External Drive (USB) Not Recognized

I have XP SP3 and have attached an external drive via a USB cord. While the system tray shows "New Device has been added to your system", when I go to My Computer all that I see is the C:\ drive. No external drive. Any recommendations before I get a new drive? Thanks (B^>)-]=[

Wireless Conundrum

Trying wireless connection in home using laptop that has WinXP SP3 active and a Dell Wireless 1370 card. Have good wireless signal (54MB) after setup each day. Find at restart computer in Run/services.msc always has Windows Zero Configuration as Automatic but not Started. Seems turning computer off takes it out of active Start status. Result is no Wireless Networks tab at Ctl Panel/ Network Connections/(right click)Wireless Network Connections/Properties so can't designate Windows to be used. Router is new Belkin N150 that operates this desktop with hardwire and Belkin support

repair a windows installation from within ANOTHER installation

Laptop won't come out of Stand By

Hello I purchased a used Dell D620 laptop a few months ago. It is working fine except for the last few days. I put it in Stand By to go to bed. The next morning I press the power on button and nothing happens. I unplug it and restart it and it's okay. Any ideas on how to avoid this? It could be something simple or obvious like how I'm pressing the button or something. Any ideas?

ScreenSaver slideshow

In addition to the toolbar change that I mentioned above and found the 'fix' for, I see that the screensaver slideshow has also reverted to some default. I have a folder of slides that I created, and I want them to be presented sequentially. Up until today, I had it set for sequential. Now it has reverted to random sequence, and I can't seem to find the place for sequential. I think it may have to do with "PLUS!" which I foolishly bought several years ago. Advice, please?

Two network - One Domain controller

My Network configuration is as follows: 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.255 (Subnetmask - 255.255.255.0 ) 192.168.3.1-192.168.3.255 (Subnetmask - 255.255.255.0 ) I have only one Domain controller with two NIC cards. One NIC card is connected to 192.168.2.0 Network(via one switch) and other NIC card is connected to 192.168.3.0 network (via another switch). Will this one server serve as DC for two networks ? Disappearance of all desktop icons

Hi, in an effort make more space on my pc AND to delete programs that I do not use any more or care to use, I decided to switch one of my malware programs for another one. I actually wanted to try something different and hopefully seemed like it is less size than AVG. I installed avast and when I went to uninstall AVG, the size of Avast in the add and remove programs was 114 MB !!! AVG was somehting like 27MG. Computer won't boot

I have an older computer with a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard that I home-built a few years back. I recently built a new computer and have been keeping the old one alive until I get the new one all checked out and settled in. Yesterday the old computer wouldn't boot. Hi, I can't seem to get this to work the way it used to. When I try to upload pictures to a site online, & I begin the process to browse from my pc, all my files on my pc are mixed around. Note that I like to view "My Pictures" in thumbnail but "My documents" in list view. Both in Folders first. Both in alphabetical order. The issue I'm seeing is actually on an NT4 server with IE6-sp1, but I'm asking here because there aren't enough people following NT4 newsgroups any more, and I figure that NT is similar enough to XP in this situation. Can't connect to my wireless home network?

I ended up just "fixing" it myself by imaging a clean HDD that I had laying around for the exact same computer (I'd bought it for parts when I needed a screen backlight, and later a keyboard) and reinstalling all my apps and then moving my documents back over. I have a Dell XPS-Z 866Mhz Pentium 3, with 384mb and a 20Gig hard drive that I use for the web, and I've been having speed issues with my system that are worse than usual. I need to point the audio setup at a specific bit of software, rather than an installed sound card. (Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device) Normally it's an option that gets selected via the GUI. However, while I can set the default device to the bit of s/w I want, that is only after it loads on startup, which is too late for it to be selected automatically, and I have to go to control panel and do it manually. Is there some command line I can use, for example, something like: "set Sounds and Audio/Audio/Default Device = mySoftware"? instead of what appears at present "S

You nice folks led me to Event Viewer not too long ago, and in studying it, I find under Applications that Automatic Live Update is being run every 3 hours. It isn't my Norton Anti- Virus Live Update, and I do not allow Windows Live Update to run. Or at least I think I have it set so that I run Windows Update when I choose to do so. I'm posting this for a friend who had his computer to crash and he did a system restore and lost some old emails. Is there any way to get those emails back? Save As Dialog Box defaulting as Thumbnail View.

I have noticed when I right click on a file to "save As" the dialog always defaults to Thumbnail View and so I have to click on the views tab to change it to Detail Tab is there a way in folder options or control panel to change the setting to make the dialog box default to detail view ? Recycle bin problems

One of my two boxes running XP Pro has developed a problem with the Recycle bin. The bin shows as empty. I delete something and get the normal dialog if you want to send it to the recycle bin, reply Yes and it vanishes. Recycle bin still shows empty icon and opening the bin shows no contents. Running disc cleanup shows that the recycle bin has 0 KB. It's almost like doing a shift del (bypassing the recycle bin and directly deleting) but I do get the delete confirmation dialog that specifies recycle bin. Any ideas on how to fix this? tia - Oppie

Suddenly, the sound does not work in Internet Explorer 8 - Video links folks send me play fine - but no sound. All the songs in My Music play fine. All Windows sounds in other programs work. Fails to open

I have two websites that I have accessed regularly for years with no problems. Recently I installed "Microsoft Security Essentials" and since then I cannot open those two sites. I am assuming that the antivirus program is blocking them but don't know how to allow them to run. I disabled the AV program through "services.msc" but still can't open them. I tried restarting after disabling but the AV program is active at startup so that's no help. Is there a way to stop the AV from running at startup? Selected application/file not on top

If I currently have 18 windows open (and yes, I work with that many open at times) of various programs, and I open another file from a shortcut or from the Desk Top's "My Documents", or from Recent Documents, it opens minimized with all the other windows at the bottom of the screen, then I have to look for it and click on it to maximize it. Why does it open in a minimized status? Is there a way to change this? Connie

I had problems with my main hard drive (HD#1) - Windows would load normally and mouse and key board worked but all the icons were dead - could not load programs - did System Restore with three previous restore points and still had same problem - could not believe System Restore did not solve this problem - entered BIOS and booted into backup hard drive (HD#2) and used a True Image file (about 2 weeks old) to restore HD#1 - worked fine - shut off computer. Later went to boot back up into HD#1 and got message "Error Loading Operating System" - tried 2 more times - same erro
