automatic updates now required??

I keep automatic updates turned off. I just went to update site and was
not allowed to proceed. I got error 0x8DDD0018.
It tells me I have to have Automatic Updates running. Is this now true?
Previously I always did my updates manually.

Absolutely not. It is strongly recommended to stop all updates on
Windows XP because M$ updates post SP3 are designed to sabotage your
system so that you buy Windows 7.

If you want to install a specific update, then you need to know the KB #
and then go to Microsoft website and search for it.

You could use Microsoft Update Catalogue but yo will have to install its
ActiveX to use it and you will need to use Internet Explorer version 6
or later.

0x8DDD0018 - ErrorAUDisabled

Does enabling Control Panel | Automatic Updates correct the problem?

=> You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or
the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337

Could the problem be that the Service named Automatic Updates (as well as
BITS) isn't running?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

The fact you have the gumption to actually post "hth" after that is funny.

Unless your "hth" means something different than those actually trying to
assist people...

I can see a couple of those fitting you and your personality.

Thank you very much. In services.msc the auto updates was not running. I
set that to automatic, and I was able to get my new updates.

Apparently this auto updates in services is different than the option to
have Windows get updates automatically (the one if the Control panel).
Slightly confusing

YW. But if (Control Panel >) Automatic Updates had been enabled, the
Automatic Updates (and BITS) services would have been enabled, too.

Are you aware of the fact that there's are Automatic Updates (AU) settings
other than Automatic? See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

If you choose the "Notify Only" setting, AU will notify you of available
updates in a timely manner. Then you can decide whether, when, and how you
want to download/install updates.

Updating RMS database with out crashing system
Is it possible to update records in the RMS database using SQL statements that are coming from an external source (ie. other programs that are connected via ODBC) with out crashing POS terminals? We want to add order records and update fields for records in the customer table using custom internal software. RMS is based on MS SQL Server. I've just upgraded from Money 2003 to 2005 SB. Since then, my investments are automatically updated everytime I bring up the portfolio page. I can't find this feature in the new version. Anyone know where it is? Thanks, Max McGovern Max, it isn't there. You will get automatic uploads everytime you open Money 2005. Update
I wanted to share my findings with the group regarding the Time stamp issue, as it seems to be a rather rare and ambiguous subject. As it turns out, the time stamp is quite a useful feature and RMS fully supports it. The main benefit is that it allows the store or a particular department to remain open and make sales, while the physical inventory is being taken. Consider the following scenario: At 8:00 am you run your new Physical Inventory Count sheet. At 8:15 you scan item Z with a quantity of 8. At 8:30 you sell 2 of item Z off the shelf. At 9:00 you upload the counted items into a fi...
