PC Shuts down-Vista
Hi
I have Vista and for an unknown reason the pc shuts itself down, sometimes
after 45 mins, 30 mins, sometimes after 10 mins. This has only been happening
since we cleaned the dust out of the base unit which we did do carefully.
I have tried system restore, downloaded windows updates, updated norton and
done a full scan (of which took several hours and the pc stayed on) all fans
seem to be working.
Nothing seems to trigger it in particular and timings are different.
Any ideas would be welcome.
Thankyou

Power Options
I have an HP laptop using Vista SP-2. Until recently, the power settings
worked the way I set them (especially shutting off the display after 15
minutes of idle time). Now, this particular setting doesn't work (the
display stays on all the time). I haven't checked the other settings
yet. Tried Google but couldn't find anything that applied. Suggestions
for a solution?
Sorry, but I tried to cross-post to two groups and NEITHER group posted
my message. So I posted them individually.

Finger pointing device problem
I reciently purchased a laptop with good specs in hope it would handle more
multitasking. Every so often the laptop forgets about the finger pointing
device (the thing that replaces the mouse) and that arrow becomes perminantly
stuck. It sometimes happens with the keyboard also, sometimes both at once.
It's like it crashes but everything else is still working.
Is this normal?!

UAC prompts started today for no reason (after windows updates)
I've had UAC disabled on my Vista SP1 machine for years without
problem.
Today, 2/26/2010, after 4 automatic windows updates were installed,
UAC prompts started appearing again for some programs, and some of my
start up programs are blocked.
ControlPanel User still shows UAC disabled, and I've tried disabling
it again in msconfig, but nothing fixes the problem.
Is anyone else having issues like these since the recent updates?
Any suggestions?

time i did it (and the 1st time, with all the info above, my computer
didn't finish even after 12hrs+. unfortunately, defragmentation does not
have some loading bar, so i could not tell if the thing just stopped or
it was just taking a super long time.)

Not sure where to post this so here goes:
Can anyone comment on whether they think an Avast's AV scanner is any good.
I just got finished fixing a friends 2 month old Vista laptop that wouldn't

Just seems like with Avast running on this machine things got pretty screwed

A while back in attempting to check and correct my registry of any

been verified as non-malicious, but clearly it doesn't do it's job)
The problems started with my inability to update Skype, then Windows

desktop freezing when idle
I have Vista Home Premium 32bit. When my PC becomes idle for different
periods of time, my desktop freezes. The little blue circle doesn't

turn it off and on again to get it to work.
As long as the system stays busy with something in motion, everything
is terrific. This has been going on for a couple of weeks & getting

This problem has been going on for about three weeks now. I don't
really know why. CPU usage is normal, fluctuates between 0 and 25. The

this one out for the life of me...
I don't have any viruses or rogue processes running that I can see. It
does not occur in safe mode but still does even when I use game booster

for game being played). I'm stumped!

I am trying to fix my daughter's PC which runs Vista SP2. The computer

Pressing ctrl alt delete twice gives you the task manager and then it is

I have run a virus check and also for spyware.
Please can you suggest a possible cause or what I need to look for.

Windows Not Starting Past Loading Bar
New to the forums, hope this is the right place for this.
For the last few days, I haven't been able to start Windows past the
green loading bar. The first couple of days when I tried to turn on the
computer it would take me to an 'Error Start Up' screen where I would
try to restart using safe mode or something.
Now though, it does the blue HP screen, then goes black with a grey
loading bar that says "Loading Files" and then from there it goes to the
green loading bar.
This has happened to me once before, although, it was fixed in just a
couple of days. I removed the main po

Resurrect the ReadyBoost Cache Delete on Reboot Thread
After reading several threads regarding this issue from 2008, and seeing
no real solutions, I felt I had little choice but to resurrect it for my
own sake. It's now 2010, and apparently I have the same issue with the
same lack of solution.
I have ReadyBoost enabled on a brand new, ReadyBoost-compatible 8GB OCZ
Rally2 USB flash disk. However, upon every reboot, the cache file is
completely deleted and recreated from scratch. That is to say, it
doesn't just write it to disk and re-cache it after the reboot: it
removes it completely and starts caching on-the-fly once again. This is

Hi. I have an Acer 5735 Laptop with vista Home Premium 32 bit. My

start using it straight away (ie just moving the mouse). If I don't

A performance/progress question on Defrag
I located an old hard drive stored on a shelf the other day and
connected it to my Vista machine with a USB dongle. I decided to defrag
it (350Gb). Now, I already know that Vista's defrag provides NO
indication of progress other than that pretty lame statement that "this
may take a few minutes to a few hours".
I've seen mention of other defraggers here in this NG and am wondering
if any of them provide visual progress indications. Previous OS's used
either marching colored blocks, or slowly moving vertical bands in a
window. Vista's, on the other hand, simply does nothing

Only 1 restore point left
Vista Home Premium SP2, IE8
Went to do a system restore, and found I had only 1 restore point,
Dec.18th.
That restore point was *created by me* a few hours after I installed
the following updates ( I set the machine in Manual update ) today
Dec.18th:
Updates for MS Office Excel Viewer 2003 ( KB978558 )
Excel Viewer 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Security update for MS Excel Viewer 2007 (KB958442 )
Note : There is *no* restore point created by the machine for the
Windows Updates installation.
Why ?
Is Excel Viewer 2007 SP2 the culprit ?
Also, I have both Excel viewer 2003 and 2007.

