make the
old policy maker software).
