I have attempted many times to install update XP kb 979683 today and it is 
downloaded but will not intall.  Have followed all solutions from the 
solution self hep section and nothing is working.   HELP PLEASE

I have exactly the same problem. Can anyone help us? (Just to clarify - this is not the same problem that most people have where it keeps wanting to install again even though it is already installed. It is not installed and whenever I try it says some componenets could not be installed!)

I see that they had this problem in 2006 according to a search for error 
Error Code: 0x64C .

If you have downloaded it and tried to install it it will have a log file. 
Look there for clues. 

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your 
subscription current?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? 
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the 
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought 
it)?

What result do you get when you run the Fix It in
