Optional Nttp Server - Please Read and Respond

Just trying to gage some interest...

Some of you may recall a few years ago Msft did away with the MSN news servre(msnnews) and myself and a few others Msn folks migrated over to a private server(AnnexCafe) to keep the group intact. That group eventually evolved in time into a user to user technical support group covering a diverse area for Q and A on all things Windows or related.

I've investigated the ability to create a Windows Live Mail nntp newsgroup on that same private Nttp server(username/pw required, and its own TOS)...

How many of you might be interested ?

Winston

I for one (even though I am not using WLM) would. I am constantly lurking here and
learning all the time and this way I am able to help out users with WLM on other
servers when they post about issues (Mainly foreign)

Also this newsgroup as it stands now(public.windows.live.mail.desktop) is already
running on the alt.aioe.org servers

The MS forums are poorly designed and not working (buggy).
Even worse, they are split by country/language. If you look for a
problem/solutions and you are from Germany (like me) you get automatically
stuffed into the german part -which contains almost zero useful posts. NG
have always been english/international, only a very few are localized and
most never kicked of.
Yes I am interested to keep at least 1 NG alive with windows live whatsoever
topics.

Hurry guys......lets join Winston. Monika (sorry

Hi, Winston.

Sure, I'm interested!

As I you know (but others may not), this NG is already mirrored on Usenet.
I'm now doing my own "mirror" by subscribing both here and there (via my
ISP). This week I'm reading the same messages twice, but next week I'll
still be reading messages there - I hope - even though "here" will have
disappeared.

(Private message: Please put "nntp" and "NNTP" into your spellchecker so
that it will correct references to "nttp". <g> YOU know that it's Network
News Transfer Protocol - but many users may not, and their searches for
"nntp" may come up empty or with some good resources omitted.)

Yes. Html and Attachments would be permissible. Message size limitation =
is always a concern. Even though the Annex Caf=E9, a free server, having =
a very liberal size limitation(iirc 500kb), it=92s always best to use =
attachments and signatures with discretion in the technical groups.

This would not be a group for use of and posting stationery.....a group =

Ooo, I hope you're asking Winston.
I subscribed to Annex cafe a few years ago (for their graphics groups), so
no problem.
I vaguely remember you have to sign in (this avoids unpleasant people
joining in the fun).

I am sure Winston will explain all :-)

I've never used this, "AnnexCafe" for anything.

These groups likely will continue to exist on the public NNTP servers which
are still up and running. But there will probably be no incentives for those
with MVP to use any private NNTP service any more than to continue using the
public NNTP service groups. As long as MS is not officially connected with
the NNTP groups, interest will probably fade away.

Yes. Html and Attachments are permissible on the Annex Cafe. Message size limitation is always a concern. Even though the Annex Caf, a free server, having a very liberal size limitation(iirc 500kb), its always best to use attachments and signatures with discretion in the technical groups.

This is not be a group for use of and posting stationery(now excluded from WLM) besides a group for those so inclined already exists on the server with knowledgeable long time users.

Having already received positive feedback from current AnnexCafe users and a cross section here....the group is already setup.

I believe there is room for this.
Both Eternal September and Aioe (servers carrying this soon to be defunct group) have their own limitations.

The Annex Caf provides opportunities to aid in problem solving that are normally frowned upon or not available in Usenet flavored/based nntp groups. Two of those are immediately notable.
1. HTML postings
- Let's face it...WLM is first an Html client with an option to use plain text
- This WLM group(on msnews) has numerous posts using Html

2. Larger Message size capability (including attachments)

Everyone will have to make up their own mind. I'm pretty confident that many(like others who have migrated from other Usenet servers) will find the Annex worth their time.

RC.,
If everything goes as planned...this group will be gone as well as the community web UI/CDO. Most of the other groups have disappeared from both locations(there is one awkward exception...the WLMsgr group is gone from this server, yet the group name [but no posts] were still present in the web UI)

The WLM group on the Annex Caf is already setup(look for a new thread 'Optional Nntp WLM Newsgroup' with the details).

I received a fair amount of support from folks on the AnnexCafe community expressing interest to do so even if users here decided to continue with the Usenet groups on Aioe.org/Eternal September. It provides a few features that Usenet doesn't(Moderated, Html permitted, larger message size).

As an old MSN'er Html never bothered me...it was permitted in the old msnnews groups. Also with WLM being more Html focused(for integration with other WLE apps, SkyDrive, Photo Email)) than plain text it just makes more sense to provide that capability vs. the old guard plain text approach on Usenet. Having spent almost a decade in the Annex Caf's User2User technical group its never been a problem or abused.

Larger message size(500 kb) comes in handy for problem resolution when attachments or inserted pic provide more clarity than might be capable form some users explaining in plain text. Likewise, folks imo, can take advantage of the option without abusing the privilege.

And thank you..I checked my spell checker...I found I had previously ok'd the mispelled nttp as 'good'. Now corrected. Thanks again for noticing!!

Msnnews ceased to exist about 10 yrs ago.
http://news.cnet.com/2100-1023-237194.html

MSN groups(not nntp) were discontinued in 2009

I recognize that everyone will migrate to whatever format meets their personal preference.
As far as MVP's go we still have the opportunity to post in the WLSC just like the regular public.
Having received a fair amount of interest from existing Annex Caf people interested in WLMail(and folks I've know for at least a decade...The Annex existence was founded on the that same MSN msnnews server being deprecated 10 years ago) rather than continue to tell those folks the WLSC or other nntp servers...it made a lot of sense to allow them to remain on their own playground.

Actually, that happened only a few months ago.

RMS matrix attribute option
Adding an existing item in the RMS 2.0.0114 matrix with 219 attributes and 826 items and saving it takes about 2 hours to complete (using Windows XP SP2 Pentium D 3.0 Ghz with 2 G RAM). Since the backend is SQL Server, we don’t see any reason for the application not to support matrix records of this size, considering that the Item has 219 attributes and 826 items only. I think it would be better if RMS has the option not to load the existing attributes for the dropdown list. Just enable the addition of new dimensions. ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Micro...

Insert options
I've recently been "upgraded" to Office 2010 from Office 2003 and find the "Ribbon" interface really horrible. A good example is in Excel. In Excel 2003 if I wanted to insert a row or column it was simple. Go to the insert menu and select either rows or columns.
