antivirus removed active log file, db now labeled inconsistent.

Hi

At 10:30 on Friday night Mcaffee labled th E03.log file for 2 mailbox stores as a virus and then tried removing it from the log file folder. This caused the 2 stores to dismount. In my panic I copied the quarantined file over the E03.log file. Stupid, I know. The databases are have now been labled as inconsistent. NO BACKUPS!! We were in the process of changing our backup system so the last valid backup is for the 12 of June.

The other mailbox stores have been remounted and are operational.

As mail was starting to queue and we are a 24/7 company I spent 5 hours recreating user accounts. They only way to do this was to delete the mailbox and recreate a new store in a new location. Moving the mailbox to a new store kept failing. All users from the inconsitent databases are operational but with new empty mailboxes!

I have tried running eseutil /p but has only given me a working blank database. I then dismounted that and copied a copy of the edb and stm files to that edb.

I then tried running exmerge and it tells me that "no user mailbox information was found in the database specified". The edb files are 18GB and 12GB so there must be info in them!

Eseutil /r failed and Eseutil /p gave me a blank database. I made copies of the 4 files before runnning eseutil.

Can anyone please give me advice as to recover the information in those databases? I have tried the recovery storage group, but when the database mounts there are no mailboxes under the mailbox tab. Is that right. Will I still be able to use exmerge to get info out of that db if there are no mailboxes in view?

Thanks
Viv

Best way to deal with this is to call MS PSS and ask for help. If this
is not possible pretend that you have damaged log file and follow

Stop. Before you do anything else, take a backup of where you are
right now. It will allow you to return to your current state so you
can try multiple restore strategies if necessary.

Next. Call PSS.

Will the backup be worth anything if the E03.log file is corrupt? I have made a file copy of the EDB and STM files, will they be worth anything? I will run a windows backup and test it.....

Since the store is not mounted, do a file level backup of the Exchange
data directories.

I made a copy of both edb and stm files and the edb files are 18gb and 12gb yesterday. I also have 2 weeks worth of log files up to the point that the antivirus software corrupted the e03.log. Can I do anything with those log files?

Thanks, I will work through those links and see what helps. I do believe I have a corrupt/damage log file, so hopefully one of these links will work.

Thanks
Viv

Hi

One of the links lets me test the transactions logs, I have tested the last 10 files and all seem consistant? Does this mean my database or check files is corrupt?

I thought the E03.log file was corrupted, obviously not.....

Then what happens when you attempt to mount stores? Look in App Evemt
log for clues.
BTW, check integrity of logs with esefile - they should not be damaged.
