Incompatability while ripping or copying CD's
While 'starting out' transferring all my records and tapes to CD, I had a CD
recorder. I have however found, that while copying my CD's to an external
hard drive, that the process stops before the ripping process finishes. On
my laptop, I am greeted with the CD making a sort of wirling noise.
Meanwhile, my PC thinks it's an incompatibility issue.
Now for the ironic bit. My CD's don't seem to be affected.* Otherwise they
would not play properly on my Hi Fi CD Player.
Meanwhile, any feedback in relation to the above would remain helpful. I'd
like to know why the ripping or

multi-GB USB FOB CHKDISK ERRORS
I occassionally experience chkdisk errors on multigigabyte USB fobs. I
recently discovered one by running CLAMWIN antivirus. Is this an effective
way to test the integrity of a fob? How can I be sure when I copy a huge
number of small files, mostly plain text, but also lately scanned PDF, that
they were successfully copied or backed up? It is possible my USB experience
is from removing the fob "unsafely" or by simultaneously copying multiple
directories, but I had not had such an expereince before this fall, when I
started using the larger USB fobs.

Keyboard latency in google with firefox
Greets all:
I can=92t correlate this with any recent changes. There is annoying

when I type into the search box. I can see from my firewall icon that
it is only when firefox is accessing the internet (Comcast cable

What I=92d really like to do is have my keyboard be the absolute highest

The normal default for the [Start] menu = \Start Menu\Programs
So where in the WinXP Registry is this *default* locate?
I also note the same applies to the program folder default =

Where is this default located in the Registry?

File Sharing Timeout Setting?
It appears that remote file reads on successive machines
work okay if no files have been read recently, but start
failing (requiring waiting and retrying) if there's been
recent activity.
XP Home (so there's a 5 file open limit, or something like
that).
Everything behaves as if the connection stays up longer
the more recently you've accessed a particular machine,
thus worsening the problem.
Is there a "disconnect quickly" parameter somewhere that I can
set to a short time, rather than its being adaptive as it
appears to be?

Restore points
I have Windows XP Home SP3 on my 6 year old computer that has been working
quite well todate. I discovered today that my System Restore program does
not seem to work correctly. When I set my own restore point it works OK but
the restore points it automatically creates itself every day do not work.
What could be wrong with this and how can this be rectified.

IE 8 secondary window problem?
Hi,
Not sure this is the right place to post this question; if not I'd
appreciate a link as to where to do it.
Problem (if it is a problem, well, for me it is a problem!) is that
when I'm on a page in IE 8 and click on something that opens in a
second window (like a news article), the second window is about 1/3
the size of the full window. I have to enlarge it to see the whole
article, video, or whatever. This gets a bit repetitive, and I'd
rather have the second window open to full size but can't figure out
if there's a setting to control it, and if so, which one.

I would like to make it wait a longer time since some impatient users are

CISVC.EXE hogs CPU; is it the same as Windows Search?
I recently reformatted the HD and reinstalled windows XP professional SP 3.
It hasn't been right since! One thing is that CISVC.EXE hogs the CPU. I know
how to turn it off, but I don't want to interfere with Windows search, which
I rely on - are CISVC and search the same thing, or not?
If they are the same, then I can't turn CISVC off, so how do I control it?
why is it a problem now, and not before? Since reformatting I have loaded
Norton 360 antivirus, and also installed an external HD. Could these affect
things? There is a very old hotifx reported that CISVC can hog CPU whe

Strange problem with Taskbar
I've run into a strange problem only on my wife's computer. Whenever

the taskbar which is totally unacceptable.

Word 2002 SP3 - Unexpected Problem
RE: Spelling/Grammar,
Up until very recently, when I did a spell check I would get the "reading
levels" as well as all counts upon completion. Now, I get nothing and I
suspect that somehow the "Normal" has been changed unknowingly.
I have tried - Detect and Repair
I have tried - Resetting the options
and nothing is working to bring that (in my case) important information
back.
The actual process of Spell/Grammar check seems to work fine however.
Would someone please guide me as to either how to fix this or where to go to
get the info to do so?

