Unable To Access Group Policies - microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Greetings All- And happy holidays... I need to remove the option to install downloaded updates from the shut down options in Windows XP with the Group Policies and unfortunately whenever this is attempted by typing gpedit.msc in the Run command a pop-up box says that Windows cannot find the file gpedit.msc. However the instuctions you provided with the link outline using group policies to edit the options for updates and the whole problem I am encountering is that when attempting to open GP (gpedit.msc) it opens a box telling me that Windows cannot find the gpedit.msc file. Why isn't SP3 installed by now? Computers running WinXP SP2 will NOT be offered any further critical security updates, Automatic Updates will cease to function, and Windows Update website will not be available after 10 July 2010 until SP3 is installed. There are many omissions, by design, in Windows XP Home Edition, and Group Policy is one of them. Does that mean the features are just not there at all or are they just not convenient to get to with some graphical user interface (GPE)? If the Policies section is in the registry, you don't need Group Policy Editor to control things. I do not know if the Policies section in the registry is the same in Home or not, but you can certainly find out. Using regedit on your system, determine if you can navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies If you are successful in locating the Policies section, then determine if this section exists under it: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU That is where your feature of interest is controlled. If you don't see it, how far into Polices can you go? Sometimes you have to add missing pieces by hand. Check your non Pro systems (and check a Pro system if you have one) and report back.
