Best to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP. The damage caused by the
viruses cannot be repaired.

You might be better off posting to an Windows XP group the group you wrote
to is for Windows Vista......but I just googled for that error "D00000144"
and brought up a few results:
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=D000144+unknown+hard+error+&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
I also found your question on this forum
http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/windows-vista/481779-re-d0000144-unknown-hard-error.html
with a response suggesting reinstalling Windows (including formatting Hard
drive), as long as you have the disk and CD-Key......should be easy.