I somehow have managed to lose some games and accessories on my computer. I
don't have the installation disc anymore. I have tried previous suggestions
posted on this site to no avail. I do seem to have spider and wordpad.
pinball has a screen that pops up then goes away. But no paint or calculator,
the things I use most often. Somebody please help me! My daughter is driving
me nuts wanting to use the paint. I have Windows XP.

lost user profiles
I ran a disc defragment and when it was done all of my family's user profiles
were gone except the one I was logged onto. How do I find those profiles and
restore them. They are not in C>Documents and Settings.

no ps/2
I'm trying to use the recovery console, but usb keyboard and mouse won't
work. Keyboard and mouse are loaded at start up, but stop responding after
xp from cd is loaded. I can not use ps/2 as my Gateway has no ps/2
connections.
Need recovery console to fix invalid boot.ini which is preventing computer
from booting (keeps starting over. Loads bios and then invalid boot.ini and
then starts again.)
No mouse or keyboard with Barts PE. Do have with knoppix.
Thanks

Sharing External HDD over a network
I'm running XP SP3 on 3 networked computers. I use an external HDD for
regular backups using Synctoy. The HDD is connected to one desktop by USB;
the desktop is connected to the router by cable the other two wirelessly. I
set the HDD to share over the network, of course, but whenever I switch it
on to do a backup I have to reset the sharing. Is there some way of fixing
the sharing mode? I've tried mapping but it still reverts when switched off.
Suggestions would be welcome.
TIA

excel 2002
Some time ago, I developed an excel 2002 workbook for someone I knew.
Now, the people using it are converting from XP to Win7, and they tell
me the .xls doesn't work. Specifically, it has a commandbutton that
runs some VBA code, which (button) doesn't respond (at all) when they
click on it. They can enter values in cells, etc.
I'm going to go there and look things over. But, meantime, if there's
an "Oh, yeah, all you've gotta do is ...", please feel free to share.
Thanks,
George

Hyperterm
I need to use hyperterm at 7e1 and it keeps reverting to 8n1
as soon as it dials. Why?
Apparently coretel fine transfer needs 7e1. It only works with a
different dialup software from DOS.

Windows XP and New Computer Questions
I wanted to ask a couple questions and ask for your opinions here. My
computer is 7 years old. The processor is slow and the memory has been
upgraded to the limit. I'm considering purchasing a new computer. I'm using
Windows XP Home Edition on this computer. I have heard that it's hard or
impossible to upgrade XP to the new Windows 7. Is that correct? Also, I
have some older programs I use frequently that I'm afraid won't work on
Windows 7. So I'm looking into buying a computer (used if I have to) that
has Windows XP.
This is probably a dumb question. Is there a way t

XP repeatedly installing updates
Hi
I have a problem with Windows XP Home Edition.
Every time I shut down it installs updates.
I am pretty sure it is installing the same updates over and over.
I have noticed that whenever I shut down there is an updates icon attached
to the red
Turn-off button.
In the Liveupdates box, available from control panel, I have unticked
automatic and
chosen the 'inform me when updates are available' but it doesn't. It still
downloads them regardless.
I would be grateful for any help or advice.

Cannot save Passwords problem
Hello.
Having problems with saved passwords.
Outlook 2003 and IE8 wouldn't save passwords.
I have tried the following without success:
kb en us 290684
Reverting to IE7
I loaded Google Chrome and it wont save either.
Any further ideas? Would creating a new user be an option?
Thanks

I installed 7, now trying to install xp as a dual boot. I need to install
SATA drivers via F6 during the XP install through Floopy Drive A. The
problem is - I have no floppy drive. Do I have to go buy and install one? Is
there a way around this?
Now here is a weird side note....My Win 7 device manager says I DO have
a floppy drive and its working properly, also "my Computer" shows I have one
also. Whats up with that??
Thanks, Pat

Device Location
I'm running XPHome, SP3, on an IDE machine, cable select.
I've got (I opened the case to be sure, and Windows Explorer reports all
four drive letters/size/type correctly as):
Primary IDE
1) hard drive C, master (end of cable)
2) hard drive D, slave
Secondary IDE
3) DVD-ROM E, master (end of cable)
4) DVD-RW F, slave
In Device Manager, the Primary IDE Channel, Advanced Settings tab shows:
Device 0 (running UDMA 5)
Device 1 (running UDMA 5)
and the Secondary IDE Channel shows:
Device 0 (running UDMA 2)
Device 1 (running UDMA 4)
Here's what I don't understand. Also
