SBS Connectivity issues - 111648

Experiencing intermittent delays and dropped connections to Small Business
Server. Config is: SBS2003 SP2 (all current patches) running on HP ML110
server; 4 PCs onsite - 3 used by onsite staff; 1 used by remote user to
access server via RWW.

Users run basic Office apps, Outlook, Quickbooks, internet access. Also
have an Avaya VIOP phone system (4 phones) on the network. Everything has
been in place for almost 4 years.

Having more frequent connectivity issues. Onsite PCs show delays in Outlook
connecting to Exchange ('Trying to connect ...). Remote user reports dropped
connection via RWW (VBScript: Remote Desktop disconnected). One other user
reports dropped VPN connection. This person also accesses Exchange via
Outlook RPC with HTTP, and that also give errors (connection to Exchange
server has been lost, then connection to server restored). Last, but not
least, users now reporting dropped phone calls.

DSL internet - carrier says no errors on line or modem. Not sure if there
is a problem on the SBS server that is causing slow downs? I have updated
NIC driver, and disabled TCP Chimney. No better.

No error messages in any server logs.

Ideas?

First thing is to download, update, and run the SBS BPA and fix anything
it finds.

www.sbsbpa.com

Then look to the server nic, the switch and the patch cables as resonable
failure points.

I do have the SBS BPA. Ran it - gives me a few errors primarily related to
WSUS 3.0 (Not integrated with SBS 2003 R2, need to updated to SP3). No other
errors.

My server NIC has a diagnostic tool that tests cables. It is showing a
short on 2 pairs, so going to swap the cable. Will start from there and work
my way to the switch and router, eliminating along the way.

Will update when I find something.

Thanks for the suggestions.

GraphicsServer w/ MFC issue: Graph is in the forefront of the screen & doesn't minimize
I'm trying to debug an MFC application that plots data using a graphing toolkit from Graphics Server. The problem is that the actual graph is always on the forefront of the screen meaning even if I open any other program(s) on my computer and maximize it, the graph from the MFC app is on top blocking the view of the other program I just opened. I suspect that this phenomenon of have the graph always in the "forefront" of the screen is somehow being "forced" in the code. I do know tha the MFC application itself is made to take up the entire screen and cannot be minimized...

SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 migration headache!
Hi folks, Hoping someone can help me :( After spending yesterday prepping the source server- running both SBS 2003 Best Practices Analyzer and Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (and resolving all issues until they both came back clean), full backup, Migration Prep Tool, answer file etc I was finally ready to get going with the destination server today. I was very thorough with the documentation, taking it all step by step. All looked well, until it seemed to hang on what looked to be a final step. I don't recall getting the replication delay pop-up that I've seen m...

Connect to Database: Error #430
Hi, I have hit a wall on a new installation and I wondered if anyone out there has a fix for this? There are no OPOS drivers on the computer and it has the latest MDAC. We have installed and uninstalled RMS 2.0 and SQL 2005 Express multiple times. Using an ODBC we can connect to the database. Using SQL tools we can connect to the database. The only problem is RMS. In Administrator you get this error using File > Connect or on the Configuration tab when you test the configuration. Needless to say - Manager does not open. The full error is below: Connect to Database: Error #4...

OWA setup on SBS 2003
Hi, I can't access OWA on an SBS 2003 server, for any user. Not sure what is stopping it - is it ISA settings? I've checked in Active Directory Users and Domains under the user and they are permitted to use OWA. Also tried to connect using Sever Activesync and a smart phone, but that failed too. Hope you can help. Neil Hi, Could be ISA server stopping OWA from functioning, could also be a lot of other things (like permisions on folders, web site etc). What happens when you try to access OWA? Outlook Client Connectivity
I am trying to connect to the CRM Server via the Outlook client, but have run into what appears to be an authentication issue. The computer that has the outlook client installed is on a different domain than the CRM Server, and the user has a different username/pass combination to login into the domain than he does to login to CRM and the CRM domain. We have no problems logging into the web client, it just asks us for username/password. But, the outlook client just gives a message saying "There is a problem communicating with the Microsoft CRM Server. The server might be unavai...

Can Not Connect to Exchange Server after Mailbox Move
I have 2 exchange servers. While logged into the domain, and at the location, I can log into the email system just fine. While remote VPN in, I can not access the server. I can ping the server, I can see all shares, and I can even access the printer and print from the exchange server. But I can not get to it with email. Any Ideas? Migrating AD Back to SBS
We had a domain which was working in a SBS2003 normally but since we had to change the hardware we added a second DC which is a windows 2008 and transferred all the roles to it, and let it working alone. Everything is fine now with the win2008 as a only Domain Controller We now have to reinstall back the SBS2003 and transfer everything to it from the win2008, is that possible? is there any how-to or best practices? As it seems that all i can do is start a new domain from scratch. Thanks, Chris There is an official MS document for adding SBS 2003 to a Server 2003 domain, but...

Change from SBS 2003 to SBS 2003 R2
Does anyone know if the license from Windows SBS 2003 works on R2 Edition? Here's my situation: I have an old server running Win SBS 2003. This is a new client and i just found the installation to be all screwed up (they are not even using Exchange, the domain is not .local, I cant find the SBS management panel, etc ) and barring any magic solution that allows me to improve on the current install, what i really want is to start from scratch, probably on different hardware (new server). So I whas thinking to my buttons: During reinstallation, can I now use the latest ver...

GP 9.0 Login Issues
There are two users that are having issues logging into great plains and keeping connected. It doesn't happen every day, only sometimes, but whenever one of them logs in to Great Plains 9.0 it kicks the other user out, even if they are the only two users on the system with 10 users allowed at a time. At times when one person logs in she sees the welcome screen of the other person that usually kicks her out. I wondered if this has happened to anyone else and how it could possibly be resolved. As far as I know these are the only two users it happens to. They both have completely sepa...

CAsyncSocket, cannot connect to computers not in my subnet
Maybe this is a network question, I don't know. I have this weirdness with my socket class that is derived from CAsyncSocket. 6 months ago I was able to connect to computers that are not in my subnet, however I was using port 80 to test, ie (www.yahoo.com:80). I am trying to connect to computers that are not on my subnet on port 10001 but the OnConnect callback said it failed. i.e. my IP 192.168.1.100 and I am attempting to connect to a computer with a fixed IP of 192.168.2.122. Both computers have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, both computer do NOT have a default gateway. I will ha...

ODBC Connection
I have a problem with an ODBC Connection on a client workstation. I have followed all of these posts on all of these forums and nothing has resolved the issue. I'm receiving the error message Connection failed: SQL State: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 Now a lot of the resolutions say to go into the Client Configuration and setup the server name to the following. "servername\instancename" with port 1433. Welp this isn't happening. Caution, a User DSN works ONLY for the user that created it. It is not recommended. When you created the ODBC...

Folder Redirection and roaming Profiles issue
Hi, I had set up some users with Roaming profiles via their profile tab in ADU&C. I had used a Group Policy to Redirect their My Docs and Desktop to a folder on the server and have one folder per user only accessible by that user. That was a year or two ago. I was setting up a new user the same way as above, but when I logged into a Pc as them and was about to set up their email, I noticed in the Section of the All Programs list that is above ACCESSORIES, it lists all users who have Folder Redirection and allows you to go in and view thier Desktop and My Docs documents and o...
