CRM 3.0 Implementation

I am interested in the experiences of others with implementing Microsoft CRM
3.0. I am a one man development team who has been tasked with implementing
CRM 3.0 with 30 users initially.

Our organization has been running on Lotus Notes for quite a while. We moved
to echange for e-mail over a year ago but still use Lotus for custom
databases. The first step will be pulling the data from Lotus Notes to CRM.

I have looked into the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Certification. There is a company
that offers a 10 day CRM 3.0 boot camp. Is this a good idea, and at what
point should I take it? We would like to implement as soon as possible
however, we want to be very smart about it.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. If there is anyone out
there that has done a Lotus to CRM migration I would really be interested in
talking to them over the phone if possible. Thanks for your time.

Hi Thomas,

We have a similiar number of users to you and only recently completed
deployment.

I would recommend going on the Microsoft course 8526A - CRM 3.0 Installation
& Configuration. This takes you through a real-world installation,
uninstallation and redeployment and provides a good level of knowledge on
which to build upon. If your 10-day course includes this course and the two
further Microsoft certified CRM 3.0 programs then i would recommend it, but
if it is curriculum created by a 3rd-party i would have to question it.

I have a three server setup for deployment (as opposed to single-server) -
1x DC, 1x Exchange Server, 1x SQL server and 1x CRM server. After going on
the course i had no problems running through installation and configuration
and have also recently set up a development server inside a Virtual Server
image. All is working smoothly.

In relation to lotus notes - not able to help you a great deal but i do know
there is a data migration tool included on the CRM CDs that allows you to
import sets of data into CRM - so if you can export from lotus notes to say
excel or something similiar (CSV etc...) then you shouldn't have a problem
importing.

Hope this helps.

Thomas,

I would be a bit cautious for 'Boot Camps'. They are typically designed to
cram you full of stuff so you can pass the certification exams. Your ability
to actually apply that knowledge might be another thing. I don't know what
company you're looking at, and probably wouldn't know anything about them
anyway :-) But I doubt that 10 days will you a CRM expert make. And the
secret to a successful CRM implementation goes far beyond being able to
install and configure it, especially with 10 day 'experience'.

I agree with Larry.
Planning for and implementing MSCRM needs a deep overview of the entire
system.

This way if things go wrong in the layers that MSCRM runs on, you can
address them and not the symtoms.

I recently did an install last week and it was as if the client had left a
mine field for me. I worked through all the issues and some of them were
odd. But the install is done despite all the "NT 4.0" attributes of their
network.

Three and a half years of installs and I thought I had seen it all, but I
was wrong.

On the other hand I did an Deployment in a Data center in Iowa this afternoon.

It went very smooth because I did all the prerequisites and triple checked
all connectivity before the install. It ran like a top.

As for the virtual server guys, this can work even in production. Not just
in development.
Given the time it takes to "Build" the install it's a good Idea. It saved
me two weeks again in a failed migration.

Data migration strategy from custom MSSQL-based app to CRM 4.0
Hello, We have a client looking to transition to CRM 4.0 from their current home-grown application based on SQL Server 2005. I am curious to get suggestions from the group on how to approach this. Here is one approach I am considering: 1. Create denormalized views in SQL (picklist values included instead of PK/FK keys) 2. Script queries to these views that send query results to a CSV file 3. Create data mappings in DMF to perform mass import 4.
