controlling spam with MSExchange.UceContentFilter.xml

Hi

I need to know if there is a way of using a wild card word inconjunction
with the MSExchange.UceContentFilter.xml.

I will try to explain, recently our ISP who provide our first line spam
filtering changed their methods of controlling spam and since this change we
are getting alot more spam into our exchange systems. They delete obvious
spam but the ones they are a little unsure about they now send it out and
adjust the subject to include the word spam I now this sounds daft but just
go along with it.

So we are getting alot of spam with the different subjects all prefixed with
{spam} ie

{spam} buy some viagra

{spam} get a loan cheap today.

My question is could I create a custon weight entry to catch everything
prefixed with the {spam} prefix?

Somthing like this

<CustomWeightEntry Type="SUBJECT" Change="MAX" Text="{spam}*.*"/>

That is so funny and coincidental. I wrote and email to a client and he
replied back. When it came back to me the subject line was prefixed with
RE: [SPAM-LIKE] in front of my original subject. I had no idea what this was
and how it happened. I even went to my Sent mail and checked that it wasn't
somehow put there by myself unknowingly. So that is what that is all about.
Lesson to be learned here for you is that this is a legitimate email so if
you filter out all those prefixes you may be causing more harm than good. I
do use IMF v2 and am 99.99999% SPAM free.

What SCL gateway setting have you found to be a good number? I have mine set
to 8.

Way to high Paul. The SCL varies with all comapnies and sysstems. Personally
I have mine set at 5/4. How do I know this works for me? I monitor the
filtered SPAM with IMF Companion so I can see what is being filtered and
most of the time it is all SPAM. Once in a while a legitimate one will get
filtered but not enough of them to force me to back off of my SCL ratings.
When I do see a legitimate one I will add the oamin to my "Exception" list
and that usually takes care of any more from that domain getting filtered.
Are you using RBL's also. This really helps cut down on UCE's also.

There's no documentation of IMF supporting or using wildcards or regular
expressions in the msExchange.UceContentFilter.xml file, afaik. Tried once,
and failed to make it act on wildcards.

In fact, the sample xml code in SP2 Release Notes actually has separate
entries for stuff that could be wildcard-ed - like foo1 and foo2, instead of
foo*, which could be an indication of the fact that wildcards aren't
supported.

Here it is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
<CustomWeightEntries xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/2005/CustomWeight">
     <CustomWeightEntry Type="BODY" Change="1" Text="foo1"/>
     <CustomWeightEntry Type="BODY" Change="-1" Text="foo2"/>
     <CustomWeightEntry Type="BODY" Change="5" Text="Special offer"/>
     <CustomWeightEntry Type="BODY" Change="-9" Text="Verlngertes
Angebot"/>
     <CustomWeightEntry Type="SUBJECT" Change="MIN" Text="????"/>
     <CustomWeightEntry Type="BOTH" Change="MAX" Text="Offre spciale"/>
</CustomWeightEntries>

Actually I'm with Paul, 8 is good, although we set ours down to 7 at night
when there are far fewer real messages floating around to get inadvertently
blocked. I've sent some short test messages that the SCL gave a 5 to, so I'm
really uncomfortable with going that low.

Whatever works with your email system. there is nothing written in stone at
what level the SCL ratings should be set. Best way to figure what works for
you is go with the defaults, monitor and then make your adjustments.

Object to use for sending URL / retrieving XML
How do I get XML results from a URL into a set of variables (or controls on a form, or anywhere else I can use them within Access)? I need to build an interface to the Washington State tax code URL interface as a small part of a much larger application that has been running for several years. Their site accepts address-related arguments as part of the URL, then returns XML results. Here is the URL, using their example address (probably their office), so there is nothing confidential here: http://dor.wa.gov/AddressRates.aspx?output=xml&addr=6500 Linderson way&city=&am...

What is the Best XML API for .NET 3.5?
I’m starting a new project which will dynamically generate (user will have to pick and choose data, then generate the XML dynamically) RDLC for Reporting. My approach was to use LINQ to XML for the API. My question is what is the best API to use? Performance is no concern, most critical factor is that the code be easy to maintain easy to dynamically generate the mark-up for the RDLC. Note: We are all ready using LINQ to XML in the main application. This is for the reprinting module of the application. -- Alexander L. Wykel AW Software Works Alexander Wykel wrote: > I’m start...
