Outlook keeps asking for password - Help Needed.

  • Follow

Hi,
Server is SBS 2008 with SP2.
Clients running Vista SP2.

In the last couple of days (possibly after server updates were applied, but
not sure) every time users open Outlook they get a dialog asking for a
password. If the user enters their correct password the dialog just comes
straight back again.

On looking at the password request box, I notice it is quoting the external
remote domain name "remote.accordconsultancy.co.uk" not the internal network
name "accordserver.accordconsultancy.local". Can anyone explain what I need
to do to stop this annoying message from coming up.

Users find if they cancel it 4 times everything behaves OK, but it keeps
coming up so frustration levels are getting very high.

I have re-run the "connect to the internet" wizard to see if I can clear it
but it seems to have made no difference. Any help appreciated.

Chris,
No, the client machines that this is happening to are on the internal wired
network or internal wireless network.

The thing that is strange is the fact that the password dialog has the
Server's host name as viewed from the internet
"remote.accordconsultancy.co.uk" as opposed to its internal name
"AccordServer".

I have checked their Outlook settings and everything is standard exchange
stuff quoting the internal server name and the correct user names

I looked in the server's DNS and there is a "Forward Lookup Zone" for
"remote.accordconsultancy.co.uk", is this correct, coulc it be causing the
security dialogs appearing when Outlook is started??

Do you get any errors/credential prompts on the OL 2007 clients when you
click Send/Receive and they try to download the Offline Address Book?

When I click Send/Receive I get any errors.
If I skip password prompt or insert credenzial, outlook working good.
in random mode every 3 minutes Outlook keeps asking for a password exchange
server.
I try a test, I apply backup of 01 dec 2009 but the issue persist, now
apply a november backup.

Can you click the arrow next to Send/Receive and choose the option to
download the offline address book only. I'm trying to ascertain if the
credential prompts are coming from the download of the OAB, since the email
seems to be working otherwise. I think it is.

If that is the case, you should be able to show all folders in OL 2007 and
look for the Sync Folder for an error message that may provide an additional
clue.

If it's not the OAB, I may have other suggestions for Leag.

It could be possible that the user account name was changed, and Outlook has
the original name cached, or there was an additional email account added,
then removed at one time, and Outlook has that cached as well. I saw this a
couple of times, once after a migration. It was in an unjoined machine with
Outlook configured with RPC/HTTP, but had three POP3 accounts, as well. I
deleted two of the POP3 accounts, since part of the migration was to
consolidate two domain names. I went through the Exchange account properies
to make sure the users mailbox was working with the new account, etc. The
user called me back about 30 min later saying it keeps popping up for
credentials. I remoted in and saw the pre-filled credentials in the box were
that of the original account. I had to delete the profile and recreate it to
clean it up.

It could also be a corrupt profile. More info at the following link
regarding corrupt profiles and password prompts:

Save password setting not retained in Outlook or Outlook Express. ... When
you connect to your Internet service provider (ISP) to retrieve messages
from a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) server, your password is not retained
even though you chose to save the password. Entering the correct password
again does not resolve the issue.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290684/en-us

Or simply try:
Tools/Email Accounts
Click Next (with View or Change existing email accounts selected)
Highlight the Exchange account mailbox - click Change
Click More Settings
Click the Security tab
Deselect the "Always prompt for user name and password" checkbox.

Or try:
Start - Run
Type in: control userpasswords2
Click Advanced
Manage Passwords
Click Add
Then add the exchange server address in and your username and password and
click ok.

Also, another suggestion for Leag to try. If on Vista, close Outlook, then
rename the Windows profile Protect key in the reg. This is basically the
password key for the profile. Read the following for more info with step by
step pics. Read the whole thing through before making any changes to
understand what it's talking about:

Last, but not least, if it is happening on more than one machine, there
could be a time skew in the domain, but then again that would generate
errors in the DCs' event logs, which need to be checked.

Fix For Outlook 2007 Constantly Asking for Password on Vista

I hope this is helpfu, and that it wasn't too much to read!

Yes, it's in Italian, but has the arrows/greater than signs prepended. He's
getting error 0X8004010F, unable to locate URL downloading the OAB.

Leag - You need to troubleshoot that error. There may be additional events
on the server and maybe the client that should help narrow it down some
more. I'd offer some suggestions but there is a lot of info on that
particular error that may or may not be relevant to your environment.

It confused me a bit because of the prepended indents. I'm glad you picked
up on that.

I did find two KB articles and a couple of other links on this, posted
below, including a couple of other articles I found. I agree there are
various reasons this error can occur. Leag would be the best to determine
that reading through the articles. I hope they help.

I tried this but it did not work, and I did not even have this RPC
registry key!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913843

The thing that kills me is that Exchange / Outlook 07 works fine!!!

BTW: Why install the Exchange 2007 Rollup when you can install SP2???

The article you posted, refers to a different issue than this thread.
It implies the workstation does not have a gateway. Are you having
problems with Outlook prompting for credentials multiple times?

As for the rollup, there are additional fixes and updates the SP
doesn't have. It's an accumulative package "rolled" up into one. If any
of the components are in the package that are already installed, such
as a later service pack, it won't be installed.

Interesting about the roll up... I will apply it anyway. Yes I am
being asked multiple times. Although we do have clients that are not
asked... and the mail works fine despite this any anyoying message.
Also instead of "Connected to MS Exchange" in the lower right of
Outlook, I get "need password". I just click "Type password.." and
Outlook continues to work!

I will update later if the Rollup has an effect.

Hi All;

I am happy to report that the issue is closed. 20 hours have gone by.
No more reqests for passwords etc. Exchange is back to normal.

I am now considering applying Exch Sp2.

Thanks Ace,

Glad to hear! You are welcome. I hope all works out. As far as SP2, I would
heed Larry's warnings.

Hi

You can short out your password prompt problem by following these steps
-
In your outlook just go to tool tab go to account tab then on opened
window go to mail tab select the mail account and then go to its
properties, on server tab tick the remember password check box.

It will solve your problem,
If your mail box get corrupted or damaged then you can try Kernel
Exchange Mailbox Recovery software from -

Hi !

May be you have don't putting right password so that you are receiving
such type error message. if you putting correct password and after that
you receive such type message too, probably your outlook log file may be
corrupted. you can resolve these issue using third party kernel software
