Server 2003 update problem

This server is running server 2003 sp2, hasn't been updated in quite a while,
was a terminal server but not any more. When I run windows update it wants to
install a new version of update. It fails with error 0x8024D007. I tried a
few troubleshooting steps I found online without success. One of these was to
unregister and re-register wuaueng.dll. It will not re-register, gives the
message "dllregisterserver in wuaueng.dll failed. Return code was
0x80070514". I renamed this dll and it was recreated but still the same
error. I expanded the dll from the 2003 disk to the system32 folder but it
still will not register. The automatic update service doesn't exist any more
as a result.
I ran sfc /scannow which made no difference.

This didn't resolve it unfortunately.

When doing the manual reset I had a few problems.

Errors when registering some dlls:

mshtml.dll was loaded but the dll registerserver entry point was not found.
This file cannot be registered

dllregisterserver in wuaueng.dll failed. Return code was 0x80070514

loadlibrary("wucltux.dll") failed - the specified module could not be found.
wuwebv.dll

All others registered successfully.

The reset winsock command was not found.

Download the most recent version of WUAgent and install it manually:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928

If still no joy, you may be seeing the effects of a hijackware infection.

Manual install failed with the same error code.
I have ran multiple malware and anti-virus applications, Eset, Kaspersky,
Malwarebytes anti-malware, spybot, avg, adaware. I have quarantined/deleted
anything found, even though I think they were false positives.
The problem still exists.

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Visual basic objects printing problem
I have a workbook with checkboxes created using Visual basic. Every time I print, the checkboxes shift to the left. I can either edit the document to put the boxes back where they were or close without saving and reopen the document and the formatting is restored. I checked the properties and the objects show to be locked. This is a bug in Office XP SP3. To fix it, you must put the boxes back where they belong, then select each one and Format/Object and change from "Move but don't size with cells" TO "move and size with cells". If you do this from the Proper...

Upgrading from server 2000 to server 2008R2?
We would like to upgrade our servers to Windows server 2008 R2. Currently we have two Windows 2000 (SP 4) domain controllers, we want to replace the Forest Root Domain box with new hardware & upgrade the other DC to server 2008 R2. I understand it's not possible to upgrade from 2000 straight to 2008 but is server 2003 still available to ugrade to in between? I'm also not sure of what the implications of retiring the Forest Root Domain box would be? Would the best plan be to add the new 2008 server (domain function & forest function level: 2000); upgrade the se...
