The video codec does what its name says: it decodes video. When you view
a movie and you see video but no sound, then the video codec is
working fine, but the audio codec usually isn't present or isn't working.
FFDShow contains a lot of commonly used video/audio codecs:

Does installing it help?

I work for JVC and would like to try to help.
I am assuming you are using a standard definition JVC camcorder. When you
install the JVC CD-ROM that came with your camcorder, you also install the
codecs that are necessary for playback. If you have installed the CD-ROM,
then Windows Media Player should be able to play your JVC files with no
problem. Also, the CD-ROM includes playback software from JVC and basic
editing software. Please try this. If this does not work, or if you have a
JVC HD camcorder, please respond back with the specific JVC model number, as
well as which version of Windows you are running. Thanks!

Thanks, Chris @ JVC - we do try telling users to install the CD which
came with the device, but I do winder if you should physically strap
the CD to the side of the camera on a piece of string to distribute
clue <g>
The first thing users do is chuck the box aside and run about
recording their kids - it's only 3 months later when they try to get
the clips to play on the PC using a weird and wacky choice of codecs
selected by the manufacturer (different, seemingly for each camera)
that they realise that it doesn't work - and the CD has totally gone
out of their head and may indeed be in the attic by now <g>
Cheers !
