Word 2007 and Microsoft Updates

There was an automatic update applied to my Vista 64 bit system, probably on
2/10 or 2/11. Word stopped working. If I wanted a word count it stopped
responding, if I wanted to change the list for a Word merge operation it
stopped responding, if I tried to open a document it would stop responding.
I have restored my system to 2/9 and everything worked again. Last night
Vista updated and Word was broken again.

I've restored to 2/9 but I can't find any other discussion about the
problems the update created. Any other users having the same problem?

I have turned off automatic updates but sure would like to find the root of
the problem.

Maybe this...

That's a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word has
been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption include:

. The mouse does not work when you use Word.
. You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
. You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
. Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
. Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
. Word crashes when you save a document.
. Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
fix that will do this for you.

My wife's laptop has the same problem as Karen's. So, tried this fix you
suggested twice. Once on my own and the other using Microsoft's Fix-it. Word
still shuts down after opening and Microsoft is saying that there is no
problems (with disk, path, memory, or software).
I also removed and reinstalled Office 2007 Student edition, as well as
intalling the SP2. Still no luck. I was thinking about restoring from her
backup, but the date is 2-21 and I don't think this one will work.

Try renaming the normal.dotm template to oldnormal.dotm and then restart

Laptop?

Word must be able to see a fully compatible, locally installed printer
driver set as the Windows Default to work correctly. Do you have one
installed?

Formatting Lost in Excel 2007
Good afternoon, I've spent a lot of time googling but all I really came up with is that it may be due to links (which I have deleted) so hopefully someone out there will have an answer. We have a very large workbook that has been used since before 2005 that we have never had a problem with. Two months ago, we started using Excel 2007 but had no issues. Windows XP: Open file in read-only: Word, Excel, Visio
I'm often sharing files on a network drive with someone. Often, one of us knows that we don't need to open a file for modification, and we only need read-access. Is there a way to open a file in read-only mode so that when someone does need to open it for modification, the read-only user is not blocking that? If there is not a way to do this native to Windows XP, is there a way to do it from the three applications that we use most, namely Word, Excel, Visio? All are 2003 versions. Thx. Cannot upgrade to Word 2007 from Word 2002 as word crashes when tr
We have a word add in that programatically inserts an auto text table then adds rows to it. This works ok in Word 2002 but occasionally crashes in Word 2007 - this is not a consistent crash when we carry out the same operation it happens in no specific sequence. The only place we are able to track it down to is the auto text table inserting rows. Word itself is crashing. We are using COM AddIn written in VB6.
