How do I get rid of the overwriting function?

Every time i write and try to go back and correct something, it re-writes 
everything i've done

Try pressing the insert key once.  It acts as a toggle to turn on or off the 
overtype mode.

If you are using Word 2007, the Insert key does not toggle Overtype mode. To
restore the behavior of previous versions: Click the Office button, and then
click Word Options. In the Advanced category, select "Use the Insert key to
control overtype mode." Click OK.
