New Remote Office

Hi all,

One of my clients has had their SBS 2003 box installed and running for the
last 3 years with no problems. They are now opening a new branch office a few
miles away. Is there a 'best practice' setup for this ? I'm in 2 minds of
just a straight forward IPSec VPN and a Terminal Server. There will be 7
users in the remote office using XP Pro, Vista Business and Win 7 Pro boxes
Can anyone point me in the right direction on this ? Many thanks in advance.

Regards Colin.

Colin:

This all depends on what the remote office users expect to do in relation
to SBS. If they are going to spend their entire time attached to the TS,
you may as well get them thin clients.

If they are going to work locally, with only an occasional need to see something
on or from the SBS, it is a different matter. Exchange and Outlook work
very well over RPC, so you can have them connected to the exchange server
with no vpn, and there is no need, really, for a local DC and GC box.

If they have occasional need for files from the sbs, then two robust firewall
appliances that do VPN's will create the tunnel and no need for software
VPN's of the MS type which can quickly eat up the bandwidth between offices,
as they are only capable of dividing up the lowest number, usually the upload
from the remote office.

So, the answer to your question is there is no best practice in the general
sense... it depends on usage patterns and customer / user expectations.

What are the business requirements for the remote office?

VPN + additional Win 2008 Std domain controller/global catalog would
work for basic Active Directory functionality.

How do terminal services factor into this in your mind?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.
The remote users need access to their email/exchange (which could be
accomplished by RPC/HTTP) and files stored on the SBS box - word, excel,
pdf's, pretty basic requirements. My thought for the TS box was to get each
user to use TS and that way have all network access to files stored on the
server at the main office etc via RWW, limiting the amount of data needed to
be transferred across a VPN. The only other requirement here is printing to
local printers.

Regards Colin.

Well, if you do it that way, then you don't even really need VPN for
remote users. TS connection can use its own encryption.

Additionally, I'd host the documents in a Sharepoint site so you can
access them directly from Office applications.

You can enjoy the ability to print to local printers over RDP, assuming
they are not not the consumer inkjets that barely work even locally.

Tip for TS printing: I have yet to see a laser printer that won't work
with an HP 4M printer driver. Discovered this when Dell shipped some
early laser printers with "customized" drivers that disabled network
sharing. If you have issues with printing to local laser printers,
create a copy of the printer and configure it with HP 4M drivers.

If this is site-to-site VPN, you may not even need a dedicated DC at the
remote site as long as the DNS settings are set to point to that DC.
However, that slows down local web browsing for users as all DNS
requests would have to traverse the VPN link.

Hi Leonid,

Once again, thanks for the (very speedy) reply.
As only 4 out of the 7 users will need access to files (the other 3 rely
only on email), I think I'll configure a site to site VPN in the first
instance. If that proves to be too slow I can install the TS box and/or the
additional DC and take it from there. Thanks for your advice and I appreciate
the HP 4M tip - one to bear in mind for the future.

Regards Colin.
