Issue with Windows 2008 Joining Windows 2003 Domain

Greetings,
I have an Active Directory domain with two Windows Server 2003 32-bit
machines as the domain contrallers (DC's).

Right now, I'd like to order a new Windows Server 2008 64-bit machine to
join to this domain as a third DC.

Is there any known issue with domain controllers mixed with Win2003 and
Win2008?
Is there any known issue with domain controllers mixed with 32-bit and
64-bit?
Do I need to do some preparation for the mixed environment?

Any info would be appreciated,
Ross

No.

No.

Yes. You'll have to run adprep32 from the Server 2008 DVD in order to
prepare the directory's schema for the new OS level. You can use your
favorite search engine for
adprep /domainprep
adprep /forestprep

Since you have 32bit systems, you'll have to run the 32bit version of
adprep on the DVD, which is adprep32.

Florian

Hello Ross,

Known issues for mixed DCs, no. Known issues between architectures, no.

If you use Windows server 2008 you have to use a trial version from 2008
32bit architecture, as on the Windows server 2008 64bit media is only the
64bit adprep version included.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc137123.aspx

If you use Windows server 2008 R2 you have to run the adprep32.exe from the
disk, this one includes both version, 64bit is adprep.exe.

Thank you, Florian and Meinolf!

So, I guess what I should do is ...
1) Put the Win2008 R2 CD to the first DC machine which is the schema master,
and run:
   adprep32 /domainprep
   adprep32 /forestprep
2) put the Win2008 R2 CD to the second DC machine, and run:
   adprep32 /domainprep
   adprep32 /forestprep
3) Install Win2008 R2 64-bit to the new machine, and run dcpromo to join to
the exisiting domain as a third DC.

Is it correct?
Thanks again,
Ross

Yeah, except that it is enough to run adprep /domainprep and /forestprep
a single time -- preferrably on the Schema Master/Infrastructure Master.
You can skip step 2) there.

One more question ...
Will there be any issue with Windows CAL's?

All my current CAL's are for Windows 2003.
For a mixed Win2003 and Win2008 environment, will the CAL's still be
working?
Thanks,
Ross

Not really. But if you view your messages using the preview pane rather than opening the message in its own window then you won't have the message window to close. Hope this helps! bill -- William M. I have somehow managed to make a mess of how my windows are displayed in VB. Windows 7 Keeps chanting date time

When I go and synchronize my clock from the internet, any of the servers will give me the correct local time, but after a few minutes windows 7 will change the time to 3 hours before. Yes, always 3 hours exactly. Since my local time is about 1 hour in front of New York, 3 hours should be somewhere in US pacific time. I tried to leave the wrong time for 2 days, but the clock change wasn't recursive. In other words, once the clock is rolled back, it will remain 3 hour...

Outlook issues after Exchange migration
We recently migrated Exchange 5.5 mailboxes to Exchange 2003 on a new domain. This was performed with the exmerge utility in a 2 step process. Now there are 2 issues with Oulook: 1) When a user types a recipient name into the address field, the name autocompletes as normal. But when the mail is sent, a message returns saying it is undeliverable. However, if the user goes into the Contacts folder and from there selects the same user to send a message to, it is successful. 2) If a user shares a calendar, specifying the user with whom to share and the level of permissions, all users in ...

multiple instance of CRM on domain
We have a situation where two divisions want seperate instances of CRM. It is important to note, each division has it's own domain. While I know we can manage that, my question concerns the exchange router. Since the email for both divisions come through the same exchange server (and through a third domain), my assumption is there would only be one exchange router.
