Can't send email all of a sudden, can only receive

  • Follow

This has never happened before. I can receive, but as of today, cannot send
email. I am running Microsoft vista home premium, and windows mail. I
didn't change any settings, and it was working fine yesterday. Here is my
error message:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'test', Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server:
'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F

Can anyone help me? I have turned off my anti-virus program scan of
outgoing mail, but that did not do anything.

Change the SMTP port to 587 and make sure: My Server Requires
Authentication is checked.

How do I set up/configure Outlook Express & Windows Mail for Comcast
email?

Thank you, Bruce. I can now send email again after making the changes you
suggested. Can you just tell me, why did everything work yesterday as it was
set up, and stop working today? Why did I need to change these settings
today?

Comcast started blocking port 25 about two years ago, but is applying it
gradually to their customers.

If I were you, I'd give them hell for not notifying you.

Thanks again - as you can tell, I not only wanted to know what the fix was,
but also why it was broken. And your answer makes me realize once again,
that Comcast is not comcastic. I haven't had as many internet problems as I
have cable problems, but they can be frustrating, and where I live, I do not
have an alternative cable company. I spent a good deal of time today trying
to figure this out, and some timely info from them would have apparently
averted that.
