Power Management on a Laptop.

Of course, I have a laptop running XP SP3. A Dell Inspiron 6000. I'm watching the temp on the CPU go up/down as I use the unit and the cpu switches from 1.32 Ghz to 2 Ghz. Obviously cooling off at the slower speed. All this is fine. My question is, the HD heats up too. And I've tried setting the power scheme to shutdown the drive after 3 minutes when on batteries. However watching the HD light, it never stops blinking for more than 30 seconds, okay maybe 1 minute. So if there is constant (in my terms) activity on the HD, how will it ever spin down? DVD stuttering

I've begun playing DVD movies on my WinXP laptop with VLC Media Player. Today, a brand new DVD kept "stuttering" all the way through. That is, both video and sound would completely stop and then, after a few seconds, resume. I thought the DVD was bad--but I played it on my WinXP desktop computer with the same media player, and it seemed to run mostly OK (although there were some places where I sensed very slight hesitations). Could it be a marginal DVD? And if so, is there a way of making it work better? (It's a DVD I bought a couple months ago, so I'm not sure I can return it

Back up question...

Hello... I am in search of advice in terms of back up software for our home. We have 2 pc's running XP, a laptop (wireless) running XP, and another laptop (wireless) running Vista. I have a SimpleTech external hard drive, USB, connected to my PC, with 4 folders, one for each of the PC's.. (eg: Vin, wife, kid1, kid2) Any suggestions on automatic back up software? I've been doing each unit manually... it's not a good idea, we tend to forget...free would help very much as well. Thoughts on Comodo? Hinxsoft? -- Thanks & B'rgds, Uncle Vinnie

Port replicator screws up num lock

I unhooked my laptop (Dell Inspiron 730) from all peripherals, electricity and internet and worked on it for a while. When I hooked it back up I found that when I typed numbers I got ! for 1 and $ for 4, etc. I played around a lot with num lock, function/num lock, caps lock, etc., etc. I finally detemined that if I booted without the port replicator (Targus) plugged in, I got the numbers OK, but if I plugged in the port replicator I immediately got the problem, even when no peripherals were plugged into the port replicator. Battery life in cordless keyboards and mice.

Hello All! This is a typical description of a Logitech product:"The Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave Pro Keyboard all you have to do is connect it via a USB port. Hello All! My machine runs XP but has only two USB 2.0 ports. Some of the hardware that I have will function quite well on one of the two USB 1.0 ports but really, I think I need about 6 USB ports. help "COM1 in use" problem

How can I tell what has grabbed a com port. I try to connect to COM1 but am told it is in use, but I haven't intentionally connected any thing to it. My boot.ini has the /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn options so nothing should be causing a problem at boot. This is a remote machine and I do have a COM1 serial connection that could be trying to send data at boot, but the /fastdetect should prevent that from being seen. I need help!

Okay i just recently bought a use laptop. I've only had it for a month at the most and well its doing something i've never seen before and i would really like to know why this would be happening. I recently discoverd that when the laptop has been on for more then 2 hours that it will seize up and the only way you can get it to finish loading or thinking is to tip it sideways. At first i thought maybe it was because it got hot or something. But then i realized it wouldnt overheat with both the fans still working perfectly. So if anyone knows why i would have to turn it sidewa

Need advice to troubleshoot a computer

My parent's computer has stopped working. It is on, but is not doing anything (the monitor is not receiving a signal). It will not reboot or even shut down via the buttons on the front. I need to figure out what the problem is and whether it is fixable. I was planning to redo their hard drive soon as it was orginally partitioned into 4 sections of 10GB each and the C drive is basically full while the other drives are not. I have already transferred as much as possible to the other drives, but it is now full, mostly with windows files and things i am not sure I can move. My plan was

Change driver of network printer on local machine?

We have a bunch of computers in the office which connect to a Win2003SBS. We have two Brother laser printers on our network. Is it possible for my computer to use a different printer driver for one of the printers or would I need our network consultant to login to the server and change the driver? The reason I ask is because there's two types of drivers.. PCL and BR-SCRIPT. The PCL offers more features. I'd like to start taking advantage of them. One of the features is a macro feature, which can store stuff in the printer memory, such as a letterhead you use often, so whe

Is this CD player defective? Cannot access blank CDs (only)

I can use music and software installation CDs just fine on my Dell laptop using an optical CD RW drive. I used to be able to burn blank CDs. But now when I insert a blank CD I get the following symptoms: It shows zero bytes available. When I click on the "D:\" icon (in My Computer) a popup (dialog box) shows "D:\ is not accessible", AFTER FOUR YEARS HAS MY CD PLAYER BECOME DEFECTIVE. Here's what I have tried. 1) Three different blank CDs 2) Reinstalled the driver 3) Cleaned the optical reader 4) Checked the "Drive Type" setting with REGEDIT It is puzzling that I can

Please insert a disk into removable drive

I've just bought a portable hard drive and i comes up with the error "please insert a disk into removable drive". I've tried changing the drive name from 'F:' to other letters and nothing works. I've tried uninstalling via device manager and reinstalling. I've tried searching for driver updates. None of these works. Can anyone please help? Thanks.
