I'm migrating from 2003 SBS to 2008, using the swing migration kit &
am at the point of running the connect to the internet wizard on what
will be my new 2008 sbs.
I have a spare firewall, Sonicwall TZ-170, that I've copied my
setting to from the one in my production environment, wanting to
simulate my office LAN as closely as possible in working out all the
bugs.
My problem is, I can't get on the Internet!
I can run the diagnostics from the Sonicwall, ping, traceroute, etc.,
that all pass fine, but SBS box cannot connect.
Any idea why?

Can the SBS ping and tracert? Does the SBS have the Sonicwall as the
gateway? Did you use the wizards in the Sonicwall? Probably a
Sonicwall issue is my guess. What happens when you attach your laptop
to the Sonicwall, manually enter a good ip, the Sonicwal as the
gateway and 208.67.222.222 as a dns entry?

Just for clarification, where is the Sonicwall installed? At home or in =
the office? If you copied the settings to the spare firewall, and it has =
the office ISP settings, did you change them to the settings where you =
setup your lab? When you ran the diagnostics from the Sonicwall, I =
assume you are pinging an running a tracert to an external address? If =
so, then I assume it is actually connected to the internet.
While running the SBS wizard, did you install ISA?

Run ipconfig /all on the SBS 2008 server and see if the SBS 2008 server has
a default gateway or if it is blank.

Sorry for not getting back, I had a couple of other irons in the fire
to deal with.
Ok, sonicwall is in my home, along with temp dc & new 2008 SBS.
I copied the settings from office firewall & uploaded them to spare to
see that all necessary ports, etc., were open & yes, I did change WAN
settings to reflect those at my home!
Ipconfig shows sonicwall as default gateway & while I can ping &
traceroute from firewall using diagnostics, I can't from 2008 SBS. If
I ping, it pulls up the right address, but times out.
2003 SBS that is set up as my temp DC for the migration is set up same
way, on same network & can get out to the internet fine.
I have not installed ISA, as it hasn't been mentioned yet in the SBS
Migration documents.
When running the connect to the internet wizard from SBS console, the
test fails & tells me the router is not configured to connect to the
internet, but 2003 SBS connects just fine & it's going through that
same router (firewall).
When running the wizard & checking firewall logs, I also see messages
about malformed or unhandled IP packets dropped, coming from IP
address of 2008 SBS with a destination address of 224.0.0.1 or
224.0.0.22.

Does the Malformed message give you a port number? Post the message,
please.
Malformed IP with a Multicast address? Do you have TeamSpeak or
GoogleTalk installed somewhere?
http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-1035-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=244744
Did you setup RRAS (VPN) on the new server? How about QOS RSVP?

There is something installed on the SBS 2008 that is causing it, that
is if that is the source of the message. It could be an app, a service,
or malware, that is causing this. Searching around, it seems the name
SonicWall appears a lot with the results.

It turned out to be some one to one NAT settings on firewall - once I
deleted them, all went well.

Interesting. I would have never thought to look for or think of that. It =
must have been a rule to the 2003 SBS, correct?

Interesting. I wonder what the rule was for. Either way, I'm glad you =
figured it out!

One to one nat, mapping a public IP to a private one.
The private IP address was correct, but since I was not in the office,
public one wasn't.

Thanks for responding. I honestly can't see how that would have caused =
it. It would appear that it would be a remap rule that simply wouldn't =
work but not affect anything else, unless I am missing something?

In the one to one nat settings, I have public ip address mapped to the
private, 192.168.x.x, address of this server.
Since I am not at the office, my public ip address wouldn't be the
same as what is currently in the firewall settings - does that make
sense?

Yes, that part makes sense, but that would only affect whatever port
was mapped one to one to the server. For example, if I configured a one
to one NAT for port 25 to the server, then it simply wouldn't work if
configured with the wrong external interface to that server. I can't
see how that would affect the SBS not able to get outside. Unless of
course it is a global map?
