Exit Outlook. Then you aren't connected (actually you are only
connected when mail polls occur).

Don't save a password in the account defined in Outlook. Then if, for
some reason, you decide to share a Windows login with someone else (but
obviously giving them their own account would be far more secure,
especially to your private data), they still wouldn't know the password
to connect to your mail server - unless, because you let them share your
account or give them an admin account, they install a keylogger to
capture your keystrokes to enter the password that you will get prompted
to enter each time for the first mail poll in an Outlook session.

The mail server will require your login credentials. Your e-mail client
does not stay continuous connected but instead periodically polls for
new mails or you you perform a manual mail poll, and each time it
connects in a mail poll then it must send the login credentials. If you
are afraid of someone sniffing your network traffic then use a mail
server that provides for SSL connects (securely encrypted). This would
establish an SSL connect between you and the mail server so your login
credentials are encrypted. Otherwise, your login credentials get sent
as plain text.

Even if your mail provider provides SSL connects to their mail server,
that is only used for the login. The mail via the DATA command is still
sent as plain text. If you want to also protect your messages then get
a mail security certificate to encrypt your messages. Well, to be
accurate, you need the recipient's public key for their mail certificate
so you can encrypt your message and only they with their private key can
decrypt it. You encrypt your message using their public key. Only they
have the private key to decrypt it. Likewise, if you want them to send
you encrypted mails, you will need to send them a mail with your
security certificate (just the public key portion) so they can encrypt
using it and only you can decrypt using your private key.

Transaction logs
Hi Guys, I have a client running Server 2000 and exchange 2000 which is located in another city and I don't have remote access. Please excuse me if I'm slightly vague with the information. The server recently crashed and I finally found the problem was the transaction logs have not been purged since 2003! There are 3,500 log files which have added an additional 17GB to the server and caused it to crash. The client is running Veritas Backup Exec and backing up the exchange mailboxes but not the M: drive. There is no option to back up the information store. There does not app...

Multipart / Alternative with Outlook (2000)
Is there any way to send Multipart/Alternative email with Outlook, or do I need to obtain a special program to do this? I've been tinkering around with Outlook 2000 and it doesn't look like it's going to work. Also, is there any way to directly edit the HTML of an outgoing Outlook 2000 message? When I insert the contents of an .htm file, Outlook appears to strip out some of the tags (most notably bgcolor and some text formatting). Thanks, Dave ...

Outlook 2007 clients with Exchange 2003
Is there any issue with this? Does this work? I'm currently testing with a limited group that I upgraded the client to 2007 . Everything seems ok, but... they were all upgrades, what about new additions and permissions and calandering, etc... Just needed to know if they play together nicely or if Exchange 2007 is needed. None and works great. (Office/Outlook 2007 SP2 on XP, Vista, and Windows 7 against Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003 SP2.) "JustSc0tt" <> wrote in message

Outlook keeps asking for profile
Hey, I don't know exactly which newsgroup to put this in, but here I go. We have a custom made program using Sybase SQL as database. It has the option to send/receive replications through email using MS Outlook. The problem is that when the external application creates the email to be send, outlook always shows up with a screen to select the profile to be used. I cannot find anything to stop it from asking that question. There is only 1 profile on the computer, so this cannot be the problem. When it asks for it the first time, I also have tried selecting the "use this as d...
