Trial install CRM4 - all green ticks but still cant login !!!

Having completed the laborious task of installing CRM 4 onto a virgin SBS
install with SQL 2005, I find that I am still unable to login to
http://server2:5555 using IE

IIS is working:
http://server2 provides the default website as expected
http://server2/reportserver provides the report server ok too.

http://server2:5555 , and I have also tried http://server2.test.local:5555
with the same results...

When run from the DC's Internet Explorer:
"Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) "

When run from a Vista's Internet Explorer:
"Server Error in '/' Application. Runtime Error"

Attempting to login with the credentials (these accounts do exist in AD) :

  test\administrator
  administrator@test.local
  test\user
  user@test.local

passwords have been reset for these accounts, so i feel passwords may not be
the problem.

All services are running on the same machine, a DC, the vista client is
using IE7 and is a member of the domain.

As stated IIS is installed as default with CRM creating a new website, the
application pools are all using "Network service" as their Identitiy.

Part of the problem is that there is soooo much documentation for planning
and such its difficult to find any specific information... could somebody
direct me on how to proceed with throubleshooting this problem.

Thanks in advance

Stu Hill

Hi,

I have just completed an install with similar problems and have found that
the issue lies with the DNS configuration and Kerberos.

I added the IP and Server name to the Hosts file on each client machine to
bypass DNS and everything seems to work ok now. I spoke to Microsoft support
as well and they recognise this as a workaround to the problem.

To change your hosts file navigate to C:\Windows\System 32\drivers\etc

Once you have added the IP and Server name restart the client and try
accessing the CRM site again, you should not be asked for a user name and
password as the site uses Integrated Windows Authentication.

Hope this helps.

Hi "News" thanks for the reply.

I added the information to the hosts file, restarted but the problem remains.

I am not convinced it is a DNS issue as I am able to browse/ping "server2"
with no problems.

The fact that I am being asked for authentication "again" even though i am
logged in with domain credentials i think may be significant, but i dont know
how to investigate :D

Thanks again

This does sound like a DNS/Kerberos issue. Even though you can ping the
server does not mean your DNS is set properly for Kerberos.

Another work around might be to create a CNAME in your DNS and point it to
server2 and then add the host header to the site in IIS. This work around
will not work with the Outlook Client software but will give you web based
access.

Hope this helps

Thank you for your help David, my expererience with DNS is more from a noob
administrator point of view, and I certainly have no experience with
kerberos, i cant even tell if it is running (isnt it a bolt-on to windows
server 2003?).

I will see what else i can read on the web but im just swamped with
information - meandering from document to document with no structured
solution path ahead of me, feels like a mountain to climb!!

Perhaps we should just stick with ACT!

What version of SBS are you using?

Can you start CRM from the SBS server?

Cheers,

Marc

Hey, Stu!

This is 100% kerberos-related. What are you using as your service accounts
on the SQL Server, the SQL Reporting Server, and the CRM Server? If you are
using local accounts, you need to swap them out to either domain accounts or
use NT Authority\Network Service as the service accounts for each of the
installed. If you don't use the Network Service account and you use domain
accounts, you'll need to set SPN's (Service Principal Names) for each
account. No matter what, you'll need to enable Trust for Delegation on each
Windows server. There's some good documentation out on TechNet for
configuring kerberos on Windows 2003 server, as well as, more specific
servers, such as SQL Server or SharePoint.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

The installation document for HRP Suite needs editing
The installation document HRPSuiteInstallation.PDF omits any reference to uninstalling PTO Manager. It also needs some comments about the upgrade process and a reminder to back up databases before starting table updates. Finally, a customer installing one product in the suite should not need to load all those .cnk files. It causes unnecessary launch file bloat. This document can and should be much more user friendly.