via LAN. Some with Map Network Drive and some with a Link //192.168.../c$
If all other mounted PCs are up and running, my PC is fast. But if only one
of the mounted PCs is down, the PC becomes verry slow. Even if the pathes to
the other PCs are not really need to be used it seams that Vista try to
connect and wait for a timeout.
What can I do to prevent Vista from accessing networks which are not
available. I don't want to remove and add these connections several times a
day, depending on other users shut

the computer locks instead of hibernating
Hello!
I am running running Windows Vista Business 32-bit in a Fujitsu-Siemens
LIFEBOOK P8020 notebook. I also have a SuSe Linux Boot Loader installed
because it also runs openSUSE 11.2
When I select hibernate from the shut down menu, the screen turns dark and
then a message appears: "Locking computer...". After that the login-screen
pops up.
The computer never enters hibernation; the command is to hibernate, but it
simply locks the computer, even when it reaches the critical battery level. I
am not sure if this behaviour is due to the installation of the latest

Any programs or sites that re-install system files?
I ran a sfcscan and... It seems I have some corrupt files. This laptop
doesn't have a recovery/reformat drive or i'd just reformat the laptop.
Moreover, I don't have a recovery disc for vista, just Win-7.
Perhaps anyone can pinpoint me in the right direction?
I have the CBS file... However it's close to 24MBs...

Vista eternal shutdown
This is a question I am confident has been asked and answered but I have
been unable to find the answer - maybe because I don't know the right
search terms.
Vista Home Premium
Sometimes when I try to shut down the PC - START-SHUTDOWN and either
shutdown or restart - the shutdown can take, literally, 60-75 minutes
and sometimes longer. Since I usually don't have that long to wait,
removing the power cord is an adequate substitute. I am, however, not
happy with that.
How can I eliminate these eternal shutdowns?

I didn't see that it said for XP when I downloaded and installed it. Using
the uninstall in Control panel, I tried to uninstall. I got back an error
(1713) message that say's 'can't install'. Please help me get this program
uninstalled.
Thank you.

CPU running at 100% and memory at maximum, getting mad!
Dear all,
I've enjoyed my dell XPS M1330 laptop for over two years now. Never had
any significant trouble with it...until now. It has Vista home premium
32 bit and 4GB of ram.
Last week on friday I left my laptop on the whole night (it's something
I did before and found no hassles the next morning) with plenty of air
circulation where it was located. The next morning the laptop began
unexpectedly running very slow, hanging and it even crashed on me. I
always start the task manager when turning the laptop on and found that
no file was using much memory or resources (windows explo

Registry
I have a vista machine (quad-core 500gb hdd) that's a couple years
old. The registry is now 30.2 GB! So from time to time it goes out to
lunch when it is doing shadow copy or restore point creation. I just
can't begin to imagine what could be stored in the registry that is 30
Gig. The registry is supposed to be for settings AFASIK but I've seen
blob chunks in there that are quite large and I guess that's how this
is happening. Any advice on reducing the size, future prevention of
this, or other registry management advice would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Restarting Every Morning
Since last few days, my system has starting to restart every morning sharp at 8:00 AM. I'm show this message (Attached below) and given 5 minutes to close all apps before restarting. But it's really annoying when that happens everyday! I've no idea, what program finishes running everyday, irrespective of whether I'm connected to the net or not.
I've checked all the possible places, Registry (Windows Run keys), msconfig, services, scheduled tasks, etc. but am not able to make out any suspicious task which might be running that causes this regular restart.
Can someone please help me f

Performance problem in Vista Windows explorer if /SWAPRUN:NET is set on an executable.
I have rather big executables (about 25-35 MB). Because I want my
users to easily execute my application, I don't want them to install a
bunch of DLL's, just xcopy-install is OK for me (and my customers).
Because my software is often run from a network drive, and my
customers' networks are not always reliable, I link my executables
using the /SWAPRUN:NET option. This guarantees that the whole EXE is
loaded in memory before the application starts, and prevents crashes
if the network connection is dropped while my application is running.
This worked fine so far, BUT ... under Windows Vis

Windows 7 Desktop Windows Manager memory leak?
I couldn't find Windows-7 groups, so I'm posting here. Please redirect if
required.
On PCs where the user remains logged in, but is not using the mouse or
keyboard, the memory used by the DWM continues to increase until some mouse
or keyboard activity takes place. On my PC Hydra, for example, DWM.exe uses
up to 600MB, and appears to cause other applications to give up their own
working set. PC Stamsund shows similar problems, but I tend to use that
every couple of days.

Something may be wrong with my Ram,motherboard, hard drive or whatnot? Help me =[
Alright when i start up my laptop it goes into the HP invent screen and
shows the F keys at the bottom.
Than after a little bit it goes onto the screen that has the blinking
underscore (the blinking _ sign" than it just stays there... It makes
these loud beeping noises than stops after a little bit. I don't know
what to do and I REALLY don't want to take it to a professional for
reasons i don't wish to say.
Edit:
I don't think that I have my system restore CD's as well, and I would
love to keep my files.
