Im talking about VS.net 2003, i bought it a while ago and uninstalled it
because its far too unusable.

Im not using VS.net 2002 which is more stable, but still very buggy.

I would disagree with u. As for IDE is could be unstable of course .
As for C++ language compiler - VC++ 7.1 (2003)
much more conforms to C++ language standard than VC 7.0.

The IDE is all over the place, it cant even do simple things such as
remember where i docked my toolbars on app exit !

2002 is better, and is staying on my system until 2003 if fixed.

Eh. Go with the Intel compiler if you have the money. Integrates nicely
into the IDE and it is the best compiler out there right now.

Define "unusable". Certainly the GUI sucks, representing an amateur hack job on an
interface (one done without any consideration of the problem domain, done by someone who
doesn't understand user interfaces). But I've not experienced any bugs, although I only
use it for two projects right now (both of which require VS7 features not available on
VS6). But MFC is substantially improved, and the compiler is excellent. You just can't get
at them humanely.

Note to Microsoft: the contracts I get now explicitly state that "Work will be done in
Visual Studio 6". Nobody wants to move to VS7. My stock contract says "In the latest
version of Visual Studio", and that is no longer acceptable to people who need to get real
work done. They attach an addendum state explicitly that only VS6 will be used for
development.

Is anyone at Microsoft getting this message? This is a product that is being seriously
rejected by the marketplace! (Even the project I'm using VS7 for is a pain; the client
ranted at me for several hours a couple weeks ago about forcing them to move to such an
abysmal environment, just so we could use features that should have been made available in
a VS6-compatible library, so the programmer-hostile GUI would not have to be used! And
this is a client that is essentially a non-Microsoft shop, and has little experience with
VS6. They instantly recognize VS6 to be superior to VS7 in its UI design, and that says a
lot)

I speculate the new VS was designed by people who don't actually _use_ it,
and maybe have never used VC6.

When I tried VS7, my first reaction was
"WTF... was this IDE written in Java???"

some people have accepted it, many of them managers and marketing people.
again, they don't actually have to use it. as MS sometimes refers to
VS7.x as the latest technology, some people think they can claim their apps
are state-of-the-art if they simply write it in with the latest VS.
mgrs of course can demand that employees use such-and-such a tool.

Visual C++ versus Visual Basic
Hello, I am aware that this is not a very appropriate place for my questions, but I don't know any other more appropriate place. I have been programming for last 20 years, using Basic, Pascal, Fortran and C++. Of these I liked mostly C++. I usually learned languages by using language interpreter help. Only recently I had to go Visual. I started with Visual Basic for a easy introduction and despite minor starting problems (being Visual means conceptually different) I am now fluent in Visual Basic too. Can my MFC Regular DLL run in C++ and Visual Basic?

But when I try to run the DLL using Visual Basic I get a 'Bad calling convention' error. Apparently, this can be solved by adding _stdcall to the exported functions. Going from Visual Studio 6.0 to Visual Studio 2003
Hi all, My main interest in Visual Studio is using MFC with C++. I'd like to go from VS 6.0 to VS 2003, but I feel like a fish out of water with VS 2003. The interface is remarkably different and much less intuitive than VS 6.0. Are there any online resources to help people make the transition from 6.0 to 2003?
