Enable / disable hardware at startup
I've got a wireless network adaptor that blue screens Windows XP SP3 if it
is enabled at startup. If I start up in Safe Mode, disable the device, then
restart normally, then re-enble the device it works fine.
Is there any way to start the device off disabled, maybe run a batch file to
enable it after a minute or so once Windows is fully booted and stable, then
disable it again just as I shut down the computer?
I know you can write a batch file to start/stop services, so maybe there is
something like this as well?
Many thanks,

Getting Compaq to Boot With 4 Gig Memory
We have a Compaq W8000 workstation with 4 GB of memory installed.
Unfortunately Windows can only retrieve and use about 3.61 GB of that. It
looks like the BIOS of various cards might be locking up part of the first
640 KB of memory? Can anyone give some advice on how to get Windows to
get use of the full 4GB of memory?

WebCam problems
Hello
I run XP PRO + SP3.
Over the years I bought three webcams but each time I move to a faster
Window operating system, my cams become obsolete as I can't get an update

The last one I bought is an expensive INTEL with many bells and whistles + a
large sophisticated program ro run it but this Cam too is going to the bin
for the same reasons, not to mention the obsolete INTEL program left on my
HDD.
I want to download one of the free available Camera programs and use it with

so one USB port not equal to other USB port
I have been having trouble with one of my USB hard disks.
It worked for some time, but not reliably.
In practice it randomly dismounted while copying files (and also when not
copying).
After that I had to pull the power plug and reinsert it to make the drive
mount again.
Yesterday this happened again, I got annoyed and, since the drive is still
under a few monthes warranty, I decided to call Medion support.
This guy advised to try it on another USB port.
Initially I was sceptical but nevertheles I gave it a try. Guess what? The
troublesome drive now seems to work like a charm!

Computer Monitor
Folks:
Recently I bought a new Acer B203W flat screen monitor. It came with the
usual CD containing drivers, etc.
With my Windows 2000 platform, I can set the screen pixel level to (1280 x

However, with Windows XP, if I try to use the (1280 x 1024) pixel level, the
screen goes blank for a while then it switches back
to the (1024 x 768) setting..
* Why is this the case ?
* Should I install drivers that came with the monitor on the XP
platform ?
* How to do this installation ?

I had previous problems in trying to boot Windows and the only way to get

XP wireless utility
Hi.
Friend of mine's network adapter would not work so she bought a wireless
USB. Installed it, and said she got the internet for a few minutes then
nothing. She can't connect.
I had a look and the Utility for the USB is fine and has all the correct
settings, a good signal but no internet.
The weird thing is the Network adaptor does not show in Connections or the
notification task bar, only the LAN wired one.
I tried to use the wireless setup wizard in the control panel but that
stopped when you're meant to choose the drive that the USB is showing, says
error and that's it.

Get drive letter for old slave hard drive while keeping data
Hello,
My master hard disk has failed and I have successfully replaced it with a
new one and reinstalled windows XP etc. Before the crash I had a second slave

it shows up in disk management, but does not get assigned a drive letter. How
can I get windows to assign a drive letter to the drive without formatting it
and losing all of my data?
Both drives are IDE drives, the master is jumpered to cable select and is on
the master cable, the slave seems to have lost its jumper, or never had one,

usb probs with XP
Hi all,
I have a new HP dc7900eC running XP Pro, all current service packs.
When I plug ANY USB memory stick into ANY USB port, it doesn't recognise it,
and when I click on My Computer, the system freezes.
The second I remove it, I get a flash view of the devices, including the

I have removed the hard disk and fitted it to another PC of the same model
which works well. The problem returns, so the problem is in Windows, not the
hardware.
I have performed a BIOS upgrade, and all Windows Service Packs.

I was down at my sisters yesterday for dinner and she has a computer I built
for her about 4 or 5 yrs ago. XP Home edition, Retail-NOT OEM, 100g HD, 25g

Computer boots and and runs fine although junked up with what I consider
totally useless "womans" stuff slowing it down. I freed up 15gig during my
checking.

