  • Follow

I am not sure if I have sellected the correct place to ask this question.
I have a Server running 2003 Small Business server, I recently upgaded with
a fresh install my Dell 490 Workstation that has 2 processors to Win 7 x64. I
cannot run the SBS Connector for remote access, give me a mesage that the
Processor Arch. is incorrect. I know hat with WIN7 x32 it works but am not
able to run it on the x64 version. Can anyone guide me in the correct
direction?

Hello D.Sweet,

Thanks for your post.

I would like to confirm that whether the "SBS Connector for remote access" refer to Remote Web Workplace (RWW) or not?

If so, please check if the Windows 7 'Microsoft Remote Web Workplace' Activex control is approved and enabled. Also try to "Run as Administrator" in Internet Explorer in
the Windows 7 machine to connect RWW. However, if the issue persists, please let us know the exact error message you received and what action you take that caused the
error message.

Remote web work place does function. What does not os the VPN connector that
can be installed on the desktop so you can join remotely the SBS network and
access the resources. It worked on the 32 bit version of Win 7 on this same
machine.
The dialog box reads:
Connect to Small Business Server

This profile was not built for this processor architure. Please contact your
Administrator o get the appropriate profile for this architecture.

You have to set up the VPN manually.

Open the Network and Sharing Center. Click on Setup a New Connection or
Network. Highlight Connect to a Workplace then click on Next. Create a New
Connection then Next. Click on Use my Internet Connection (VPN). For the
Internet address use the address you would use for RWW e.g.
remote.mydomain.com. For Destination name you can use whatever you want. Put
a check mark in the box beside "Don't connect now. Just set it up so I can
connect later" then click on Next. Leave User, Password, and Domain blank
then click on Create. This will create the connection. Now in the Network
and Sharing Center click on Connect to a network. You should see the new
connection. Highlight it and click connect. Fill in the User name, Password,
and Domain boxes. For the best security don't check the box to save the
password.

Thanks, That suggestion worked out. Thank you for the input.
Thought it was odd that the Connector failed though. Would have thought that
it would have been listed as an option to set up the connection manually in
the failure message.
Thanks again,

Hi D.Sweet,

Thanks for your reply and Kerry's advice.

Glad to know the work round that manually created VPN connection works fine on 64 bit Windows 7 client.

This issue is by design and actually occurs not only to 64 bit Windows 7 client, but also to other 64 bit OS client including Windows Vista. A good work round is to create a
VPN connection manually instead of using the VPN connector that created by SBS connecting computer wizard. Because the Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK)
installed on the SBS Server(location is C:\programs files\CMAK\cmak.exe) is for 32 bit program and the created service profile for client computer is 32 bit too.

You must install CMAK on a computer that is running the same processor architecture as the computers on which you want to install the profile. To create a profile for a 64-bit
version of Windows, then you must create the profile on a computer that is running 64-bit version of Windows, such as Windows Server 2008 R2. To create a profile for a 32-
bit version of Windows, then you must create the profile by using CMAK on computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows. You can install CMAK on the 32-bit version of
Windows 7 as an optional feature. (see: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd672667(WS.10).aspx and http://www.isaserver.org/img/upl/vpnkitbeta2/cmak.htm )
