Turn off all sharing and network discovery

I originally posted this to microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web,
but I noticed that many most topics that could go into specialised
subgroups actually get posted microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.
Due to the low traffic in the subgroups, I was afraid that my question
might be missed.

I am trying to turn off any kind of file/printer/resource sharing on
Windows XP Pro SP3. First, I must admit that this is XPM virtual
machine, but I got limited (though helpful) information at the technet
forums *and* I believe that much of what I want to turn off is XP-
specific rather than requiring knowledge of the virtual machine nature
of XPM.

The computer will be the only one in a home situation, and will access
the internet through a combination DSL modem router. The computer
will connect to the modem router through either LAN cable or WiFi. So
I don=92t really need any sharing, network resource discovery, remote
diagnostic, etc..

Here is what I=92ve done after much reading on the internet. Your
comments on whether it=92s enough, too much so as to interfere with
normal operation, and some of the questions about what encountered in
applying the settings would be very much appreciated.

=95WindowsExplorer->Tools->FolderOptions->View->AutoSearchForFile/
PrinterSearch: I disabled this while the Windows Explorer was
displaying the top-level C-drive folders.

=95Using Network Setup Wizard, specify that I connect directly to the
internet (no local network). It asks for a WorkGroup name ?? I
cancelled it because I don't want to create a network (not sure what
the implications are for security/sharing)

=95Disabled LAN Properties "Client for M$ Networks" and "File and
Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".

=95Changed Workstation service from Automatic to Disabled

=95Disabled Guest account

=95Disabled Simple File Sharing (as above, Windows Explorer was on the C-
drive)

=95I looked at Windows Firewall Exceptions: (1) Should Network
Diagnostics be checked if I only use my DSL router/modem to connect to
the outside rather than with local computers? (2) Same with Remote
Assistance?

=95I looked at Properties for C-drive: Sharing tab shows =93Share this
folder=94 selected =96 should it be? When I click on Permissions, I get
=93This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permissions
cannot be set.=94

=95I checked the sharing properties of C-drive's 4 folders: =93Documents
and Settings=94, =93I386=94, =93Program Files=94, =93WINDOWS=94. Only the =
WINDOWS
properties show that it as being shared =96 why should it be shared?

=95Following http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=3D304040 I tried to apply
=93Level 1=94 access to shares and files. However, the Sharing tab for My
Documents doesn=92t have a switch to =93Make this Folder Private=94. How t=
o
execute this?

=95In the above site, why is Level 1 (or any level for that matter)
applied only to My Documents? Can=92t a user create folders above My
Documents in the folder tree? And wouldn=92t you want to protect non-
user folders high up in the folder tree?

Thanks.

teh first reply links out. its wording implies xp-mode may be using networking to
talk to win7 "host" (I didn't know what 'xpm' is, but i don't have win7 anyway)
a reply in comments recommends AV in xp and winxp OS updates. this makes
me wonder if you do also need a firewall "inside" the vm, because win7 treats xp in
vm as a "blackbox"?

btw about blackviper. tone of recommendatons may vary. compare:
http://wiki.blackviper.com/wiki/DNS_Client#General_Information
and vista
http://wiki.blackviper.com/wiki/DNS_Client#Additional_Information_2
Only in extreme situations should you disable this service as caching DNS
lookups reduces network traffic and makes internet surfing performance faster

but (older opinion?) for xp
http://wiki.blackviper.com/wiki/DNS_Client#Additional_Information_4
This service is not required for DNS lookups, but if it makes you happy to have it
running, you may. If you attempt to "repair" your network connection and a dialog
box complains that the "DNS resolver failed to flush the cache," this service is the
reason. It is also needed if using IPSEC Services.

Creating CRM appointment in Outlook shared calendar
Hi there, I have read previous entries on this subject (link included below), but has anyone found an add-on or solution within Outlook to resolve the issue where Personal Assistants (or any CRM users) can't link an Outlook appointment to CRM within another users Calendar. I have looked at c30s GroupCalendar which looks good, however, our clients prefer to use the Outlook interface.. Any suggestions welcome. Sharing Calendars from the Server
Hello, We have a Windows 2003 Small Business Server with Exchange. The owner of the company would like to have access to all his employees calendars (which is less than 10 people). I know how to share out the calender by logging in as a user and sharing it via Outlook, but is there a way to make the same configuration changes from the server? I'd like to expodite the sharing process (and learn a new trick)! Many Thanks, Grant ...

shared workbook
Hi, I have an Excel workbook that is shared among three users. The file has bloated to a file size of 15MB. When I unshare it the file size decreases to 800KB. If I reshare it the file size remains at 800KB. Why does Excel not clear the bloat automatically? Is it not a good idea to unshare and then reshare the workbook to shed off the excess, i.e. are you getting rid of important backgound data and in doing so causing problems later on? TIA, Jarryd Jarryd I've been pulling my hair out for the past 2 weeks trying to figure ou why my shared excel file grows at an abnormal ...

reading pane keeps turning on and preview pane keeps turning off
I've been using outlook 2007 for about 6 months and all has been ok until now. My normal view is to have the reading pane turned off and the preview pane turned on. however, now things changed all of a sudden. now when ever I go to the inbox the reading pane is turned on and the preview pane is turned off. So I go to the view menu and reset the view to what it should be. if I click on any other folder such as sent items and back to the inbox, its back to reading pane on and preview pane off. This is the same behavior for all folders. any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks. -- ...

Does Remote Desktop Services (in 2008 R2) plug and play on an SBS 2003 network?
We have SBS 2003 R2 and would like to put up a terminal server (on a separate box, of course). Must the old 2003 version be used, or can R2 be used? I'd very much like to use R2, particularly since increasingly the clients are Win7, but not if it wreaks havoc on the network due to an SBS conflict of some kind. Thanks. Works fine. The same steps are used as for a Server 2003 TS, except that the RD License server MUST be at least Server 2008 SP2 or later. So your best bet is to simply run it locally on the Server 2008 R2 server. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/rus...

How do you turn off autoformatting?
I am making a spreadsheet that is essentially a record. In one of the cells, I am entering the old/new values for something as 4/80, which Excel instantly turns into April-80. I can format the the cell back to General, but the number that results is not 4/80. And if I go in and reset it to 4/80 again, the autoformatting kicks in again and the whole process starts over. While there are plenty of ways I could work around this, from changing the way I enter the data on up, it has become a sort of matter of honor now. How the heck do I stop Excel from overriding everything I enter? -- nickt --...

Sharing the GAL between two forests
My current setup is one Exchange 5.5 Organization with two sites. One site in the US and one in the UK connected by site connectors. The two domains have a trust between them and we both share the GAL. We have recently upgraded both domains to Windows 2003. They are still two separate domains and a separate forest. We are currently working on migrating both to Exchange 2003. My question is, can two domains share the GAL if they are in different forest(AD)? Is there a way we can share the GAL after the migration? What are my options? Third party tools? Script? Any help would be...

How to turn Off and On the pesky Office Assistant?