When booting up my PC the XP banner screen comes up and hangs there.
I posted the msg below on Feb 2 snd. I thank you for your replies.
What I want to further explain my problem is after investigating it,
is that this only happened/s when I go into Windows update and
download/install the 9 critical updates. After restarting as it says
to do that's when the PC hangs. To get my PC up I had to put my
previous backup on and then I was able to use my PC again.
Do any of you have a solution to this? I was thinking of trying to
narrow it down by installing the first 3 updates, restarting to see if
it happens and if there is no problem trying the next 3 etc. e

was able to get it to boot finally, but now, it won't boot at all.
It never even boots to the BIOS. I unplugged everything except the Monitor
and keyboard it still won't boot.
It's not beeping. The fan comes on, and there is a LED that blinks a few
times but then nothing else happens. The monitor says NO SIGNAL.
Does anyone have any ideas what can keep it from booting/rebooting. In the
past, I had to

IRQ conflict
Looks like I'm having a good old fashioned IRQ conflict. Even though
IRQ's are theoretically shareable these days, in practice it may not be
such a hot idea. The problem first occurred after I replaced my
motherboard and processor on one of my systems, a couple of weeks back.
I was getting a BSOD once every couple of days. I've had 5 BSODs so far.
There has been 3 different types of Stop messages: variously involved
the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL (twice), the BAD_POOL_HEADER
(twice), and the UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (once) errors.
Initially, they involved TCPIP.SYS

Need to delete pending MS updates
A friend asked me to help him with his computer.
So I went and started applying the updates to his XP machine.
Well it turns out that he has a VERY small drive and even less memory :-(
I have downloaded some MS updates but there is not enough room to run them
let alone let them just remain on the drive
Where are the pending updates located so I can go and delete them?
Thanks

Replaced laptop hard drive, now XP keeps asking for driver
After having recently replaced a laptop hard drive (IDE) with a larger one,
Windows XP, sp3 keeps asking for a driver upon reboot for the new and larger
Western Digital hard drive. The machine works fine with the new drive,
recognizes the entire 120 GB drive (the old one having been about 40 GB), and
even Device Manager says the device is working properly. There does not seem
to be any hard drive drivers on Western Digital's web site for this 2.5",
120GB, IDE drive. TIA for any help on this one ...

Too much RAM?
Ok, I have asked a similar question before. But my system can apparently take
4 1Mb Ram sticks in 4 slots. I know they are suppose to go in pairs.
What happens if I put in 2mb pieces? I know that XP 32-bit has a limit of
4Gb. From what I was told, in othe posts it seems, they just don't work if it
is too much. It's unrecognized. But I am just making sure.
In my motherboard manual it says 2Gb pieces can work. It lists one company
that has 2Gb pieces that work. I quickly scanned the list though.
On crucial.com, and www.oempcworld.com they say the 4 1Gb sticks. I trust

Extended RAM available when dedicated to your video/graphics card?
Hi. I have learned that a person is able to dedicate a certain amount of RAM
to their video/graphics card.
In 32-bit XP and Vista, there is the apparent 4Gb limit on the RAM that is
recognized (or allocated?).
So my question is: If I were to dedicate all the RAM my graphics card would
take to the graphics card (It's a 512Mb possability), or another card I could
install (we'll say 1Gb capacity for the graphics) would my system have 512 Mb
(or 1Gb) of RAM for the graphics and 3.5Gb (or 3Gb) for the rest of the
processes?
Or would I have 512 Mb for the video card and be able

Ultra DMA mode showing up
Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop with Windows XP MCE 2005 running.
Recently I had to to do an in-place upgrade as I was getting BSOD on trying
to enter safe mode. Everything went on fine without a glitch.
But now I do see a performance hit on my laptop's performance. It takes
longer to boot and hand over cursor control after booting.
After much research, I observed the following:
- In Device Manager, for Primary IDE channel, I have the 'DMA mode, if
available' option set to true. For device 0 it displays available mode as
'Multi-word DMA mode 2' and for device 1 it says 'N

I run Xp pro sp2 and had no problem before, so something is breaking down.
My board is ECS SIS 735 K7S5A system a few years old but has worked great.

RAM Mhz compared to a four digit number?
Hi. I am looking at different RAMS to upgrade and pput in my pc.
On crucial.com it said I can use: "Each memory slot can hold DDR2
PC2-8500,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot".
Some RAM I'v looked at uses MHz. Eg: Buffalo 2GB DDR2 667MHz 240-Pin
Computer Memory.
So, my question is: Can I use the MHz 240-Pin RAM's, or is this a different
kind of chip? Ot has the DDR2 and 240-PinI would assume they are the same but
how do I understand the DDR2 PC2-8500, 6400 or 5300 numbers in MHz. Is there
a conversion?
What is the difference in this situation betwe
