Exmerge vs Export PST from clients

  • Follow

I'm in the process of moving mail from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008...the
suggestion from someone in this group was to use Exmerge to do it
easily and after reading up on Exmerge it does seem pretty simple to
do, but i have a couple of concerns:

- Exmerge size limit is 2 gigs if i am reading correctly, so those
users with mailboxes large than that (several of them) will need to
me manually exported

- Exmerge, if i understand correctly, is just exporting the mail and a
different step is needed for Calendar, etc?

What i want to know is, why not just export each users mail to a PST
on the client and then import those into the SBS 2008 machine once
i've setup those users mail? That way i get my calendar, contacts,
etc and there is no file size limitation...it honestly seems to be the
easiest way, or is there a more simple way. I DON'T want to connect
the computers to each other to migrate for fear of one contaminating
the other (possible virus issues on SBS 2003 server)...I am doing
clean installs of windows on all of the clients and then setting them
up to a clean SBS 2008 box...i have all weekend/monday to do
this...thanks!

You are right Exmerge is a 2GB Limit

I can't remember how many users you have?

In a Small Migration:
You can do some fancy things like stopping it during etc.
And exmerge will grab everything except public folders.

Grab the Small ones with Exmerge
Login as the User Export everything from the Big ones. (Using At least
Outlook 2003)
Including calendars etc.
And then Import them on each user
yes this is a long process.
But You can jump around and have each PC do it's thing.
I will either create a common folder on the Server for me to use
or the users personal folder.

You also need to Login as Domain Admin and Grab the Public Folders
separately

Then I move the PST's to the "users NEW Folder on the SBS2008 box
and import them as the last thing
after I connect them with "http://connect"

Here is another way that may work better for you.

btw: on the >2GB issue, the Exchange crowd have this nifty script (brought
to my attention by Michael Smith, Exch MVP)
http://theessentialexchange.com/blogs/michael/archive/2009/10/16/exporting-mailboxes-larger-than-2-gb-on-an-exchange-server.aspx

it breaks up large mailboxes into <2GB 'chunks'

Thanks for that last post, *SuperGumby *- I wonder why MS doesn't
provide their own solution for this! (confused)

In defense of Microsoft
You may remember back in 2002-2003 a 1GB Mailbox was considered Extremely
Large.
(200MB was large.) a 2GB Mailbox was considered un Imaginable....
Thus There was no need to make a tool that did this.

Jaredean, you are correct in your outline of Exmerge limitations and of
course as you say you can export the mailboxes from outlook as well and
then import them via outlook on the new system.

The 2GB limitation comes from the fact that Exmerge only supports the
ANSI format which has a 2GB limit. Further regarding Outlook 97 - 2002
Personal File Folders (PST Format) only supported the ANSI format and
for that reason a PST can be no larger than 2GB.

Outlook 2003 forward uses the UNICODE format which supports PST files up
to 20GB. OS if you opt for the OUtlook export/import method be sure to
use Outlook 2003 or greater AND when you create a PST ensure its a
UNICODE PST.

Alternatively you might try checking out Lucid8's DigiScope product
http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp since it allows you to do
everything that Exmerge does and more. (Like opening offline EDB's,
Searching for specific messages, undeleting items, purging items, etc)

However, this appears to be a *very* expensive solution for the money,
and even the 3 month version for a small company requires the multiple
PST support, I think - ending up to be about $675 for 3 months only.

If I would spend such amounts for a tool, I would prefer that the
software is an unlimited time-period one only, and even if you buy the
perpetual one, it cannot be transferred to another server/store,
interestingly enough!

There is a way from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010...
And as always the expectation is that you moved to Exchange 2007 three years
ago.
Sorry...

Yes but a large amount of people still haven't migrated to 2007 and IMO
if that's the case you ate better off moving ro 2010

If you are a SBS Server company, that's not possible on SBS ;0
Unless you want to Buy another Server just for exchange :)
Which although possible, kind of expensive :)

My point is, this is always the way things work.
The new comes out and legacy support gets EOL and new tools especially do
not get built.
It is just the way things will always be, Microsoft or any other Software
company :(
Sorry, I don't make up the laws of Software Upgrades, I've just learned to
live with them. :(

Don't worry
The other day a new client called me and they have a Win2000 Server...
and of course they wondered why no more support for it?
