the rc editor changes some contents without my consent when .rc files saved

Hi,

My colleagues and I are using VS 2005. After I make some minor changes
to a .rc file (obtained from my colleagues) and save it, the compiler
greatly changes the .rc in addition to my minor changes. For example,
the following 2 lines

IDD_DLG_MODELIST DIALOG DISCARDABLE 0, 0, 270, 149
STYLE DS_MODALFRAME | WS_POPUP | WS_CAPTION | WS_SYSMENU

become

IDD_DLG_MODELIST DIALOG 0, 0, 270, 149
STYLE DS_SETFONT | DS_MODALFRAME | WS_POPUP | WS_CAPTION | WS_SYSMENU

Or the following 2 lines become one line:

COMBOBOX IDC_POSTDLG_COMBO_UNITS,165,5,49,49,CBS_DROPDOWNLIST |
     WS_VSCROLL | WS_TABSTOP

The changes don't do any harm. However, it causes lots of inconvenience
to code comparison (using windiff or winmerge) because my minor,
relevant changes are embedded in a sea of irrelevant changes in windiff.
What should my colleagues and I do to make our VS 2005's have
consistent setups to avoid this situation? Your help is much appreciated.

Annoying isn't it!

I don't think there's anything you can do - at least nothing I'm aware
of.

The attribute DISCARDABLE is meaningless noise and has always been meaningless noise in
Win32. So someone finally decided to nuke it.

It added DS_SETFONT. Did you have a font selected in the Properties?

While this does cause problems with differential comparisons, it also points out why
line-oriented comparison programs are rather crude tools.

There's nothing I know of that will change this. The resource compiler is free to write
anything it wants into the .rc file. Compatibility with older versions of Visual Studio
is not supported.

You could make a WinMerge plug-in that handles noise in rc files :)

Hello Jihajlo,

Did you mean that I can download a plug-in for WinMerge to handle this
situation? Could you be more specific, for example, the name of the
plug-in? Thanks for any further help.

I've suggested that you create (make) one yourself. Since that could
turn out to be a difficult task I've added a smiley. I don't know of any
such plugin, but Google could add more to the subject, not only about
WinMerge plugins but other comparison tools as well, both free and
commercial.
