Alt-F4 No Longer Closes Windows
Hi everyone,
Until maybe 2 months ago I could close windows on my system with Alt-
F4, with one exception -- the command prompt. If my task bar was
empty, I could even bring up the Windows Security dialog and shutdown
my system from there. But now Alt-F4 has no effect.
I don't even remember exactly when the issue started. I think the
culprit was an MS update, but searching Microsoft's site turned up
nothing. Can anyone help resolve this issue? Thanks to anyone who does.

Glitch while updating
My daughter's computer was recently doing an update. We were at the point
where the computer was rebooting and had the screen "do not turn off your
computer, updating......" etc. Unfortunately, our ISP went out at that
time, and the computer was left in that limbo for over 24 hours. I finally
just hit the power button to turn it off, and now when we turn it on it is
in a continual loop of rebooting itself. I've tried putting in the Windows
disk and it reads it okay, and will get so far to reinstall, but then it
does the same thing and reboots itself.
I don't know what to t

Why is "Local Settings" folder NOT shown in WinExplorer ?
On one of my computers the folder

The folder exists on both computers. I can verify it through cmdline command

All settings in WinExplorer menu

Yes "Display content of system folders" is enabled.
But on one computer the folder does not appear in WinExplorer.
What is the reason?

Can't resize windows manually
Today I have lost the ability to resize windows manually, every IE8, email
and program windows. If I moved the mouse pointer to the corner of a window
I could resize it manually. Now any window just appears maximised and if I
click minimised it just reduces to the task bar until I click maximise
again. If I move down the screen I can resize the taskbar but nothing else.
I have googled which wasn't much help and was generally about resizing
partitions. As far as I am aware I haven't changed any settings.
Does anyone have any solutions please?
Many thanks

Task manager Processes stay running
I have a question about programs staying in the Task Manager Processes after
they have been closed out.
I know that I can right click and end processes manually and have as few

The scenario I'm referring to is for example: I open Internet Explorer,
surf the web, & close out via the X. The iexplore.exe keeps running (not
using CPU resources just memory) after it has been closed out. The same
thing happens when I used Kodak Easy Share. Does anyone know how to stop the
programs when they have been closed out? Some progra

No early system restore points
I've had an EeePC netbook with Win XP Home SP3 for just over 2 years. A
long time ago, hibernate stopped working -- I was told to do a system
restore, but that never happened as I was then only using it
intermittently. Now that I'm using it more regularly, hibernate still
does not work and the computer is gradually but inexorably slowing down,
to the point that it is now very frustrating to use.
Is System Restore likely to provide a solution? Why do I not seem to
have any System Restore points that are older than 3 months?

Fueling your car with natural gas from home
Dear Everyone,
as you know the price of the Oil is more and more increasing, while
the oil supply is decreasing. Moreover Oil is
causing wars, terror, oil spills, a lot of greenhouse gases. Do you
know that there is plenty of natural gas ? The
supply will last for many decades, probably for hundred years. A lot
of methane (natural gas) is found as shale gas,
a lot more will come from methane hidrates. Natural gas is causing
much less greenhouse gases and since it is found
locally, it will not cause any wars or terror. It will create jobs in
your own country and not in the middle east

What is a '10 File' or a '7 File'?
Can anybody tell me what a '10 file' or '7 file' format is? This has
started recently. It usually happens when I try to save a file to the

file, I can't find it using a word processor or CopyWriter. I'm

When I look using Windows Explorer, the file is there but the file
format is '10 file' or '7 file'. Windows is unable to open this format.
What's going on here? Is this fixable? Appreciate your help.

Windows Wireless Wizard Cannot Find any Networks
It's a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP Professional and I use a PCMCIA
wireless adapter to connect it to the router. This has worked perfectly for
years but suddenly there's a problem.
The wireless adapter comes with its own management utility which includes
the option to let the utility or Windows manage the wireless connection. If I
let the utility do it then it detects and connects to the network and a
connected and firewalled connection appears in Network Connections. The
wireless connection wizard, however, fails to find any network and no
programs on the computer can

XP Install
I'm going to do a major upgrade (Processor, Vid Card, RAM) along with an initial install of XP where a Linux distro now resides. Could someone provide a link giving me the process I should follow to successfully complete the upgrade ??

Start Up Problem
I'm using XP home SP3
When I start the computer it gets to the Windows XP screen and shuts down.
When I restart I get a range of options including start normally, start
using last known working configuration and starting in safe mode.
The first two usually cause a repeat of the problem though sometimes it
starts normally.
Starting in safe mode then restarting the computer seems to work every time.
Going back to a system restore point before the problem occurred just
produces a message that the system cannot be restored.
I thought about re-installing windows but when I found my

Eject (button and command) fails on both optical drives (CD & DVD) under XP. Works fine under Linux and pre XP starting
Both my drives (G: & H:) are fine and work perfectly once disks are
loaded but I can no longer change disks while operating XP.
I have to re-start XP and change the disks before XP starts..
They work perfectly under Linux (Mint8) although that is no longer
installed and I've recently tested using the LIVE CD
I've today disabled all start-up programs, re-booted and killed some
processes that might be causing a problem but to no avail.. This has
been happening for at least six months so I suspect some update at some
has caused the problem.. The machine is fully up to date and

Paging File
I just installed an additional 2gis of ram for a total of 3gigs on an xp pro machine. I have two HDs and have the paging file on the second (non-booting) drive.
I went to check the paging file and found that the "Recommended" size was 4606megs, but
the "Allocated" was 3071megs. The file is set for "System Managed Size"
Why is there a difference between the "Recommended" and "Allocated" amount ??
Which number should I use if changing to a "Custom" setting ??
Thank you for your time and trouble.

Does Windows store a list of installed updates?
Hi,
I am going to be fitting a larger drive to my PC and am going to be
taking the opportunity to do a clean install. I have the Windows XP home
CD with SP2 included and I will need to know which updates to download
so that I can slipstream a CD/DVD with all the necessary up-to-date
drivers. Does Windows store a list of the updates and if so, where?
Many thanks
Gerald

Why suddenly is British daylight saving time not being applied?
Suddenly today I noticed that my PC clock is wrong and running an hour fast
and upon investigation it appears that the daylight saving time which should
be being applied for my time zone, namely -
(GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
is not now being applied even though I changed nothing and the option
[tick] Automatically adjust clock for saving changes
is still ticked. At this time of the year (April to October) British clocks
are put one hour forward, to GMT+1 or "British Summer Time" and usually
Windows XP knows when that is, and normally display
