Problem joining domain
Hello,
I am trying to set up a new laptop and can't join the network domain. This
is Win7 downgraded to WinXP Pro. I don't know if that is significant, but
thought I'd mention it.
Going through the Network Identification wizard, I am asked for the
Username, Password, and Domain Name. It defaults to Administrator, do I
plug in the Network Administrator Password and Network Domain. The next
message box says that Windows can't find a user account for the domain. On
the same message box it asks for a computer name and domain. The new
computer name is there so I type the dom

TWAIN error (TWCC_BUMMER)
Hello,
I'm having a strange problem that has come up on a Windows XP Home
with SP2. It has a TWAIN scanner connected to USB. It comes up with
a TWAIN error (General failure. Source immediately unloaded.) This
error happens when the twain scanning applet is called from another
program. If I run the program at the command line it functions
perfectly. Nothing that I know of has been changed on the computer. I
tried System Restore to go back a few days, but that didn't fix the
problem. It seems to be a Windows issue with the way external
programs are run and the resources available

SOLUTION: copy/move selected shortcut targets to a destination you choose on the fly
Hi All,
I was searching all over in relation to this question. I would have
added some links to older relevant threads that I found, but there is
a 60 day limit.
Although the below tags link to a member-site (popular), this is
really not meant to come across as advertising.. I had been looking
for some time into this similar issue, and information on the net
seems not only spotty and incomplete, but the solution is very
elusive... and it shouldn't be.
What's really tough to find is way to select objects at random, say by
control-clicking any files and shortcuts in a folder, and

Windows XP Virus
We've encountered a virus on one of our windows xp professional machines. It
locks the computer up at random intervals. We've cleaned the computer using
multiple different anti-viruses which fixes the problem for a time, however
the virus always comes back within a day. We've used anti-rootkits and found
nothing as well.
It also seems to only lock the computer up if it is connected with the

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Order of partitions in XP setup menu
The last time I reinstalled XP, Windows gave me the choice of

Next time this happens, I'm wondering--is there an order in which the
two partitions will appear? Does the one on the top refer to the

These actions will trigger an application lock-up:

Duplicate C & D Drives
While deleting a program, I did a Windows search to be sure that I had
removed all the files on the computer. What I found listed in the search
results were duplicates of the C & D Drives. The program I had deleted was
still listed on the duplicate D Drive but there was no option for deleting
the files. In fact when I tried to reinstall the program, it told me it was
already installed to d:\progra~1 instead of D:\Program Files. I tried going
into MS-DOS to delete the files there but access was denied for all of them.
I went ahead and reinstalled the program but it still shows th

WMP cannot play the file
I get this error in Windows Media Player when trying to run a playlist made
of .jpegs - after some
try I found the problem is the .jpgs size being 4000x3000 pixel, the memory
size being about 3MB, while all is ok with another group of jpegs sized 3MB
too but with 2800x2100 pixels. The first group comes from digital photos
taken with the setting "12MB normal resolution" while the second group has
been taken by setting "6MB fine resolution". Is there some option to set to

Apple's OS X has a really neat feature whereby a little icon pops up in

somehow with XP or if there was some program I might use to accomplish
this? I don't know how many hundreds of times I've been entering and

course the smart thing would be to have the option to show the password
instead of those stars since many of us are working alone.

File deletes unusually slow
A few weeks ago, I first noticed that it takes an unusually long time to

part, often just 1 KB. I right click on the file, choose delete, and the

to me. The delete proceeds and succeeds without any error messages.
Should I be concerned? If yes, what should I do to fix this?

Computer clock continually resets
I have a friend who is using Windows XP (SP2). Starting about a week ago,
when she boots up she gets an error message saying that her system's clock
is no longer valid, and that she should enter Setup (F2) to correct it.
This she does, but after shutting down the computer and re-booting at a
later time, she runs into the same error message (and a clock that is set to
August 1, 2004).
Is there a trick to setting the clock in XP (I am a Vista user) so that the
change is saved properly?

Fraud.Windows.ProtectionSuite
My daughter has this AND Microsoft.Windows.RedirectedHosts on
her computer. SpyBot finds them but can't fix them. It says
"Can not create C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ETC\Hosts access
denied" I downloaded HostsXpert and get the same message from
that when I try to reset to the original Windows host files.
MalwareBytes finds nothing as does SuperAntiSpyware. The only
way I can run anything is in safe mode. No icons work in regular
mode. If I click an icon I get a window asking what program I
want to use to open it.
Any help greatly appreciated...

Help sought for IE8.0 to display a web page.
Dear Sir,
I am able to view the webpage forum.avira.com with its layout when I am
logging on to my PC as 'any other user'. But the web page is not displayed
correctly with its layout when I am logging on as 'administator'. It is
showing at the end 'errors on the web page' icon. How is this possible? How
to get the page displayed when I am logging on as administrator?
Thanking you and expecting your posts,
Yours sincerely,
R. GANESAN.

Crawling computer
Hi Terry
Thanks for your response. Where do I see what browser it is? I think its
IE7 but need to be sure.
Also where do I look for the add-in's?
Thanks
Sorry that I have to repeat this post onto my PC. I had posted from my
laptop but it didn't appear in the NG. Had to go to Google Groups to
retrieve it. Copy and paste them to here as its easier to handle.
My original post:
"Computer works fine on everything else, but when on internet especially
video streaming for awhile, the computer slows down to a crawl. Often the
videos hang after awhile. Have to shutdown, res

XP Issues - system doesn't see keyboard
Something in my registry is keeping my system from seeing my keyboard
upon bootup of my XPproSP2 machine. Might be a virus or spyware but
at any rate, it boots fine and allows the mouse to work okay but the
keyboard isn't acknowledged. When I booted into safemode, the
keyboard appeared to be working all the way until it was time to enter
a password to get into Admin (when I started to type the admin
password, the num lock LED went out and for all intents and purposes,
the keyboard was dead). Aside from the keyboard not working, the
system seems to be okay. Also, I have a couple of r

I lost my WinXP Pro CD. I have a valid COA, but no CD. How can I download a
copy to make a new CD or what can be done so I can install it? Will a RegKey
for Pro work on a Home install (I have the Home CD, just can find the Pro)?
Any help is greatly appreciated,

Applications will not load
I have an HP running windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2.
This may be aprtofa malware episode but I am not able to get far enough to
find out for certain, every time I try to start an application I get the
window popping up asking me to choose the program I want to use to open the
file.
The only applications that appear to work are explorer.exe and outlook.exe.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Taskbar question.
I am using Windows XP with all updates. When I hover the cursor over the
clock icon in the taskbar a little box appears with the whole date such as
“Tuesday, March 2, 2010”. Recently that has stopped working in the fact that
the description box still opens up but it is hidden behind the taskbar. I
can just see the top edge of the box. After playing around I have found that
un-checking the keep taskbar on top option, the description is now visible
but, alas, the taskbar will soon get covered up and I want it always on top.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
