Disable all the addins and see if that fixes things. If so, reactivate them
again one by one to find the one causing the behaviour.

Office button => Word Options => Add-Ins => Go button at the bottom (make
sure to go over the different options in the dropdown list next to the
button).

The first thing I would try is to start Word with the /a switch and see if
if closes normally. To start with the /a switch, click Windows' start
button, type winword /a, and press Enter.

If Word now closes normally, then try opening Word normally and see if the
problem is resolved.

If not, the usual suspects are:

1. Corrupted Normal.dotm file. Try renaming or deleting this file--Word will
create a new one automatically. In Windows 7, it usually would be found
here: C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

2. Corrupted Data key in the registry. Try deleting the Data key. Word will
create a new one automatically. In Word 2007, it's here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

In theory, the automatic fix should have done this for you.

3. Misbehaving add-in. Start Word as administrator, and disable all add-ins.
Close Word, then restart Word, and see if it now closes normally. If it
does, then re-enable add-ins one at a time to see if the problem is
associated with a particular add-in.
