Money Updates: "Money encountered an error processing the download file ('SMRTINET.ini').

My M04 has not been doing Money Updates (other parts of update are doing so:
quotes, accounts) for a month now. The Call Summary for Money Updates says
Money encountered an error processing the download file ('SMTINET.INI').
Out of curiosity I looked for such a file name on the computer--none.

We have two accounts on Money. The other account is NOT encountering any
such problem--Money Updates are working fine for it.

No changes for either account of any seeming relevance preceded the loss of
updates on the one account.

Questions:
(1) Does anyone know how to fix this?
(2) These two accounts are presumably both using the same copy of Money.
What do the Money Updates update--the (shared) program or something in the
individual account files?
(3) If Money Updates update the shared program, as the one account seems to
be doing it, that the other account is failing shouldn't matter--right?
(4) Does anyone know what Money Updates actually updates, besides the tax
settings (once a year)?

That would be smrtinet.ini

Try Tools->InternetOptions->DeleteFiles first.

That is referenced in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272940/en-us
but it may not apply.

Yes, within my post (but not the Subject line) I made a typo, the download
file name is SMRTINET.INI.

Cal, I presume that you were suggesting deleting the temporary internet
files via IE's Tools-> Internet Options-> Delete Files (under Temporary
Internet files). I do that (or the equivalent) as a matter of course before
shutdown and did it via IE, as per your suggestion. But it had no effect.
I also looked at the KB/272940 article, but it suggested running Money
update, which I have been doing. I do not have the referenced internet
security 2000 program.

Any other ideas?

1. You could try doing that explicitly rather than the equivalent.
It may not be any different than the equivalent, but it is easy.
Perhaps you said you did that, but I was not sure.

2. Put the following into your favorite search engines to see
peoples discussions on how to really delete the temporary files that
seem to stick around:
Content.IE5 temporary delete

3. Consider ignoring the message. From what you describe, there may
be no real symptom beyond the message itself.

4. Consider Microsoft Money 2007 Deluxe.

Yes I did try deleting the Temporary Internet files via IE Tools (in
addition to my regular Norton cleanup). Do you know if Money creates any
temp files associated with downloads? And the name of any such file(s)?

In effect, I am "ignoring" the download error, as everything seems to be
working, except the Money Update downloads. Funny that my wife's account is
able to process the Money Updates (as we share the same M04 Dlx program).

Does anyone know if the Money Updates are limited to affecting the
individual Money account files, or if they change the underlying program
files? If the later, I may be getting the benefit of my wife's successful
Money Updates.

Thanks for trying, Cal.

yes: yes.

No. I could figure it out if it mattered to me. You could figure it
out if you looked thru the content.ie5 folder that the search I had
suggested would have given you info on.

There are files that are downloaded that affect more than the Money
file being download. E.g., the list of financial institutions.

For about 2 1/2 months I was getting the error mentioned below without being
able to figure out how to fix it or what may have caused it--see thread.
Today (8/02/06) I login to Money and the first thing that I see is an ad for
2007, which I dismiss. After updating some accounts, I run the update
request (which includes requesting update to Money itself--that had had the
error), and low and behold Money is updated without error!! Very weird.

I have a program that needs to write to several files right before it terminates. I have just noticed that when the program is killed by a system shutdown, these files don't get written. Can anyone give me their opinion as to how to get around this problem? Much appreciated. It depends on how your program is "killed". One way to take care of the problem is to write the files out periodically (every seconds if they have changed).
