Server 2008 with SSD drive

  • Follow

The client is having some lag problems with Remote access to a application
Server 2003 R2. When clients log in and in some cases when printing, the
other users either slow way down or become totally unresponsive.

I bought a Mushkin 128gb SSD drive and want to install it in the backup
server as a test to see if the faster drive access makes any difference. At
the same time they would upgrade to Server 2008.

The drive would have the OS, a Firebird database server and the program
files they use. Client count is probably < 10.

Has anyone tried this out yet? I can't find Server 2008 compatibility
hardware for SATA II controllers, so I am at a loss to select one. Right
now I have an AMCC 3Ware 7000/8000 Series ATA RAID controller and the link
that discusses Vista/Server 2008 compatibility is broken.

Any experience here?

Thanks,

Rick

If anything about this question had to do with Small Business Server then it
would be barely on topic. The only reference I see is about the scale (10
users) but not necessarily about the product.

Suggest you post in the relevant Server OS web forum.

Tried Kingston and Corsairs in SBS2008. Reads are very fast. Writes
tend to slow things down. Overall poor performer as a server drive.
This on a SuperMicro X7DVL-E motherboard with 1 quad-core Intel Xeon
and 8 gigs of RAM, using both the onboard chipset and an PCIx RAID
controller.

IOW, they should only be used for storing stuff that doesn't change
much, but is read frequently.

So, ideal for the OS drive (after moving temporary files, profile
folders, page file, logs, etc elsewhere), and static content, not so
good for general storage, and awful for logs (SQL, Exchange, system).
