Upgrading CRM 3.0 from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade CRM 3 to CRM 4 but currently our CRM 3 runs on
SQL 2000 and according to the upgrade path CRM4 requires SQL 2005!

So, what is the process of upgrading SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 for CRM? I have
found the method of upgrading SQL itself whcih basically entails installing
2005 SQL then moving the 2000 databases to the 2005 instatnce, but will this
work OK for CRM as well? Are there any other steps/dependancies than need to
be considered.

Thanks in advance (of a long night upgrading!)

Upgradation is SQL Server 2005 installation which will upgrade from SQL 200
to 2k5.

Better is if you install SQL server 2005 seperately on the machine and then
use CRM 4.0 to upgrade it with new SQL Server 2005. While installation
mention destination SQL server to 2k5.

Thanks Imran, however I am a bit confused by your reply...

The SQL 2005 installation does not appear to 'upgrade' SQL 2000 in the
traditional sense. It installas along side SQL 2000 and then you must 'move'
the SQL 2000 databases over to SQL 2005 then uninstall SQL 2000. There does
not seem to be a simple 'upgrade' option when installing SQL 2005.

Are you also saying that we should install SQL 2005 then install CRM 4.0 and
somehow during the CRM 4 upgrade process tell it to use the SQL 2005 database?

I will look at the implementation guide, however these are always
notoriously complex large documents! Any quick overview assistance would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Nik,

I suggest you have another look because SQL Server 2005 does have an option
of performing in-place upgrade of SQL 2000 installation.

Hi George,

Thanks for the info but I couldn't find any articles anywhere on this and
there does not seem to be any options to 'upgrade' when you run the
installation of SQL 2005. I'm using SQL 2005 Standard Edition disks, running
setup does not give any options for upgrade. Am I missing something here? Do
I need a specific version? Thre is a prepare for upgrade analysis tool which
I run but this does not result in an 'upgrade'.

I hate it when there are not some simple instructions for common questions
like this. The deployment guide is 350 pages long! Even this only refers to
installing 2005 then moving or importing the existing 2000 databases.

Could you give me any further pointers, sorry to trouble you but it seems as
though you know what you are talking about!.

Thanks in advance

Lost Active Directory for Microsoft CRM 3.0
Hi, We recently had a server failure on our Domain Controller which was unrecoverable and our backups for active directory failed to restore. The CRM database and application are on a seperate server so is fully intact. But we have lost the AD, which means no access. My question is what is the best method if any to recover the CRM system?
