Looking toward 7 - and 16 bit progs.

I see Windows 7 on my horizon, and I also have several 16 bit legacy programs I've used for years and want to keep. On one hand I hear "Windows 7 and 16 bit? Fahgeddaboutit". On the other I hear that most will work OK in compatibility mode in Windows 7. Anyone know the straight dope on this? Thanks! Tony

Removing System Info from Taskbar

XP Pro,SP3, IE8. On the right hand side of the Taskbar, just to the left of the Notification Area, there is a clickable entry labeled 'My Computer' that will display the contents of the System C: drive. I would like to remove this entry to increase the Taskbar's real estate. It's probably a very simple click, but I don't find anything in customizing the taskbar that is of any help. Would appreciate someone telling me how can I turn that entry off. Thank you.

NG/Forum For Home Networking?

I want to speed up part of my home LAN, but am clueless. Main question is whether I can isolate part of the LAN and make it gigabit, leaving the rest Cat5e - specifically the connection between the PC I use for my daily work and my Windows Home Server box. Can a particular event be excluded from system event log?

I'm running XP Pro SP3 and my system log is difficult to monitor because it's overwhelmed by hundreds of innocuous information events, all with the same event number. Is there a way of preventing these particular events from appearing in the log, short of filtering out all information type events? The PC is an HP DC6005 MT with integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics. Offending event details are: Source - ati2mtag; Category - DVD-OV; ID - 62464; User- N/A; Description - UVD Information. HD over 137 GB

I do a lot of work on older machines. I've found that if I need to add a larger 2nd drive to a machine that has a 137 Gig Bios limit... all I need to do is *disable* that drive in the bios and let the operating system detect the drive. I've been doing that for years and have never had the slightest problem. Well, now I've worked on a machine where I am simply replacing two smaller drives with one larger one the ...and I used a 160gig drive...but the bios only detected it as 137gigs (and no, there is no bios update ) I went to install XP-sp3 and the installer recognize

Running an XP application in virtual PC

After setting up an XP virtual machine on my new Windows 7 desktop, I installed the application I needed XP to run. The app appeared to install successfully, but when I try to start it I get the error mssg: "this app cannot run as a terminal services client." This is a one person computer and I need to run in XP. Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPs, or FTP

I am aware that this has some thing to do with firewall settings, but I have no clue where to go from there. I am not very techno-savvy so please use layman's terms. The error message states: windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPs, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21) My internet service is DSL through AT&T the router is a 2wire 2701HG-s Windows firewall settings show all HTTP, HTTPs and FTP enabled. not sure where to go next

Cannot wake up from hibernation mode?

Hello to all! Finally my over 10-1/2 year old Dell desktop's extreme slowness has seriously gotten on my nerves and I'm now looking for a new one. is there a dos command that works like xcopy but compares file sizes or last modified dates?

I use xcopy to backup large amounts of data from three different parent folders to a 2nd hdd. It works great, but I would like to use a more efficient method of only backing up files that are a different size, have a different last modified date, or don't already exist, so no files that haven't been modified since the last backup will be copied again. Is there a DOS command similar to XCopy that will allow me to do this? I like using DOS commands because they are fast.

Outlook express problem!!!!!

Dear all: I use Outlook express as my default mail handler and everything work fine BUT... When I rigth click over a file>send to>mail recipient, this open a new mail windows with my file attached, i select my contact to send the message but when i click send, the message it's not sended and it close the windows of new mail and even my windows explorer. Restart remote computer

Hello Group: Both Systems: Windows XP/SP3 I use Windows remote desktop from home to my office computer. Everything works fine unless I have to restart the office computer from home. Every command I've tried from the home computer just shuts the office computer down, and does not restart it. (The remote office computer does not have a CMOS or other startup password preventing its retarting.) Here's what I've tried: 1. Start|Run|Taskmgr--->Shutdown|Restart (CTRL-ALT-DEL) of course typed on the home keyboard only brings up the taskmgr for the home computer.) 2. ALT-CTRl-END

Interrupts?

Not seen much about interrupts, and not even entirely sue what they are. But I've noticed - coincidentally or not - that since I did the delete of MS Update software to get back to using the less processor hogging Windows Update, I keep seeing interrupts flare up to a large percentage of the cpu. This is on an old Inspiron 2600 laptop with only 260 meg of memory at the moment. It was recently updated to an 80gig WD hard drive, which seems to be running well, and this is with XPHome SP3 all up to date. 'Cannot load dialogue'

XPhome SP3 all up to date. Recently started getting this message popping up for no apparent reason: " Cannot load dialogue. Error 623 The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection." I am connected by ethernet cable to broadband via router and all seems to be working well except for this pop up which doesn't seem to be associated with any 'phone book requests' of my own. Folder Compare/Synch Apps?

I have two PC's, each with about a dozen shares visible on the LAN. I want to compare the shares to see if all files/folders are present on both PCs without having to run the app once for each share. I've been though a half-dozen downloads/trials, but have not found anything. Does anybody have something that works for them? One execution - many shares. I guess comparison and synch would be convenient to have in the same app, but OTOH maybe they are better kept separate to lessen the chances of user error.... -) -- PeteCresswell

Where could I get an applet that would wake up every 30 minutes, read the battery strength on my laptop, and write the results to a file? I looked at several shareware apps that monitor the battery, but didn't see any that can make a log. Any suggestions or pointers?

Monitor won't turn off when machine idle

I have a Sony VAIO desktop, purchased in 2006, running XP Professional with SP3, fully updated. I have the screensaver set to none, and the power settings set to turn off the picture on my monitor (ViewSonic) after 15 idle minutes.
